Wonderfully-formed, Pike or Muskie Spearing Decoy was hand carved and painted by Michigan's Renowned decoy carver Gerald D. Finch(1931-2001) of Ashton, Michigan, a town located in the central area of Michigan's lower peninsula about 75 miles south of Traverse City. Mr. Finch is one of Michigan's lesser known fish decoy carvers but he has hand-crafted thousands of incredible spearing decoys ranging from fish to ducks to muskrats and frogs. His effective spearing decoys are all wonderfully carved, brightly colored and heavily weighted. Not only are they known for their aesthetic qualities, but also for their ability to bring big pike into your spearing hole for their last meal. Like many carvers, his shop was full of paints, brushes, cut fins and decoy bodies in various stages of completion. The cedar bodied decoy measures 7-1/4" long x 8" wide x 2-3/8" tall and weighs 8-ozs. which includes the perfectly poured in and more than adequately weighted lead ballast weights in the bottom. The decoy has all aluminum metal fins which are perfectly cut into the shape of the duck's wings and the rear rudder. They can all be bent to your liking to swim in whatever pattern the spearer prefers from tight diving circles to long sweeping ascending swimming arcs. The wood carving is astoundingly realistic for a drake goldeneye including the plump, round body, short, thick neck and puffy head with a stubby bill. Gordon Swenatron is an obscure fish decoy carver whose decoys are excellent. Original works of art with outstanding folk art qualities and decorator appeal. They are hand made and hand painted and exhibit wonderful personality and visual appeal. This outstanding and larger sized Swenarton Muskie measures a very nice 9 3/4" long. It has carved gill markings and red glass eyes. The decoy is painted in really folky and muted shades of green and yellow with accents in white and pink. The open mouth is filled with dozens of individually carved wooden teeth which gives this decoy outstanding personality and visual appeal. It is beautifully made and looks fantastic on display. Mike Ott is a very obscure fish decoy carver from Northern Minnesota. His work is included in the collector's reference book FISH DECOY MAKERS PAST AND PRESENT and are seldom seen on ebay. This decoy is part of a nice little collection that just came in. It represents a trout and is painted in a very unusual folk art style. This is an early example of Mike's work before he went toward the ultra realistic style and has to be very unusual. It measures 6 1/2" long and has carve gill and mouth features. It is completely hand made and hand painted in the old schiool tradition. The condition is original and lightly fished with light wear and signs of age. The maker has signed the decoy by carving MO into the belly. It also has 2" carved next to the MO but I am not sure what this may mean. Here is a fine Vintage representation of a Great Lakes-style ice fishing lure/decoy handcarved and handpainted wooden Catfish. By Carl Christiansen, one of the Premier master carvers of all time. He is from Newberry, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. It was purchased by my wife who lived in Newberry, Pine Stump Junction, and Sault Ste. Marie in the 80's. She loved the quality of his work, thought it was a beautiful example of a catfish from that area, but also a piece of artwork/folk art from the Upper Peninsula! The carving and painting are excellent. Please take note of the pictures for the true quality. The whisker-like barbels. 4 below mouth, 2 above eyes, and 2 long ones at side of head, are made of some kind of rubber. The metal/painted.Dorsal and side fins are in good shape. The eyes are made of glass. There is an intact metal'line ... moretie attachment' with 3 holes. There is a recessed. Lead weight on the bottom with Carl's typical impressed initials- CC" beside it in Black. Lure measures approx. 6 1/2" from upper mouth to tail tip. This was never used and sat on a shelf or in a cabinet forever. However. It fell off a cabinet once, and the tail had to be repaired- part of the bottom tip glued back on, 2 outer tail tips broken off- and were lost.sorry. But this great Catfish looks VERY GOOD sitting up on a shelf now and could be added to your present collection OR start a new one by this extraordinary carver! We were eating in a Famous fish restaurant on the beach at Clearwater.Florida and I saw one of their cup's and decided I would create a fish decoy, that I could sell to that restaurant. I no sooner created a design that was some what like their picture on the cup and they closed all their restaurants in Florida. I had fun doing this Decoy and finished this on in 2008. I am selling the cup with this decoy, it is 5" long x 2-3/4" high x 3/4" thick-made of my favorite wood-old knotty cedar-from Torch Lake Mich. Did the fins out of old coat hangars and pored lead in the decoy for sinkability. Sign Jim Scheibner and stamped JCAS-08. Shell's. Never been used, but could be used for ice fishing. Cup is included with decoy. It cost $10.00.
