Beautiful pair of antique kerosene boat lanterns c.1850-1870 for sale
This is a pair of antique kerosene-burning boat lanterns that were used on sailing ships and barges worldwide in the period 1850-1870. These specific items were manufactured by R.E. Dietz Co. 221 Wilkinson Street, Syracuse, New York. One glass lens is green, the other is red to mark the starboard and port sides of the vessel at night so that it was visible to other boats. The lanterns are made of black sheet metal, the lenses are solid glass, and they are 11" tall. The original kerosene burners and wicks are intact. There is a receptacle on the back of each lantern for hanging them on the ship or barge. These lanterns are in excellent condition for relics of this age. It is believed that these specific items were used on barges in the Erie Canal in New York state- but that may be only family lore. This auction includes a bill of sale for the boat Northumberland. The sale was between two Salem merchants- David Pingree and Edward D. Kimball. The sale price was Eleven twentieths? The Northumberland was a 176 ton brig made in Baltimore. Maryland. it sunk in 1850. Great condition. Please ask questions. Capt. Joseph W. Luscomb was born at Salem. Essex County, Massachusetts, on 24 August 1811. He was the son of Henry Luscomb and Mary Burrett. Joseph W. Luscomb married at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 3 November 1833, at age 22, Lucy Ann Daniels, daughter of John Daniels and Lucy Sparhawk. They had the following children: Lucy A Luscomb. 14, Massachusetts Jos W. Luscomb. 12, Massachusetts Amanda Luscomb. 10, Massachusetts Theresia Luscomb. 7, S. Northumberland. Brig, 176 tons, Baltimore, Md. 1839. Reg. Sept. 8, 1841. Thos. P. Pingree, owner; George S. Richards, master. Reg. Oct. 6, 1843. David Pingree, owner; J. Shirley, master. Reg. Dec. 25,1846. Edward D Kimball, owner; C. Ingalls, master. Lost in 1850. David Pingree(1795-1863) Merchant, ship owner, president of the Naumkeag Bank, and Mayor of Salem in 1851, was the first president of the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company. He was succeeded by Edward D. Kimball(1811-1867) also a Salem merchant and ship owner. Both of these men were also active in the African trade, their ships going to West Africa or Zanzibar. It seems to be somewhat more than coincidental that one of the products most in demand in Africa was American cotton cloth, which was traded for hides, ivory, and particularly gum copal, a resin used in varnish. 13 Loth Silver Gravy Boat 11.2oz Mid-1800's Germany .813 Under Melt Price SALE!
Antique silver piece which dates between 1826-1872 made by Adolf Schellenberg. I have been told by experts that this particular piece is more likely to be from the later end of that. 1860-1870, due to it being highly decorated. Measures a little over 7" at its longest point and 4 3/4" tall at the highest point. Weighs approximately 11.2oz(approximate since done on a spring scale) The marking on the underside"13" indicates 13/16 parts silver and is a old German method of marking silver. The gravy boat detaches from the bottom plate. There is a zigzag assay mark on both pieces that cannot be seen unless detached from one another. This is where it was originally tested for silver purity. Four bolts connect the two pieces, and only one original nut remains. It is a difficult fit, more so on one side than the other(seen in ... morelast photos) There is also some scratching as seen in the photos where the nuts are. Overall the silver is clean and shiny, but there are also a few small black marks which I am unable to clean the piece. No more than three or four mostly on the underplate and they are very small. I attempted to get this in the pictures as well. It is a very classy antique piece of silver. Hoping to pass it on to a place where it can be appreciated! Hard to find loth silver priced near spot.
