When angling greats such as Ernest Hemingway, Tommy Gifford and Alfred Glassel, Jr. were expanding the sport's horizons. Vintage Fin-Nor #3 Fly Fishing Reel Anti-Reverse LHW
I received this reel as a gift in 1982 and used it for several years as my large fish reel in fresh water only. Mostly in Alaska. The reel has not been used at all in the past 10 years and it is clean with a strong drag. It has some normal wear scratches but also has a small surface blemish on the inside of the spool(photo 3) which has no effect on the line or on the reel's operation. This rare reel comes in its scarce. Early, original black box with its original calfskin pouch along with its original Fin-Nor service tag. The reel is set up for right hand wind but I can convert it to left hand wind if the winner so desires. ~ A LITTLE FIN-NOR HISTORY ~ When Fin-Nor first started making the"Wedding Cake" fly reels they made the#1 and#2 with the same amount of tiers. The#1 reel was supposed to be a trout reel so they anodized them black and stamped the leather ... morepouch"Trout" Only 15 of the#1"Wedding Cake" reels were anodized black. They are the scarcest of all the"Wedding Cake" fly reels. Fin-Nor originally made the#3 and#4 reels with an extra tier. Fin-Nor built 28 of the#4 reels and about 99 of the extra tier#3 reels. Here is the story: Again. The#3 and the#4 reels had an extra tier but the design of the#4 reel was flawed. Both reels had the same diameter. Only the#4 reel was built wider with a wider spool to hold more line. Both reels also had the same thin spindle which was fine for the#3 reel but to thin for the#4 reel. The problem occurred when a large tarpon was running line off a#4 and the line played to the edge of the wider spool putting to much pressure on the thin spindle. The spindle would tweak just a little and the spool would then catch on the edge of the frame thus stopping the line from paying out. Breaking the line. Fin Nor Ahab Lite S-400 Fishing Spinning Reel 250 Yards of 8 LB
This is a Fin-Nor Ahab Lite S-400 spinning reel. It is used and in good working condition. It reels very smooth. The reel handle and reel handle knob rotate smoothly, the drag tightens and loosens fine, anti-reverse is good, but THE BAIL SPRING NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. The bail does not flip over all the way on its own. It goes halfway, and then you have to manually finish turning it over. Also, THE CLICKER SOUND DOESN'T SOUND when drag is coming off the reel. I don't know a whole lot about this reel. It does have a couple names on the little emblem on the left side plate it has Valiant Lady 111 Donald J.S. Merten. Does have some scratches and scuffs from normal use. The lever where the red tag is it needs to be checked out the spring is weak does not lock the handle everytime you change from one speed to the other The number on the reel is 12 153 the line was just put on the reel but I am not sure what pound test it is or how much it held.
