The Orvis Trident TLS 7'11" 2pc 4wt fly rod being auctioned here is in excellent lightly-used ... morecondition. Very well-cared for by its previous owner and seldom fished. This smooth-loading lightweight fly rod displays only the faintest signs of nominal cosmetic wear and tear in the expected high traffic areas. As photos show. The cork grip shows very little staining from previous handling and remains overall void of any major chips, gouges, or excessive missing fill. Still bright and shiny like it was when new, the handsome gold finished up-locking burl-wood reel seat looks great and functions perfectly too. A close inspection of the rod's glossy green blank from tip to butt reveals no signs of catastrophic abuse like deep scratches. Scores, or penetrating nicks that would in any way hint the rod's original strength or integrity as compromised, and a close review of the rod's guides shows no trace of tarnish, rusting or oxidization present, with no grooving, deformation, or misalignment found. A quick test-assembly and deep flexing of the rod confirms the ferrule still snug fitting. With no wobble, twisting, looseness or other signs of obvious distress recognized. I have used this rod mostly for lakes in combination with a Hardy Princess. There's nothing sophisticated about my primary method. it's called dragging Woolly Buggers. Sometimes I cast-and-retrieve nymphs. Note: I detest chironomid angling and virtually never fish them. Anyway between the slightly soft rod action and the click-pawl drag on the Hardy Lightweight Series reel. I have never been broken off in stillwater while using this outfit; and it has accounted for multiple 18- to 20-inchers in California(Crowley and Manzanita Lakes) Montana(Georgetown Reservoir) Wyoming(Lake Nescio) and Oregon(Chickahominy Reservoir) If a fish gives a little surge, I just let him bend ... morethe rod, which is an excellent shock-absorber for the fraction of a second it takes the to reel start up in reverse. This rod has been fished a couple of dozen days over the last 10 or so years. It has been stored in the Orvis rod tube which you see in the picture. If you live in central Florida you simply have to have a GREAT 3-4 wt fly rod. This Trident TL 3 WT. was my go to freshwater Rod. My philosophy when I was fishing freshwater was to throw out a small white Popper and have on hand one fly that would also get below the surface. Whatever I caught. I caught. So I would usually catch five sunfish for every one Bass. Some of the Bass were pretty heavy for a 3 wt. But they were great fun to fight. Because I tied on the circuit for many years I met all the representatives and owners of the various Rod companies. I was very fortunate in getting a solid connection with G. Loomis. And so for many years. Almost all of my rods were GLX's. I still think that the four piece GLX 9’ 8wt is the best all-around saltwater fly rod ever built. So before the Orvis I fished a 9 foot GLX 4wt. On one occasion I ... morewas in North Carolina fishing for Trout on both the Tuck and the Davidson. As luck would have it I bumped into a guide by the name of Richard Federation. We got to talking and I mentioned that for most of my fishing on freshwater both in North Carolina and Florida. A little smaller Rod would actually be better for me. Richard mentioned that he fished some bigger waters in North Carolina and that a 9 foot rod would be better for him. So we Rod’s for about a half hour. We then permanently traded rods and from that time on the Orvis 3WT was perfect for my fishing needs. It allowed me to get in closer to the shoreline particularly where overhanging brush was present. The Bass and the bream as well as North Carolina trout just loved hanging in the shade. This shoreline cover provided a perfect ambush spot for to target their prey. In Florida. I almost always used a three weight line and started out witha small white Popper. Provided by my good buddy, Atlanta Flytier Steve Davenport- If they weren't especially interested in the Popper I would switch to a small black Clouser(6 or#8 hook) If they were not interested in either. Orvis T3 8'6" 4 wt 2pc mid-flex fly rod
The Orvis T3 was the top-end of the Orvis rod line in the early 2000s. The heavier line weight T3s were. Well, heavy. But the T3 in lighter line weights were nice rods, and this 4 weight makes for a great casting, versatile fly rod that candle handle lighter indicator rigs, small streamers, and all sorts of dry flies. This rod shines on medium sized rivers and larger streams.
