Wonderfully-formed, Pike or Muskie Spearing Decoy was hand carved and painted by Michigan's Renowned decoy carver Gerald D. Finch(1931-2001) of Ashton, Michigan, a town located in the central area of Michigan's lower peninsula about 75 miles south of Traverse City. Mr. Finch is one of Michigan's lesser known fish decoy carvers but he has hand-crafted thousands of incredible spearing decoys ranging from fish to ducks to muskrats and frogs. His effective spearing decoys are all wonderfully carved, brightly colored and heavily weighted. Not only are they known for their aesthetic qualities, but also for their ability to bring big pike into your spearing hole for their last meal. Like many carvers, his shop was full of paints, brushes, cut fins and decoy bodies in various stages of completion. The cedar bodied decoy measures 7-1/4" long x 8" wide x 2-3/8" tall and weighs 8-ozs. which includes the perfectly poured in and more than adequately weighted lead ballast weights in the bottom. The decoy has all aluminum metal fins which are perfectly cut into the shape of the duck's wings and the rear rudder. They can all be bent to your liking to swim in whatever pattern the spearer prefers from tight diving circles to long sweeping ascending swimming arcs. Up for auction is another item from my late Brother-in-law's* collection. 18) Hand Carved Ice Fishing/Spearing Decoy Mouse"cheater style" Maker: GRAY EAGLE(painted on bottom) Size: Approx. 6 inches long. Details: Hand carved ice fishing/spearing decoy. This is a mouse with a rather large hook attached to the belly. I heard you'd call it a"cheater" decoy. The body has been painted. It has metal ears, bead eyes, heavy wire whiskers, and leather front legs and tail. The rear legs are wood and set into the rear end. There is a propeller- type spinner in the front. I'm saying it's used, but I really don't know for sure. There is no corrosion on the metal parts, so it may just be old and unused. He was a collector of all sorts of fishing tackle. Bass and/or Salmon plugs, ice fishing decoys, etc. Also a long ... moretime member of the National Fishing Lure Collector's Club. You name it- if it had anything to do with fishing, he collected it. The first fish decoy is white with red gill paint and drake green head.Nicely painted and carved with painted eyes. Metal fins and it is about 6 1/2" long. It has some age and rust on the fins and a crack on one side of the lure. See pictures. The second fish decoy or lure is light on the bottom and darker on the back with tack eyes. 6 Vintage or Antique Spear Spearing Ice Frog Fishing Decoy U.S. Line Company MA
Here is something unusual. Five old frog or fish spearing heads. One in particular is of interest here. It has the label mark for U.S Line Company Westfield. Mass with an eagle logo, and U.S.L. Brand. I believe this is very rare, I could not find any others like it in past or current listings on this site, I did find some catalogs from this company from the early 1950's. The item is like new, five tines, and measures about 3" x 7' x 1" There is also another one that looks like it is made from brass, or copper, it measures 4" x 9 1/4' x 1 1/8" It is marked, made in ND. Then there is one that is green, heavy steel, with an open tang, it measures 5" x 10 1/4' x 1 1/8" no markings which I can see. Number four is the bigger blue spear head 4 1/4" x 9 1/2" x 1 1/4" no markings. The last ... moreone is the smaller blue spear head 4 1/2" x 8' x 1" it has the initials PL engraved on to it.
