Yellowing from age and musty smell about it- it's just plain old. The reel is in very good condition and spins freely without issue- there is some very minor scratches here and there but all in all very good condition. About the only issue with the reel is the pull pin opposite to the handle looks to be slightly bent but does not disturb the turning of the handle- other than this the reel is in extremely nice condition. Reel is stamped"Made in France" and has a# on the underside of the rod mounting slide- is hard to read but appears to be 38998 U.S. bidders. Has this on the side of the box. A 450117. CONDITION; This item was purchased in 1968. The reel has never been used and is in brand new condition. It has been stored down in the basement all these years. The paper cover is warped from basement moisture and it has a slight smell. Probably if it was left in the sun for a few days it would go away. There is no mold on it. Just that weird smell. The paper has a rip on one side that was taped together and on the other side a piece is missing. The plastic container has some scuffs all over it just from being moved around from place to place. The inside of the container has a red bleed spot on the yellow near the right lower side of the space that looks like a watermelon slice(where the handle rests) I was going to wash the container but thought maybe I should just leave it alone and let the new owner clean it if they wish. When you open the container the hinge on the back makes a loud noise but it is not broken. I think it is just off center or tight. This vintage Garcia Mitchell 306 spinning reel in rough shape but still works. It seems mechanicaly in good working order. Physically it has corrision. Rust, missing paint and the bail is missing(there are a couple pieces for bail attached to reel photos show them) It retrieves fine but seems a little tight. It has original instruction book. Has a quick release spool for line. I tried to undo the handle to spin it but couldn't move the lock nut. Cosmetically, the reel is in excellent condition with only one small 1/4" rub on the bottom of the case just under the handle. There is also a very small spot on the bottom of the foot. Besides these rubs, this reel is in beautiful condition and presents very well with it's bright vivid graphics and rich black painted finish. For sale is a Garcia Mitchell 402 salt water that I have complety rebuilt. I have replaced the cam and pinion gears with new/used ones I installed a new bearing and bail assembly along with a new bail spring. All parts were striped and repainted. This reel works like a new one. All of the drag componets are in this reel a work as they should. The drag is very strong as is the bail lever. Please ask any questions you may have. Mitchell 304 CAP Dating from the 1950's, the serial number 221421 is stamped on the housing. Used but still in very good working order. Just add line if you want to fish with it. The crosswind gearing turns very freely and smoothly with a nice gentle purr from the gears. The bail return is strong as these always are and it has a nicely ticking optional anti reverse. Visually most of the black finish remains but there is some damage on the foot and stem. Also a little rubbing on the lower edge of the housing. See pictures for details. up for bids is a very rare mitchell half bail spinning reel. this reel has been professionally restored. Paint stripped,chrome pieces replated and repainted with high tech catalyst paint. this reel was in good shape, worked fine but almost all the paint was worn off so i decided to redo it. i reassembled it with new screws and high tech lube.notice the marks on the spools that look like roman numerals,the spool on the left is a shallow spool and the one on the right is a deep spool. if you had the correct drag knob on the spool you could tell what spool you had on even if it was full of line. just a little info for the folks not famillar with these old mitchells. could not find any numbers on this reel so that would put it made prior to 1949. i get all my info on these old mitchell reels from the mitchell reel museum and the book by wallace ... morecarney. never proved them wrong.as far as i know every piece on this reel is original except for the new screws. not 100% the box is original but it looks just the one in the manual for this reel. Check pics.do your research before you bid and i will answer any questions you have regarding this reel. when you enlarge pics you may see a spec or two of dust but i don,t believe you will find a blemish on this reel. if you don.T think this reel looks better than new and works as well i will even pay for return shipping. thanks for looking
