Description Scarce Julius Vom Hofe Offshore Big Game Salt Water Trollling Reel. One of my favorite reels for salt water reel collection which is being liquidated. Was center to a number of older 6/0 size Vom Hofe Reels. Drag plate is stamped"PAT'D JAN.14.02" side plate is stamped"JULIUS VOM HOFE PAT. NOV.17.85 OCT.8.1889. On the reel foot there is a"O" stamped and below and to the right 2 slash marks stamped diagonally and to the right of that is stamped a cross(religous type) All 3 symbols are about 1/4" tall and wide or smaller combined. Runs very smooth(always has) and clicker is very strong. Measures 4 1/4" in diameter and 2 7/8" wide. I realize the pricing on this one might be a little rich. However, it was bought with many bidders on it and this is about where the price ended up many years ... moreago. Some may think that I paid to much and those opinions may have some validitity, however, to somebody like me who really wanted this reel it is not about the price but rather how difficult it is to find one of these in this condition and with this drag set up which is also in unusually fine condition. Small Julius Vom Hofe Raised Pillar Casting Reel
Julius Vom Hofe Raised Pillar Casting Reel Here is a JVH raised pillar non level wind casting reel. The plates measure 1 3/4" in diameter. The reel is about 2 1/8" to the end of the pillars. And the pillars are 1 5/16" wide. The only marking is the number 206 with an underlined 0 on the bottom of the foot(probably a catalog number) but the reel has the characteristic small hole in the middle of the foot and the JVH drag washer on the tail plate. Reel is quite worn with brassing and a couple of chips to the hard rubber plates but it does appear to be complete with original parts. Please enlarge the photos. Cranks smoothly. The click is weak. Vintage Fishing reel-Vom Hofe/Conroy 4/0 w/ Rabbeth Handle
Here is a very nice Julius Vom Hofe 4/0 reel with a Rabbeth Handle. This reel is marked Julius Vom Hofe. Nov. 17,85, Oct. 8 1889, Thos. J. Conroy. Overall this reel is in excellent condition but all of the plating is gone and Brass is now showing. The big plus for this reel and its real value lies in the handle. Most of these Rabbeth type handles have double knobs but this one is counter balanced. The all German Silver handle alone is worth at least $125-150. The reel spins like a top and the click is very strong. This reel has all of its Rosette washers and there are no chips or cracks in the side plates. I have not put a reserve on this reel nor have I listed a buy it now; although I thought about it. So good luck bidding. Vom Hofe. Julius, 2, nickel silver trout reel. This little raised pillar unmarked reel, made of hard rubber and nickel silver, measures 2 ½” x 1” and it has an on/off click button on the rear plate. Although the foot is full-length, it does have a wiggle or two in it. Much of the nickel plating has come off the spider washer and the grease cap. The spool turns as it should, with no broken gears, and no cracked or broken parts. I have seen nicer examples of this reel, but any example of this model are, in my estimation, Julius at his best. This little RHW gem would look great on a 7’0” rod.

Vintage( Unmarked Edward Vom Hofe ? ) Bamboo Trout Fishing Rod Pre1900
Up for Auction: An unmarked rod that was sold at an estate auction near Gettysburg PA with other vintage fishing equipment. This rod was sold as a unmarked Edward Vom Hofe 3 piece Trout Rod. Which I can not confirm for sure. I was able to research on the internet and found Edward Vom Hofe's Illsutrated Catalogue and compared it with a rod which does come very close to this rod. It was a no. 12, 3 piece Trout or Black Bass Fly Rod, which measured 9 to 11 feet. This rod assembled measures approx. 10feet 8 5/8 inches long. The first section measures 43 1/4 inches, the second section 43 5/8 iches and the last section 44 inches long. Each section has one eyelet or tie guide which also match up to the catalog. descriptions and the tip has a metal tube tip which also looks like a tip that is in the catalog. The Catalog also refers to a Calcutta ... moreBamboo Cane Black Bass Rod which is available but which is shorter. Rod mountings and Handles shown also look identical to ones on this rod. Rod's weight is 14.4 ounces. Again I cannot say for sure this is a Edward Vom Hofe but, I am told there are unmarked ones out there. For sale is a Julius Vom Hofe reel. It is stamped Pat. Nov 17 1985. Oct 8 1889. I tested the reel. The drag, free spool and the clicker all work well. All parts are original. The only problems are the cranking handle is loose(maybe the bearing needs repair, see photo#6) and there is a small crack on the top of the inside of the reel just above the spool(see photo#7} The reel is 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

This reel is in fair condition. Very good mechanically. The nickel plated brass head plate is worn through to brass over the signature. It is marked"JULIUS VOM HOFE/Line underscoring the name)PAT. NOV 17, 85/OCT. 8, 1889" The head plate is clad in hard rubber, which is in good condition. The straight counterbalanced handle has a large wooden knob. The hard rubber tail plate is problematic. It has an ancient repair, with two long plates holding a crack at the base. There is a strong on/off click button. In addition to all of this, the foot has been filed. This is being offered as a parts reel with potential for repair in the right hands with the right parts.

This is a 1920 something Edward Vom Hofe Catatlog(not sure of exact age) Its missing the front cover and begins on page 13 and ends on page 174. I am listing this for a collector or someone who enjoys vintage fishing items. I didnt want to just get rid of it. I thought the picture of the lures, reels and fishing gear were cool and could be helpful to someone who wanted to identify them. its still stapled. first page loose and last page missing lower bottom(and I acciedently just ripped it in half) ugh. but rest is ok. Vintage Rare Frederick Vom Hofe Brass Casting Reel w/Ball Handle, 2:1 Multiplier
Up for bid is one Vintage Brass Multiplier Casting Reel with Ball Handle. Threaded Bearing Cap, and 2:1 geared multiplier. I'm not sure how to classify this reel, based on the size of the foot I would guess it would have been used for salt water fishing or perhaps large fresh water species. There is no Clicker or Drag. The front cover is marked"F. V. HOFE, MAKER" This reel is constructed of brass. It is in good working condition. The handle is missing the wood knob, there is a plastic knob that is not original. The foot appears to be machined from one piece of brass and has signs of having been filed at both ends. On the bottom of the foot it is engraved with"150" This is a nice looking and nice working reel with exception of the missing knob. It has minimal scratches from use. The bearing cap is threaded. The bottom ... moreof the cover has a slash mark that extends onto the adjoining front plate which is a feature that is used to identify F. Vom Hofe reels as well. From what I've been able to find on the internet. Frederick Vom Hofe began making reels in 1857, and reels were marked F. VOM HOFE. He became partners with his son Julius in 1860 and began marking reels F. VOM HOFE& SON. He remained making reels until 1882 when he retired, thus this reel would have been made within that time span of 1857 to 1860 before his partnership with Julius. It measures 2-3/4" diameter. 4-3/8" deep including the handle, pillars are about 1-7/8" long, and has a foot measuring 3" long by 3/4" wide. The foot is marked on the bottom with"150" see photo) It weighs 13.6 ounces, with packaging it will ship below 2 pounds. I combine shipping and pass the savings on, so please view my other items. For Auction is a HUGE- EDWARD VOM HOFE 14/0 Commander Ross big game fishing reel- with very rare cradle reel seat. most likely from the 1930's. It is STAMPED 14/0, E88, and EDWARD VOM HOFE, NY. Around 1940 Vom Hoe moved to Philadelphia- correct me if im wrong) There was a 16/0 VH Commender Ross that sold for $10,200 on ebay recently. and unlike another Commander Ross that popped up recently- which was a scam- i actually own and have this one in my possetion and can verify any method you see fit-and its pictured here with some of my other tackle) and/or you can make an appointment to see it in Los Angeles/Calabasas Area. This huge reel measures 7 inches in diameter and 4 1/4 inches across the inside spool- and in one pic- its next to my 16/0 Kovalovsky, which is interesting as they are basically the same size. Very RARE and reminds me ... moreof a huge ROLEX WATCH, its so finely made. The 14/0 Commander Ross reel was only made for a few years to compete with reels like the Hardy Zane Grey as well as reels made by Kovalovsky, J.A. Coxe and Fin-Nor to name a few. The Commander Ross reels were used by anglers such as Michael Lerner and S. Kip Farrington. Ernest Hemingway also used Vom Hofe Commander Ross reels on occasion. All parts are Original, and it's in near mint condition for it's age, has a little lightening under the black rubber side plates and trivial wear as pictured(never tried to clean off) but is in amazing condition works perfectly- could be fished today to catch a 1000 pound marlin(if u are crazy) highly sought after and collectable. The bag has a few holes in the bottom, but they have been safety pinned closed. Inscribed on the metal part of the rod is Patent Feb. 15, 1927. Vom Hofe was a machinist, fishing-tackle builder and noted big-game angler who outfitted the famous anglers of his generation. Up for auction are two Edward Vom Hofe Fishing Reels one is a 423 2-0 Restigouche and the other is a 800 2 Matecombe. Both reels and cases have been used and there are scrathes and some other problems see pictures for condition. One of the side plates on the 800 2 is really scratched up. I posted on a message board a while back to get information on these because I know nothing about fishing reels. I was told the 800 2 inscribed GDBB may have belonged to George Bonbright. George Bonbright was a wealthy New York investment banker& ardent Salmon fishermen who fished the Grand Cascapedia in the 20's& 30's but later turned his attention to the Bonefish& Tarpon of the Florida Keys. Classic Julius Vom Hofe Ball Handled Reel with Rare Logo NR
You are bidding on a classic example of a Julius Vom Hofe ball handled reel that measures 3 1/8" in diameter by 2 3/4" in width. The reel has a full foot that is marked: 1/0. What sets this reel apart from many of Julius Vom Hofe's other reels is that is it is marked on the front plate: Julius Vom Hofe. With a fancy scrolled NY, and a clover leaf in the center. The reel has been professionally cleaned by a jeweler and shows all of its early brass luster. The reel is in excellent mechanical condition, cranks very smoothly, with a good strong star rim drag lever. Cosmetically, I would rate the reel an 8 1/2, as it does show some minor dents to the foot, but otherwise, shows normal wear for its age. This is a no reserve auction. Antique Julius vom Hofe Casting Reel Circa 1890
This fine example of 19th century American craftsmanship clearly shows that it was produced by the Julius vom Hofe Company(established 1857) for the famous Von Lengerke& Detmold sporting goods company in Brooklyn. NY just before the turn of the 20th century. Von Lengerke and Detmold was later acquired by the original Abercrombie& Fitch sporting goods company of Manhattan, NY in 1929, just before the start of the Great Depression. Julius vom Hofe was granted a total of nine patents for his fishing reel innovations. His brother. Edward vom Hofe, is also a reel maker of some notoriety, with many patents to his name. This size three reel. Made of German nickel-plated brass with hard rubber end plates, is in excellent working and physical condition with few indications of use or wear. Patent dates. Clearly inscribed on the side plate, ... moreinclude Nov 17, 1885, for the reel end plates made of hard rubber with metal protective bands and Oct 8, 1889, for a rear spool bearing steel pivot and washer. Vintage F. Vom Hofe & Son? Ni Pl'd Brass Cast Reel w/Ball Handle, 2:1 Multiplier
Up for bid is one Vintage Nickel Plated Brass Multiplier Casting Reel with Ball Handle. Rotating Clicker Knob, Drag Control, Threaded Bearing Cap, and 2:1 geared multiplier. I'm not sure how to classify this reel, based on the size of the foot I would guess it would have been used for salt water fishing or perhaps large fresh water species. There is a unique clicker that is engaged through rotating a knob counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, and a drag pull-out knob on the front cover rim. The front cover is not marked. This reel is constructed of nickel plated brass in fair condition. It is in fair working condition, the drag has little if any effect, and the cover does not seat properly all the way round. There is a gap in the area of the handle of about 1/64" If the screw is tightened to close the gap the reel starts to bind-up. The ... morehandle is has a hard rubber knob. The foot is machined from one piece of brass. It appears free of scratches and any signs of abuse. The bearing cap is threaded. On the bottom of the foot there is"3" stamped. Inside the cover there is an"39" scratched on the plate. On the bottom of the front cover there is an'index' mark stamped from the front plate onto the cover. There are two features that some would use to identify this reel as a"F. VOM HOFE" Or"F. VOM HOFE& SON" reel. One is the threaded bearing cap. And the second being the index mark. Based on these features both being present and the recent listings I posted of marked reels from both F. Vom Hofe and early Julius Vom Hofe(had the clover leaf logo) both of which had identical features as this unmarked reel, I feel there is a high probability that this reel is either an item produced by F. Vom Hofe& Son, or slightly later by Julius Vom Hofe. There is no way that I'm aware of to confirm either and there is always a possibility that it was another manufacturer. These two old. Split bamboo, boat rods/poles, with rattan wrapped handles and agate eyelets. Were made by Edward Vom Hofe. The top two piece rod measures 75 inches long and is marked"EDWARD VOM HOFE MAKER FULTON STREET. NY" The rattan handle, split bamboo, eyelets, and wrappings all appear to be in good condition for their age, except the bamboo tip section has a downward curve and I can't get the male and female ferrules apart. It also appears that someone polished or buffed the metal pieces at some point. The bottom one piece rod measures 79 inches long and is marked" EDW VOM HOFE MAKERS NY" The rattan handle and eyelets appear to be in good condition for their age.
