THIS REEL IS IN NICE SHAPE FOR SOMETHING ALMOST 100 YEARS OLD BUT HAS SOME MINOR SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES THAT AN OLD USED REEL WOULD HAVE. THIS IS RARE! The Okeh reels were the A.F. Meisselbach Manufacturing Company's first attempt to produce a level wind reel. The first model came out in 1922. To get around the patent owned by Shakespeare for the loop type level wind, they produced a falling line guide. It is neat to watch as it pushes the line to the edge of the frame, and then drops it into the guide. Shipping will be in the lower 48 states. Others may email for estimated cost. Up for bids is a vintage Meisselbach Tripart 580 baitcasting reel. This is a classic reel from the pre-level-wind era. Construction appears to be nickel-plated brass. The Tripart in the model name refers to the fact that the reel can be disassembled by unscrewing the left-hand and right-hand sideplates without the use of tools. The reel operates smoothly. There is a clicker in the left-hand side plate. Engaged with a sliding button, and which produces a nice smooth click. The right-hand sideplate is marked"Tripart" No. 580. Faceplate is stamped"N o 252"SYMPLOREEL" Level Winder" While under the lower crossmember reads"100 YARDS" The tailplate is stamped with the"MEISSELBACH-CATUCCI Newark, N.J. U.S.A. oval logo near the top and carries the Aug. 26,1924 Patent date near the bottom. Two antique Fly Fishing Reels. Meisselbach Expert& Union Hardware 7115S One reel is a Meisselbach Expert. Estimate it was manufactured before 1905. Only markings on the reel are EXPERT on the top bridge. Following the history of the Meisselbach Expert reel it appears to be Nickle plated brass. Reel is in rough shape. Not sure if complete or not. Reel needs a good cleaning and inspection to free up and see if restorable. Good wall hanger. Maybe parts reel. Second reel is a Union Hardware fly reel. Reel was manufactured in Torrington Connecticut. Reel has markings on backside but very difficult to read. Reel has not been cleaned or polished. Last digits of model number are.115S. Difficult to read due to the patina of the steel construction. Reel looks to be fully functional. Reel looks to be complete. Can't figure out if there is any ... morekind of drag adjustment. Clicker works, reel turns nice for its age. If I would have to guess reel is circa 1900-1910. Union reel experts please advise if my assumption is in error. This one is not only complete but has very little loss of plating. The click is strong as well. I have seen this reel for sale at $300 more than once. In addition. This reel comes with an original Okeh 620 Box. Now the box is not in the greatest of shape as it has had some repair work but I have seen these boxes go for over $100. Up for auction a Nice and rather Scarce 1907-1908 MEISSELBACH* ONE RING* TRI-PART" NON LEVEL-WIND'TAKEAPART' CASTING REEL. This is the third in a series of"transitional" varieties of the"Tri-part" reel built by A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. of Newark. N.J. Built from late 1907 through 1908, it was called the"One Ring" Tri-part and would be the very first true"takapart" version of this famous reel. Subsequent Tri-part models would have the removeable ring on both the headplate and tailplate. These are a tough version to find and are becoming quite scarce. Faceplate is stamped"Tri-part" with the hyphen) while the tailplate carries the four 1904 to 1907 patent dates. Under the lower crossmember reads"A.F.Meisselbach& Bro. Newark, N.J. Comes equipped with the earliest spool with straight shaft, strong clicker, tension control, counterbalanced handle with ivorioid grip and, for the first time, a"takapart" feature that allows to reel to be completely disassembled for servicing by simply unscrewing the headring by hand. Reel is in about Very Good to Fine condition for these, showing overall wear and light brassing. Actually looks much nicer than my ghetto camera makes it appear and displays nicely. Works perfectly and is among the smoothest-running reels I have ever seen. All in all, a nice example of this scarce, early variety from Meisselbach. There are 6 Martins. 1 Kalamzoo Miricle 1698 Mod C. A South Bend 1140 with the box. A Shakespeare 1837 with the box. And the Meisselbach Autofly I mentioned. The Martins are a#4 a#3. 2#2's and 2#1's. One of the#1's is locked up.There is also a red cloth bag I think came with one of these reels. A nice bunch of reels for someone that I don't need. Priced to sell I feel. Two nice tough automatice fly reels, Pflueger 775 Superex, Meisselbach
These two old classics both have strong springs and still work. I kept the vintage braided fly line on the Meisselbach because somehow it it has escaped the tackiness that you find with most old flly lines. Both show wear. But the patent dates are 1914 for the Meisselbach and 1907 for the Superex. It's amazing that they both work so well. Priority mail with Confirmation- flat $9.00 fee since they are relatively heavy. I will send a copy of the history with the reel. Some Meisselbach History Growing Up: August Frederick Meisselbach was born in Newark. NJ in 1865. He was the second son of German immigrants who came to the US in the 1850s. The family was all mechanically inclined with Gus' father working as a gunsmith in a Newark gun shop, and his older brother, William also followed in the machinist trade. This mechanical ability and an interest in fishing and hunting led Gus to create his own fishing reel. The Start: In the fall of 1885 20 year old A. F. Meisselbach entered the oak paneled office of Crane& Miller. Attorneys, with a drawing and samples in hand and an era was ... morebegun. The application detailing the petal-shaped spool cutouts to aid in line drying, the thumb brake and a click mechanism, and the spool mounted counterbalance and crank knob was unique enough that patent#336,657 was granted for the reel on February 23, 1886. By the summer of 1886 advertisements were appearing in the American Angler and other sporting journals. Proclaiming the virtues of the"Gogebic Reel. The reel also received press reviews in a new book by John Harrington Keene, Fishing Tackle. Its Materials and Manufacture. Demand for the new reel was enough that brother William joined Gus in manufacturing their product in a shop behind the Meisselbach home. They called their company. Meisselbach Bros. Fishing Reel Mfrs. Demand was great enough that they moved to a shop on Halsey Street in Newark in 1888. You are bidding on a used. Made in USA, antique fishing reel by A.F. Meisselbach Mfg and Co. Newwark N.J. It states: Tripart 581 Free Spool" on the side plate and three patent numbers on the other side plate. The foot also notes the maker and 80 yds. The clicker works, and the crank handle is smooth when you turn it. The free spool works as it should. The spool tension knob also works. The reel does shows a lot of wear and brass from age and use. See all photos and judge condition for yourself. I would rate the condition a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 as mint. The reel is in rough shape for appearance, but it works as it should and is smooth when you crank the handle. According to Meisselbach reel historian Phil White in his book Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels. This little reel was made between 1885 and 1919. With the only rubs through the plating on the spools underside where the brake rubs, this nickel plated reel is in excellent condition, with handle grasp that has no chips or cracks. The 257 has a number of features- level wind. Anti-backlash, push button takedown. It was advertised by the maker as the"Top of the Line" This reel is funcionally excellent, however is missing a bail that fits across the level wind mechanism. I think this reel was made shortly after the patent was assigned. Reel has a pleasing appearance although there are some scratches and plating loss, and the foot has been filed. The top is missing one side and has a piece of the black paper missing on the top. The label is still in good condition. This reel was made in Elyria, Ohio, so that dates it to the 1920s.
