It is completely original with no modifications or repairs. I think the rod tube is original but the rod sock is not. Both the rod sock and the rod tube are in excellent condition. I have had this from new. And after a season with it swore we would never be parted.but it is three long seasons since i have fished anything bigger than a two weight and feel guilty that it is gathering dust in a corner. If there was any justice it would be gathering value too! It is the original XP series that Sage seem to keep revisiting and using as the benchmark for customer satisfaction. deservedly so. Fast action but not a super fast and is quite progressive with a bit of line out. I have used it as a traveling rod, through the lake District, southern chalk streams and in New Zealand where it has subdued and landed fish of up to 6lb in some pretty strong waters as the butt to came into play. The Rod tube shows the scars of the miles it has traveled, not the rod. It's not a distance machine. It loads quickly and is great for accurate ... moreand delicate presentation from close to medium distance. I usually fish smallish dries and tiny nymphs which suit it fine and can be delicately presented with this action. However if you fish weighted tungsten depth charges for deep nymphing you wont find it too easy to control on this 4 wt, and streamers when wet feel more like casting drowned budgies. My fishing now is only on a tiny stream with a 0 wt and anything over 7' is frankly ridiculous on our water. I doubt if i will ever find another 9' all rounder as good as this( unless I come across a rare old Winston of a certain age and am loaded) so I am putting a reserve on for once. I know that I could spend £500+ on a new rod and still not get and action this good. So I wont be risking it going for £80. Please dont ask for a buy-it-now price unless your ready for an inflated valuation( like £750 for instance)

Slabbed by NGC as MS 62. There's a little bit of spotting/staining and the surfaces are a bit dull. I suppose that's what kept it out of a higher grade holder. Still quite an attractive piece. The composition is an interesting question. In hand. The color is orange. Definitely not red. Not yellow either, but enough not-red that I think it might be brass. NGC seems to agree, since they grade copper pieces with color designations(RD, RB, BN) and they leave those designations off brass pieces as they have done with this one. Sage One Fly Rod / 490-4 / Fished Once
Factory built rod. Got this as a gift. It is outstanding in every way but I like the slower action of my old Winston 4-weight IM6 and my Sage 490 LL better. This was fished for one day. Thoroughly wiped down, and put back in its tube. It's not dead mint but still looks new, other than a few nicks in the wood reel seat(see pics) Otherwise, enjoy this bad boy. Just the very slightest trace where the ferrules have been fitted together. I very much doubt whether the rod has ever been fished. Beautiful golden-brown blank. Uplocking nickel silver reel fitting with tropical wood insert, high quality half Wells cork handle. Complete with the original Sage combined rod bag/tube, 27 1/2" in length.
