1940s US Coast and Geodetic Survey Map of Martha's Vineyard to Block Island
This beautiful and historic map of Martha's Vineyard to Block Island was produced in Washington DC in the early 1940s by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey(USC&GS) The USC&GS was a federal agency that defined and managed the national coordinate system to provide the foundation for transportation and communication. Using a fleet of survey ships as well as a large number of applications of science and engineering. The agency created maps and charts. This map shows Martha's Vineyard to Block Island with soundings measured in feet at mean low water. It is stamp dated August 1944. And labeled as No. 1210. I have eight maps in all which represent much of the East Coast of the US in the 1940s. These maps have been folded and kept dust free for decades by one of my family members. A rare life-size shorebird decoy. Hand-carved and hand-painted by Herb Hancock(1929-2001) from Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Herb was a lobsterman, Town Selectman, bird carver, and a builder of more than 300 homes on the Vineyard. The bird, with glass eyes, is in very good original condition and was probably carved in the 1960s-70s. It is not generally known, that, in ancient times, the Vineyard, with Nantucket and the neighbouring islets, constituted a separate colony, wholly independent of any other jurisdiction in America. This territory was granted by William, Earl of Stirling, to Thomas Mayhew, formerly a merchant in the province of Massachusetts Bay…The descendants of the Nortons, who were among these early settlers, are now very numerous in the Vineyard. The rest of Governour Mayhew’s territory was inhabited by the red men, whose sachems seem to be independent chiefs, yet owed a species of feudal homage to the great Sachem ... moreo the Wampanoags, who ruled on the main land…in regard to its present condition, a month’s residence enables us to give a few has sketches, which perhaps may entertain the reader; as Martha’s Vineyard lies somewhat out of the beaten track of tourists and description-mongers.
