Thanks to the portage around the Mattawapika Dam and the fact that there is absolutely no road access to the lake, our waters remain unspoiled. With over 400 miles of shoreline, there’s never any trouble finding a spot that fits your bill, however the majority of our guests do their catching within a mile or two of their cottage..
Only 40 minutes from camp (30 of them walking) is Angler Lake (Catch & Release Only). Producing prize winning Bass in quantities not even imaginable to most, you’ll find yourselves reeling in upwards of a hundred (and that’s on a bad day). If that’s not enough excitement for you, take a walk into the Trout Lakes or Muskego Falls!

Those who prefer easy access and a shore lunch need to look no further then Wicksteed Lake- our most popular.
Wicksteed Lake - Pickerel (Walleye), Bass, Pike, Perch
A large, diverse heavily structured lake known for quality pickerel. Fish for pickerel and you’re likely to have a Pike grab your dinner! Expect to catch your limit and enjoy a shore lunch with the fish you catch fresh off the lake and prepared expertly by your guide on an open fire. Easy access provides more time to fish! Your limit will be cleaned by the guide.

Largo Lake - Walleye, Bass, Pike
A small and very remote lake and an adventure to get to. Travel by truck and then about an hour by Argo into the bush. Leaves you limited time on the water but offers a quality fishing experience.
Access: Very limited, very remote
Requirements: 4x4 Truck, Argo
Action: Live bait - minnows and worms. Casting - spinner baits, catch and release.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Chico Lake - Ontario Small Mouth Bass Fishing
A small remote lake with shallow water surrounded by rocks, underwater structure, coves and plentiful bass. Expect lots of action with sizes ranging from 1 lb to 6 lbs.

Action: Live bait - minnows and worms. Casting - spinner baits, catch and release.

Hangstone Lake - Walleye, Bass, Pike
A large, remote lake reached by truck or ATV and our second-most popular remote lake destination. Combine back-lake fishing with a guided ATV/UTV trip and you get twice the adventure!
Access: Moderately easy, slow going
Requirements: 4x4 Truck or ATV
Action: Live bait - minnows and worms.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Rates for Hangstone lake is based on shared UTV transportation plus one ATV for towing second boat if required. Additional ATV or UTV charged at daily rental rates.
Smith Lake - Bass, Pike
For the small-mouth bass enthusiast, Smith Lake is a unique experience and a sure bet for exciting bass fishing. Fish are plentiful and range from 2 - 6 pounds!
Access: Moderately easy, slow going

Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.

Bear Lake - Pike, Bass, Pickerel Fishing
A beautiful picturesque lake - some say the prettiest. Lots of Walleye and Northern Pike fishing-they can get big! Unlike Wicksteed, the use of artificial bait here requires different fishing techniques, but the rewards can be substantial.

Christie Lake – Small Mouth Bass
A small, remote and easily accessed lake chock full of “Smallies”!! A short trip by truck and you’re on the water in no time.

Northern Ontario black bear hunting at Marten River Lodge is planned for the last week of August and the first week of September. While the season runs from mid-August to October 31st, ... morewe have chosen these weeks because they are just before the opening of grouse season and therefore before all the added commotion in the bush. This naturally makes it much easier to attract Black Bears to the baits. Three weeks prior to the hunt the baiting begins and by the time the season opens the guides have a good indication of which stands show the most promise.
Our stands range from long rifle shots of over 150 yards to short shots of 20 yards for bow or shotgun hunters. Most of our stands are sturdy wooden platforms mounted permanently and firmly in trees although we have a few, particularly the long rifle shots, where the hunter is on the ground firing from behind a secluded log blind.
We run a very professional and limited hunt, accepting only 4 - 5 hunters per week. Your hunt begins long before you arrive. Our Guides and professional consultants meet early to plan the hunt program, identify selected stands/blinds and implement the baiting program. Stands/blinds are cleared of interfering brush and repaired, if necessary. Baiting is carried out daily by our Guides beginning 3 weeks before our first Hunters arrive. This insures a quality hunt and plenty of additional stands providing optimum conditions and the best chance at your bear. In the last five consecutive years we have enjoyed 100% opportunity rate with the largest bear taken weighing over 400 pounds.
There is a natural camaraderie amongst hunters and guides at Marten River Lodge. Even non-hunter guests join in the spirit of the hunt. With small groups, our guides are with you through the entire experience.
