The following copy is a 1st edition of"The Rebel Invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania and Battle of Gettysburg" written by Prof. Michael Jacobs in 1863. The book was eventually published the next year in 1864. Professor Jacobs was a professor at Gettysburg College during the time of the battle and also a resident of the town. He witnessed the Battle of Gettysburg first hand and this book is the first a ctual printed accoun t of the battle. He began to write his book only a few months after the battle with the facts still fresh in his head. It is an am azing account from an actual witness to the fighting. The book has become extremely scarce over the years and is often found in varying conditions. M ost I have come across over the years have been in poor condition. I have only owned a few in very good condition. This is perhaps ... morethe best one I have had a chance to own. First of all. The binding and covers are in amazing condition as is the spine. This is the first copy I have ever seen where the spine is 100% complete and you can see the design. The inside of the book is in very good condition. The hinges are solid and perfect with no loose ness at all. The text is clean and bright without any underlining or writing. Now the best part is that the battlefield map is still present. Nine out of 10 times the ma p is long gone. Unfortunately many of the maps were taken out and framed as souvenirs since it was printed in 1863. This one is present and complete although it does have a tape repa ir to one small section. It is still connected solidl y to the boo k. I would rate this copy a 9.5/10 only due to the small tape repair on the map. This is about as clean and solid copy that you will ever find. It even has full 100% gold gilt on the title on the cover. This copy is definitely collector quality and would make a fantastic addition to any Civil War or antiquarian library.
