Northern Pike: Mattagami Lake is a large Canadian Shield lake with 170 miles of shoreline. The high population of feeder fish produces great numbers of good size Northern Pike.... more

Northern Pike in our lake are found just about everywhere and are easy to catch. In the spring, many of the larger Trophy Northern Pike are caught as they are in shallow water feeding on spawning Walleyes. Our guests have caught Northern Pike up to 37-pounds.

Walleye :

Mattagami Lake and the Minisinakwa River are well known for having great Walleye fishing. There are many shoals, sandbars, weed-beds and other great structures, which are perfect habitat for large numbers of tasty Walleyes.

There are rivers running in-and-out of the lake with current running into deep holes and several waterfalls that can be boated to, which are also great areas to hold large populations of Walleyes, especially in the spring.

Smallmouth Bass:

TwinJ Hide-A-Way is lucky to be located in an area of Mattagami Lake, which has the best Smallmouth Bass fishing. No other part of the lake has a population density of Smallmouth Bass like our secluded corner of the lake.

Our guests enjoy easy access to really exciting Smallmouth action. Not only do we have great numbers of bass; we have trophy Smallmouth reaching 6-pounds with a few a little bigger. Our Smallmouth Bass also fight harder and jump higher then bass we have seen in other lakes. Last year's biggest Smallmouth Bass that we know of was 6.25 pounds. Since many of our bass fishing guests promote catch-&-release, there may have been bigger fish caught.

We are lucky to be in the heart of some of the best wilderness canoe routes in Ontario. Our canoe rental guests have access to three of the top wilderness canoeing rivers in Ontario, ... morewhich are the Nabakwasi River Canoe Route, Circle 4 Canoe Route and the Spanish River Canoe Route.

We rent good quality and comfortable canoes, which are stable for open lake canoeing and tough for the river rapids. Canoe rentals come with paddles, life jackets, safety kits and floatation bags.

All canoe routes are maintained by the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resource). There are designated campsites along the rivers but you do not need to stay at these campsites if you do not want to. The no glass and no cans rules still apply like any provincial park. Food and drink must be stored in reusable or burnable containers. You must leave your campsite absolutely clean.

Usually, Ontario residents do not need permits to camp on crown land but because this is an area maintained by the MNR, all canoe trippers need permits, which are very inexpensive.
