Moose Horn Lodge

Description
Welcome to Moose Horn Lodge

We are a family owned fishing and adventure lodge located in Chapleau, Ontario and have been in the hospitality and fishing business since 1957. Our guests have described the cottages as an Oasis of Luxury in Ontario's Northern Wilderness. We have put all our money back into the lodge and now offer our guests outstanding accommodations that are totally unexpected in such a remote northern region. We are only four hours from the Michigan border.

We offer a bountiful diversity of fishing opportunities for Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Brook Trout, Whitefish and Perch.

Fishing at the Lodge:
The lodge is located on McLennan Lake where the dominant species is Walleye. Walleye fishing on our lake is good with Walleyes being common in the 1 to 3 pound range. Larger Walleyes in the 4 to 6 pound range also get caught but they are not as frequent. You can also catch Northern Pike and spring Whitefish fishing. It's all the other great fishing lakes in the area that has blessed us with an 85% customer return rate.

Backcountry Trophy Lakes & Streams:
Within 10 to 60 minutes from the lodge are dozens of spectacular fishing lakes. Most of the lakes have no camps or cottages and on a lot of the lakes, you will be the only party fishing. We can have boat cashes on these lakes but instead of leaving boats in the bush to get dirty or stolen, we keep boats on trailers ready to be towed. You will need a trailer hitch and 2-inch ball or bring your own boat.

Walleye:
These back country lakes many times have produced 100 Walleyes per day with exceptional size trophies in the 10-pound range and sometimes bigger. In these lakes Walleyes are common in the 1 to 4-pound range with a few 5 to 7-pounders thrown in.

Northern Pike:
The bigger lakes have been producing Northern Pike over 20 pounds and due to catch-&-release practices the availability of trophy Northern Pike increases every year. For guests who like to eat Northern Pike there are hoards of them in the 2 to 6-pound range.

Smallmouth Bass:
A few of the lakes produce unbelievable Smallmouth Bass fishing. Smallmouth Bass are common in the 1-3 pound range but guests enjoy catching many in the 4 to 5-pound range and occasionally a 6-pounder. Guests have reported finding spots where they catch bass after bass all afternoon.

Brook Trout:
We also have cold spring-fed lakes with Brook Trout. Most Brook Trout you catch are in the 1 to 3-pound range but guests often catch beautiful big Brook Trout in the 4 and 5-pound range. We have a couple of streams in the area as well that produce high numbers of good eating pan fryers in the 8 to 16-inch range with the occasional big one over 20 inches.

Accommodations:
We offer four large housekeeping lakefront cottages that sleep up to ten people. Each cottage has one or two bathrooms, up to four bedrooms, front deck and big windows with a beautiful view of the lake. The interiors feature hardwood floors, tongue & grove pine on the walls and ceiling, comfortable furniture and beds, fully equipped kitchen with all appliances, WIFI Internet and Satellite flat-screen televisions. We also have three clean and comfortable motel units on the water's edge.

Fun Summer & Winter Activities:
In the summer there are activities for the whole family to enjoy such as swimming, hiking, off-road cycling, horseback riding, ATVing, wildlife photography, canoeing, Blueberry picking and bird watching. In the winter we have snowmobile trails, ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. There are also drive-to attractions and activities in the area and in the town of Chapleau.

Hunting:
In the fall we offer packages for Black Bear Hunting. Black Bears in the 150 to 300 pound range are common with the occasional 400 pounder. We are right next to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve thus enjoying the highest population of Black Bears in the world. Resident Moose hunters with adult tags for WMU 31, 32, 35 and 38 are welcome to rent a cottage. The fall is also fantastic in the area for Grouse hunting. The woods in the area are just stuffed with Ruffed Grouse and Spruce Grouse.

There is nothing more relaxing than fall Grouse hunting. It gives you a chance to go for a nice long leisurely walk through the forest, breath in that crisp clean fall air and enjoy ... morea kaleidoscope of colors from the fall foliage.

There are hundreds of miles of ATV trails and game trails that will allow you to get deep into the forest but you really don't need to go far from the lodge before seeing Grouse. The Grouse are everywhere. We even have a few pairs walking around the grounds.

We have an unlimited number of Ruffed Grouse and Spruce Grouse for you to hunt. We do not have a package specifically for Grouse hunting so Grouse hunters just pay the regular cottage rates. A small game license is needed.

Black Bear Hunting Ontario has the highest population of Black Bears in the world. The greatest concentration of Black Bears in Ontario is in the Chapleau region. Chapleau has been ... morecalled the Black Bear Capital of Canada for many years and the reputation is justified. There are four main reasons why we have so many Black Bears.

First, the Chapleau area has a diverse landscape with many streams, rivers and lakes all located on typical Canadian Shield landscape. The rocky landscape produces the perfect environment for wild Blueberries, Strawberries and Raspberries to grow in great quantities. Berries are a staple diet of the bears. There is also selective logging. The logged areas open up new growth that produce grasses that the bears need to eat in order to keep digestive enzymes in balance and aid digestion. This is crucial to their overall health and longevity. Second, since the fall of the fur trade we have seen an amazing rebound in the populations of critters that the Black Bears like to eat. At the top of the list is Beavers, which is a bear's top source of meat. Third, the area has thousands of naturally occurring den sites. A good area to den in the winter reduces the mortality rate for both adult bears and cubs. Finally and most of all, we are next to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve.

The Chapleau Crown Game Preserve is the largest game preserve in the world with over 2,000,000 acres of protected land where no hunting is allowed. The preserve is a Black Bear manufacturing machine. The amount of hunting that takes place at our lodge and other lodges in the area does not even put a dent in the bear population. As soon as guests harvest a Black Bear another takes its place within hours. This is why the sighting rate of our hunting guests is well over 100%. Most hunters will see multiple bears. Guests who have hunted with us for a long time generally pass on smaller Black Bears and wait for the big males to come into the target zone. Because of this we do not achieve a 100% harvest rate every year. It's usually between 85% and 100%.

With such a high population of Black Bears just about every possible size can be seen. Most Black Bears range from 150 to 300 pounds. On occasion bears in the 400 pound range are harvested. There is always the chance for a super bear. Chapleau is home to the largest Black Bear ever recorded in Ontario. In 2010 a 1000 pound Black Bear was hit and killed by a logging truck on highway 101 about 20 miles west of our lodge. We don't want you to think you will ever see a bear that big but it sure is fun to dream.

In Ontario you can hunt with a bow, crossbow, rifle, muzzleloader or shotgun. You cannot hunt with a hand gun. By law in Ontario bows have to be a minimum 50lbs. Shotguns need a 50 caliber pellet. A rifle should be a 207 or bigger. Muzzleloaders should use a minimum of 100 grains within 25 yards of a bear.

Black Bear hunting is an exercise in stealth and patience. You are hunting an animal that can smell 700 times better than a Bloodhound. The more invisible you become the greater chance you have at a big trophy bear. The big older bears are smart and have a much better sense of smell than younger bears. Seasoned bear hunters that are fanatical about stealth find more success. Black Bear hunting is a lot of fun, especially for first timers.

Walleye Fishing: Our lodge is located on McLennan Lake, which is about 10 miles south of Chapleau. Our lake is smaller than some of the big lakes in the area. It is a crystal clear ... morelake and for this reason, has to be fished in the evening only for walleye. The Walleye are common in the 1 to 3 pound range and on occasion bigger Walleyes in the 4 to 5-pound range get caught. There are trophy Walleyes in the lake but it's very rare to see a 10-pounder. There are those exceptional days where the Walleyes are just feeding like crazy.

It is not uncommon to catch over 100 walleye in a 4 hour period in one of the nearby lakes in the area. We don't want you to think that you will see action like that on McLennan Lake but you can catch some nice walleye and it happens all the time on our drive-to lakes.

We promote catch & release on the home lake and ask that all Walleyes between 17.1 and 28 inches be released as they are in their prime spawning age. Another reason why we have a good Walleye population is because there is a high population of feeder fishing in the lake such as Whitefish, Dace, Suckers and some perch.

Northern Pike Fishing:

Lakes in the Chapleau area are home to a healthy population of Northern Pike and also produce some big trophies. Northern Pike in the south grow much faster but with warmer water there are also more parasites so Northern Pike rarely get over 10 pounds before they parish. In the far north towards the tree line and into the arctic tundra it's the exact opposite. Northern Pike live to be very old and become larger because of the clean water but they also grow a lot slower because the water is so cold and unfertile. Chapleau seems to be in the goldilocks zone where Northern Pike grow fast and live to a ripe old age. With a high population of Whitefish in our local lakes the Northern Pike are well fed and can get big.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing:

Most lakes in the Chapleau area are home to an ever growing population of Smallmouth Bass. Our area is now one of the top destinations in Ontario for Trophy Smallmouth Bass because the bass have thrived in our clear rocky lakes. The Smallmouth Bass evolved in the Great Lakes' Water System and the Mississippi River basin. Through the illegal introduction of fish as well as eggs being transported by waterfowl, the bass have made their way into most of northern Ontario's lakes. They were once considered an invasive species but their popularity has given them game-fish status.

Brook Trout Fishing:

Many guests are very surprised with the Brook Trout (Speckled Trout) fishing opportunities in the Chapleau region. We have beautiful streams and several lakes in the area with great trout fishing opportunities.

Perch Fishing

There is limited Perch fishing in the area. Because of the high population of Pike most of the Perch stay in the thick weeds. In the morning if you are catching Walleye and it's in an area with thick weeds, then most likely the Perch are in the thick weeds. As the day gets brighter the Walleyes will slow down so try mooring into the thick weeds and fish straight down off the boat with a small hook and a piece of worm. If you stir up the bottom with your anchor you should attract more Perch from a distance. Make sure you have a second Pike rod handy. A perch feeding frenzy attracts big Pike.

With a sports fishing license you are allowed to bring home 50 Perch, which is a great way to have lots of fish for the big fish fry.

Services
We are not ice fishing outfitters. We are open all winter and offer cozy and warm accommodations for people with their own ice fishing equipment. We do have a portable ice fishing ... morehut and guests can borrow our gas powered ice auger but it is best to bring your own equipment.

Throughout the winter guests visit the lodge and bring their snowmobiles as well as their own ice auger, ice tents and tip-ups. If you don't have snowmobiles you can fish through the ice for Walleye on McLennan Lake, which is the lake the lodge is located on. With a snowmobile there are dozens of lakes near by where you can catch Walleye, Northern Pike, Perch and Lake Trout.

Chapleau is a Mecca for snowmobiling. Just in the Chapleau area there are over 450 miles of groomed trails. From Chapleau many snowmobilers travel to-and-from Sudbury, Gowganda, Timmins, ... moreWawa and Foleyet. It's the most popular region for snowmobiling in Ontario.

We offer warm and cozy accommodations for travelers during the winter months. Fuel, fluids, parts and repairs can be purchased in Chapleau. Please make reservations well in advance.

Snowmobile
The Chapleau area is spidered with hundreds of miles of game trails, old logging roads and snowmobile trails. These are perfect trails for ATVing. ATVers can just take off into the ... morebush and explore lakes and Brook Trout streams that are almost never fished because you can only access them with an ATV. Another interesting thing about Chapleau is there is a town bylaw that allows ATVers to drive on the road. You can boot around town and have lots of fun. You are not limited to the bush.

There is no ATV club in Chapleau anymore, mostly due to tiny resident population and the lack of volunteers. As a result we do not have maps of trails available to us at this time. There are no volunteers to maintain any of the trails during the summer but they do get cleared in the winter. ATVers have to be careful and drive safely. ATVers that come to Chapleau need to have a good compass, especially when heading down uncharted game trails. ATVers can buy parts, fluids and accessories in town.
