Marten River Lodge is a premier fishing, hunting, family vacation and corporate retreat destination and has been providing guests with The Ultimate Outdoor Adventure for over 80 years. Marten River Lodge sits on the boarder of zones 40 and 41 and as the lodge is not eligible for the moose hunting tags handed out by the Ministry of Natural Resources hunters must apply ... moreon their own and may apply for either district. Usually the larger groups are successful in their applications; however individuals have had some luck.
The lodge is surrounded by Crown land with miles of old logging roads and acres of marshes to hunt in. Our moose population is on the increase and it’s not unusual to see moose while you’re fishing.
We have cottage rentals available and we can accommodate your group with ATV rentals and retrieval of the Moose. Our cabins are completely equipped with linens, towels, microwaves, stove, refrigerator, washrooms, and propane heat. Every convenience for a comfortable hunt.

Northern Ontario black bear hunting at Marten River Lodge is planned for the last week of August and the first week of September. While the season runs from mid-August to October 31st, ... morewe have chosen these weeks because they are just before the opening of grouse season and therefore before all the added commotion in the bush. This naturally makes it much easier to attract Black Bears to the baits. Three weeks prior to the hunt the baiting begins and by the time the season opens the guides have a good indication of which stands show the most promise.
Our stands range from long rifle shots of over 150 yards to short shots of 20 yards for bow or shotgun hunters. Most of our stands are sturdy wooden platforms mounted permanently and firmly in trees although we have a few, particularly the long rifle shots, where the hunter is on the ground firing from behind a secluded log blind.
We run a very professional and limited hunt, accepting only 4 - 5 hunters per week. Your hunt begins long before you arrive. Our Guides and professional consultants meet early to plan the hunt program, identify selected stands/blinds and implement the baiting program. Stands/blinds are cleared of interfering brush and repaired, if necessary. Baiting is carried out daily by our Guides beginning 3 weeks before our first Hunters arrive. This insures a quality hunt and plenty of additional stands providing optimum conditions and the best chance at your bear. In the last five consecutive years we have enjoyed 100% opportunity rate with the largest bear taken weighing over 400 pounds.
There is a natural camaraderie amongst hunters and guides at Marten River Lodge. Even non-hunter guests join in the spirit of the hunt. With small groups, our guides are with you through the entire experience.

We have several options for back lake fishing. Some of which depend on how adventurous you feel as some lakes can be difficult to get to. Others will depend on weather, group size, ... moreand accessibility given the time of year. All our excursions are unique and provide a true Northern adventure. Those who prefer easy access and a shore lunch need to look no further then Wicksteed Lake- our most popular.
Wicksteed Lake - Pickerel (Walleye), Bass, Pike, Perch
A large, diverse heavily structured lake known for quality pickerel. Fish for pickerel and you’re likely to have a Pike grab your dinner! Expect to catch your limit and enjoy a shore lunch with the fish you catch fresh off the lake and prepared expertly by your guide on an open fire. Easy access provides more time to fish! Your limit will be cleaned by the guide.

Largo Lake - Walleye, Bass, Pike
A small and very remote lake and an adventure to get to. Travel by truck and then about an hour by Argo into the bush. Leaves you limited time on the water but offers a quality fishing experience.
Access: Very limited, very remote
Requirements: 4x4 Truck, Argo
Action: Live bait - minnows and worms. Casting - spinner baits, catch and release.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Chico Lake - Ontario Small Mouth Bass Fishing
A small remote lake with shallow water surrounded by rocks, underwater structure, coves and plentiful bass. Expect lots of action with sizes ranging from 1 lb to 6 lbs.
Access: Very limited, very remote
Requirements: 4x4 Truck, Argo
Action: Live bait - minnows and worms. Casting - spinner baits, catch and release.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Hangstone Lake - Walleye, Bass, Pike
A large, remote lake reached by truck or ATV and our second-most popular remote lake destination. Combine back-lake fishing with a guided ATV/UTV trip and you get twice the adventure!
Access: Moderately easy, slow going
Requirements: 4x4 Truck or ATV
Action: Live bait - minnows and worms.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Rates for Hangstone lake is based on shared UTV transportation plus one ATV for towing second boat if required. Additional ATV or UTV charged at daily rental rates.
Smith Lake - Bass, Pike
For the small-mouth bass enthusiast, Smith Lake is a unique experience and a sure bet for exciting bass fishing. Fish are plentiful and range from 2 - 6 pounds!
Access: Moderately easy, slow going

Action: Live bait - minnows and worms.
Lunch: Packed cooler - sandwiches, drinks, dessert.
Rates for Smith Lake is based on shared UTV transportation. Additional ATV or UTV charged at daily rental rates.
Bear Lake - Pike, Bass, Pickerel Fishing
A beautiful picturesque lake - some say the prettiest. Lots of Walleye and Northern Pike fishing-they can get big! Unlike Wicksteed, the use of artificial bait here requires different fishing techniques, but the rewards can be substantial.

Christie Lake – Small Mouth Bass
A small, remote and easily accessed lake chock full of “Smallies”!! A short trip by truck and you’re on the water in no time.

Exclusively for our Marten River Lodge guests, our Argo Avenger is a true 8 wheel amphibious all terrain vehicle that can comfortably carry 3 guests along with the guide. It differs ... morefrom the ATV tour in that families with children can enjoy the experience of our wilderness as a passenger. The guide will take you and your family or friends on an excursion of you’re choosing. It can be as mild as a dirt road country drive or as adventuresome as crossing deep beaver ponds inaccessible by any other Ontario ATV rentals.
The Argo adventure does not cover the ground an ATV can as it’s much slower, however the ground that is does cover is unsurpassed by any other ATV. It’s truly an experience that creates memories-one that your group will talk about for years to come. As mentioned above you can also take advantage of a Northern Ontario back lake fishing trip and enjoy the Argo en-route to your remote lake. Half the fun is getting there!

Argo adventure packages are limited. Please book early. Argo adventures can carry the guide and three adults comfortably. Argo’s while slower are more like tanks. They go anywhere, but the ride can be bumpy. Your safety is our number one concern. If you have a bad back or are sensitive to bumpy rides you may want to consider another adventure package.

- At Marten River Lodge, our guided UTV/ARGO trips are designed to have fun while preserving our forests. Our guides will keep you on trails designed for ATV/UTV use, and you’ll never run out of areas to explore. Waivers to be signed before departure
- Helmets are provided and must be worn at all times during operation of ATVs/UTVs/ARGOs. For self-guided ATV riders, we strongly recommend you bring and use your own GPS device
- All prices are subject to applicable taxes
Guided UTV / ARGO Tours We are one of very few Northern Ontario lodges that have guided UTV and ARGO tours available exclusively to our guests. We use late model Polaris machines that ... moreare fully automatic with 4-wheel or 8-wheel drive and can carry from 1 to 5 passengers. UTVs are comfortable and easy to ride in. The ARGO is a little rougher but if you’re up for the challenge, it can go where no other machine can go – and, it’s amphibious!
Marten River Lodge has access to hundreds of miles of old logging roads, bush trails and hydro lines right from our driveway. Our guides will take you deep into seldom seen bogs, old growth forests and secluded lakes for an adventure that only few get to experience. You’re likely to come across animal tracks along the trails and there’s always a good chance you may see some wildlife!
Some adventures may even require a winch to pull you through the trail. (Don’t worry; your Guide will do the work). Your job is to explore, learn and enjoy the experience that a UTV or ARGO adventure can provide.
