He learned to wrap rods from the local fly shop owner and rod builder, so he knows all of the tricks of the trade and has improved on some. He specializes in larger, saltwater rods, so they are built better than any factory rod and uses top end components. Most of the rods have at least two, if not three stripper guides. He seals the cork grips to protect from body oils, dirt and fish slime, which is why most of the cork is slightly off color. This XP looks barely used and is absolutely gorgeous. Sage XP 5 wt Travel Rod
This is a Sage XP 590-4(5 wt. 9' 4 piece) travel rod with a blue cordura rod/reel case. If you know or have heard of XP's you know how well they cast, if you like tight loops. This is a custom made rod, but of course with a Sage blank and according to Sage specifications so it looks just like a production rod, but with an beautiful upgraded reel seat. The cork is pristine. The rod and reel seat show virtually no wear because I had a reel on it I believe no more than 5-6 times. This is a like new top of line Sage XP fast action 8 weight 4 piece travel rod in the 9 foot 6 inch length that I bought for a trip to Chistmas Island two years ago. Titanium guides and an anodized real seat make this a great salt water rod. I have this same rod in a two piece and haven't used this rod since my trip. Perfect for steelhead. I have had this from new. And after a season with it swore we would never be parted.but it is three long seasons since i have fished anything bigger than a two weight and feel guilty that it is gathering dust in a corner. If there was any justice it would be gathering value too! It is the original XP series that Sage seem to keep revisiting and using as the benchmark for customer satisfaction. deservedly so. Fast action but not a super fast and is quite progressive with a bit of line out. I have used it as a traveling rod, through the lake District, southern chalk streams and in New Zealand where it has subdued and landed fish of up to 6lb in some pretty strong waters as the butt to came into play. The Rod tube shows the scars of the miles it has traveled, not the rod. It's not a distance machine. It loads quickly and is great for accurate ... moreand delicate presentation from close to medium distance. I usually fish smallish dries and tiny nymphs which suit it fine and can be delicately presented with this action. However if you fish weighted tungsten depth charges for deep nymphing you wont find it too easy to control on this 4 wt, and streamers when wet feel more like casting drowned budgies. My fishing now is only on a tiny stream with a 0 wt and anything over 7' is frankly ridiculous on our water. I doubt if i will ever find another 9' all rounder as good as this( unless I come across a rare old Winston of a certain age and am loaded) so I am putting a reserve on for once. I know that I could spend £500+ on a new rod and still not get and action this good. So I wont be risking it going for £80. Please dont ask for a buy-it-now price unless your ready for an inflated valuation( like £750 for instance)

SAGE XP 890-4 Fly Rod 9' 8 Wt Custom *BEAUTIFUL*
I am selling a bunch of custom rods from a guy that does about 20-30 per year. He does it for his therapy and then purges a bunch at a time. He does fish some of them. But there are so many, that no one man can put that many hours on that many rods. He learned to wrap rods from the local fly shop owner and rod builder, so he knows all of the tricks of the trade and has improved on some. He specializes in larger, saltwater rods, so they are built better than any factory rod and uses top end components. Most of the rods have at least two, if not three stripper guides. He seals the cork grips to protect from body oils, dirt and fish slime, which is why most of the cork is slightly off color. He also reimburses the ferrules on most of the rods with thread wraps the length of the ferrule. This XP looks barely used and is absolutely gorgeous. During that period, I bought 3 of the 10 foot XP rods. My first was the 6100-4 that I still use for Great Lakes steelhead. The second was the 8100-4 XP that I use on salmon. Finally, I bought the 4100-4 XP. I used this rod as a"shop demo" so customers could understand that these were much more than light-weight 10 foot rods for nymphing. The first guy that ever borrowed it bought 2; one for himself and one for his dad. He was amazed at how accurately he could present a dry fly and it became his rod of choice. Several years ago I came across this 5 weight and I thought that I had to have it. I bought it from a flyshop in the northeast.
