Up for auction is a LL Bean Double L fiberglass fly rod. It is a 8' 1/2" 8wt in a 2 PC construction. The rod is in very good functional shape. The only blemishes are oxidation on some of the guides and the rod tip spiral wrap is missing a little. However the rod tip wrap is perfectly functional and the rod is ready to fish. The rod tube is not original but is a nice fenwick aluminum tube. I believe this rod to be Phillipson made. Vintage Heddon Pal Mark IV 8457 Fly Rod - 8'6" 8wt 2pc w/Sock & Tube - Mint
I just inventoried my fiberglass rod collection and discovered I still have 3 8457s. It is one of my favorite fiberglass rods from the 1960's. And is one of my favorites. I have owned this Mark IV Fly Rod#8457 8'6" 8wt Controlled Flex Actionrod with the later and preferred"yellow" blank for over 3 years, and it has been displayed in my heated office/fishing gear workshop on the wall the whole time. The rod is all original, the aluminum reel seat is in great condition and indicates this is a mid 1960's model. The walnut and faux ivory inlay and cork grip are also in excellent condition. All guides, hook keeper,and ferrules are intact, and perfect as are the windings from tip to bottom of rod. The ferrels are unscratched or scuffed and join together and come apart nicely, and the rubber o-ring is like new. This is ... moreclearly a vintage rod that has been carefully if at all fished and cared for. A nice period correct green with red stitching rod sock is included. It also has the period correct Heddon green cardboard tube that is slightly worn and done it's duty protecting this rod over the past 50+ years. I bought in Wisconsin when I was a kid the rod is definitely mint. Honestly, I am only selling this because I found an 8wt version which is the exact rod I owned as a teenager in the 1960's and learned to cast on in Wisconsin. I'd rather have someone else enjoy this one, as I have over the years. Here is some nice detailed information on the Heddon flyrods from the 1960's. Some of which was borrowed from a similar listing 8wt listed that sold for over $100 earlier in the year. In the early 1960's this rod was listed at $40.00 in the Heddon catalogs of that era. Factory Vintage Winston 9ft 2pc 8wt Graphite Fly Rod with orginal bag and tube
Up for auction is a 9ft 8 weight 2 piece vintage Winston fly rod with the original tube and rod sock. This is a slow action Winston 8wt. This rod is in excellent condition with only minor soiling on the cork grip due to use. I glanced over this rod and could only find few surface scratches on the blank. Considering the age of the rod it is in great condition and appears to have been fished very little. The ferrules still fit tight and it casts a Cortland 444 8wt WF Tropics Plus line perfectly. This rod will make a great salmon/steelhead rod. After contacting Winston the other day in regards to this rod I found out that this rod was made at the factory and was custom built for Hooper White but is a factory rod. This is a great rod I would keep but I just ended up coming across two other larger weight fly rods so I can't justify keeping ... morethis classic rod. I highly doudt you will ever come across another vintage Winston rod for my asking price. There was another vintage Winston Rod from the same era that just sold for $261.00.
