Design is unlike anything previously or since produced by Hardy sold under their own name. Reel is 3 7/16 inches in diameter by 1 1/16 inches wide. Cast of a newly developed magnesium alloy the reel is extremely light weighing a mere 3.1 ounches- more than 30% lighter than comparible sized Hardy reels using traditional cast aluminum alloys. Most suitable for 5-7 weight rods. Reel is in good mechanical condition and has all its original parts with no loose rivets or screws. Cosmetically I would rate this reel as just fair to good- it has obviously been well used. Unfortunately, the finish Hardy used plagued this series of reels during its entire production. Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply inverting the single click pawl and reversing the single screw, double prong chromium line guard. Minimal"drag" may be applied via a plastic knob on the reverse which works on a spring that regulates the pressure on the single click pawl. Terrific clicking sound. Includes extra spool plus original vinyl reel case both in reasonable decent condition- there is no foam insert in the case. Former owner's name and phone number scratched into bottom of reel foot. Here is a very unusual ORVIS BATTENKILL IMPREGNATED FLY ROD. This is an exceptional rod The serial number on both pieces to this 2 piece rod is S-18. I called the ORVIS headquarters in Manchester to help us identify this great rod. They believe the S is a symbol for one of the ORVIS fly fishing schools off of Cape Cod. Mass. They believe it to be pre 1970 This is an 8 1/2 foot rod. Also marked 5 1/8 OZ T B F(9) One eye on the rod end is a little different from the others but the taping to this eye is identical to the taping on the other eyes. Shows very little use wear. If you are looking for a museum piece. Please move on to the next 7 1/2' Battenkill. If you are looking for a beautiful, chocolatey colored 60 year old Orvis that is ready to fish for another 60 years, then this is your rod. The original wraps were dried and cracked so it was re-wrapped in the correct#541 Gudebrod brown with three coats of varnish. The ferrules, winding check and tip tops were re-blued by the best man in the business- Dave Leclaire. They have a nice snug fit and the familiar pop when pulled apart. This is a sweet rod that deserves to be fished, as they cast 5 or 6 weights and are known to be great all-rounders for dry, wet and streamer fishing. vintage orvis impregnated bamboo fly rod battenkill and original case sock 2 tip
This is a vintage orvis battenkill fly rod up for auction. The rod comes with its original metal case. And the sock is included. The rod has 2 tips. The case has a description and specific on it. But its kind of hard to read. I'll do my best here: the case says battenkill, and at serial it says 59542, whispch is the same as one of the tips say. It says at weight 3 7/8 I believe. Length says 7 1/2 2 piece. And the last label is something to do with test I believe, and there is a code. The code looks like ct-12 and then do-6. I am not sure if this means its a 6 weight fly rod or not. I can't read the last label hardly at all. The bottom section measures 45 1/2 inches. The rod seat is cork. And there is a significant piece of cork missing, see pic. The reel retainer works fine. I see no serial number painted on it anywhere, and it looks ... moreto have never been repaired. One tip section measures 44 inches. This one has no serial number on it. And I believe this one is the original tip section with the rod. I also see a metal repair that was made, and I believe orvis did it. Please see pic. The piece is still solid and intact. But, its shorter than the bottom section and the other tip, so I believe this was factory repaired. The second tip is painted with serial number 59542. And is 46 inches long. This tip section is lighter in colt as far as the bamboo is concerned. It also has a removable tip section, which the other does not. It appears as if this section may have been added later, maybe by orvis when the original section was repaired? I am not sure of this, but it looks consistent. The other 2 rods that don't have a number on them tell me this battenkill could be pretty old. All in all. This is a nice rod that has solid intact eyelids and threads, and I don't see any cracks or breaks. I stated the repair, but otherwise, its a nice vintage bamboo rod, and should make a nice addition to an enthusiasts or collector of bamboo fly rods. I am going to ship this rod in its case. This is a Skinner era Battenkill. Serial number 52487. I purchased on consignment at a Connecticut fly shop about 5 years ago. Where it was for sale by the original owner. Original sack, the one that forces you to put the butt section ferrule facing down. No repairs, cork excellent, seat in great shape, ferrules pop nicely. All rod sections and tube serial numbers match. Works well with either a 5wt or 6wt line.

Tube is marked"8 ft, 2 Pc. 4 3/4 ounce, 13. However, there is no line size or serial number either on the rod or on the tube. These may have been written in pencil on the tube label and worn off. The 4 3/4 ounce weight would seem to me to indicate a larger line size. The number 13 might also tell you something. You can compare to other similar rods on eBay, or if you are a trout junkie you probably already know the line size. Rod probably dates from 1950s or 1960s or so. Vintage 8'6" Orvis 3 piece Trout model Bamboo Fly Rod purchased new by my great uncle and lost in storage for 64 years. This is a Battenkill model and includes the sock and aluminum case. Rod includes two tips. Serial number#7380 with all parts matching. Battenkill#7380 was entered into the Orvis ledger on February 7. 1950. This rod shows little or no use, and is in excellent condition. 16/64& 10/64 ferrules. Vintage Orvis Impregnated Bamboo Fly Rod GBF (8) WT Battenkill Style 99 #42845
According to Orvis this Fly Rod was Manufactured on July 14. 1966 and the Serial Number is 42845. I purchased it used in the late 1970's and fished with it only a few times then put it up. This Fly Rod was refurbished by Orvis in April of 2002 including new windings on guides, the bamboo was refinished, new labels and a new Aluminum Fly Rod Tube. It has not been fished since then. NOTE: One tip is 1 1/4 inch short.

Orvis Impregnated Battenkill Deluxe 6'6" Bamboo Fly Rod 2 piece Serial# 17256
6 foot 6 inch. 2 oz. Orvis Impregnated"Battenkill Deluxe" built by Calvin Skinner and George Reid on April the 27th 1955. Serial#17256. In excellent condition with only very minor wear on the reel seat. Otherwise this rod is in like new condition. Cork is in beautiful shape as this rod has seen very little use. Comes with original rod tube and sock. According to Orvis this is a 4 or 5 weight. Rod tube is in good condition with only minor wear. All pieces are of equal length and there have been no repairs. Orvis Battenkill Impregnated bamboo 8 1/2 ft, 8 wt, 2/2 rod, s/n 25467,
This is an 8 weight. 8 1/2 foot, 2/2 Orvis Battenkill Impregnated Cane/Bamboo fly rod. The serial number is 25467. I contacted Orvis and their records indicate that this rod was made on April 22. 1959 and the rod makers were Cal Skinner and George Reid. The ferrule size is 16. I do not know if this rod has ever been fished since I am not the original owner. I know I've never fished it. All the sections are the same length and there are two tips. There is a small dent in the original tube and much of the label has worn away. The rod sock appears to be original. The rod itself is in excellent condition. The cork looks like it has never been used or someone did an excellent job of cleaning it. The reel seat is bright and shiny and there aren't scratches on the butt end. I am not an expert on bamboo rods but the finish. Guides, seat and ... morecork certainly look to be in excellent condition.
