At Mashkinonje Lodge fishing is our passion! We have a steeped history in catering to our guests, many of whom have been returning for twenty-five plus years. Our priority is to provide ... moreyou with the equipment and knowledge necessary to make your fishing expedition both a pleasure, and a success. Of course we can't take all of the credit; being located on of the most productive lakes in Ontario certainly helps!
Simply put, Lake Nipissing is a bonafied fish factory and if it is outstanding fishing you are looking for, there are few places that compare. The fifth largest lake in Ontario (excluding the great lakes), Nipissing covers approximately 850 square kms. It is relatively shallow (about 30 ft. in most places) and as a result, is well aerated, which leads to an abundance of healthy plant, plankton and resulting fish life.
Mashkinonje Lodge is located on the west arm of Lake Nipissing. The west arm differs from the main body of water due to its rocky shorelines, deeper water depths and the fact that it is sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds experienced on aast Nipissing. On some parts of Nipissing, high winds can keep anglers out of the water for days at a time. The west arm offers access to the big water, but is sheltered enough to ensure you will be fishing in almost all conditions. Walleye: Lake Nipissing is a strong fishery that produces both size and numbers. With each passing year the lake yields larger specimens with double digit tanks occurring regularly. The average size of Lake Nipissing's Walleye is an indicator of its productive fishery. Walleye in the one to two pound range are plentiful, three and four pound common, with many Walleye exceeding more than five pounds. The West Arm is home to a healthy population of fish and continues to produce with each passing year.
Musky: Lake Nipissing is home to some absolute super tanker Muskies, including the 58 inch world record catch and release musky (caught in October of 2006). The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources also reports netting a massive 70 pound Musky while test netting in the spring of 2008. Big water equals big fish! These elusive beasts can be hard to locate for even the experienced angler. However, the West Arm is famous for producing both size and numbers of good quality fish.
Bass: The most underrated species of Lake Nipissing has to be Smallmouth Bass. The lake is host to a truly remarkable population which are largely ignored by anglers. Here you can expect to catch smallies in both size and numbers. Fish in the one to four pound range are common with many going five and six pounds. Largemouth Bass can be found all season long in any of the many shallow, weedy bays and along shorelines. Largemouth Bass in the one to four pound range are common with bigger fish being caught throughout the season.
Northern Pike: Lake Nipissings size and forage base allow it's Northern Pike to reach impressive sizes. The lake has a diverse structure with many sunken islands and reefs, providing excellent forage areas for these predatory beasts. Northern Pike in Lake Nipissing are common in the 2 to 5 lb range. However, each year we see many fish caught are caught in the 15 lb range with the occasional monster in excesss of 20 lbs. If your targeting Northern Pike specifically, your chances at a trophy are good.

Fishing Lake NipissingCallander Bay - A Fishing Experience To quote Ontario Out of Doors Magazine, March 2004, "Lake Nipissing is legendary for being a Walleye factory".... more
Callander Bay is a major spawning site for Walleye, making it one of the best locations to fish. Nipissing is a large and diverse lake with onshore weedlines that hold Pike and Muskie, rocky shoals with Smallmouth Bass and shallow, weedy bays that hide the Largemouth variety.
Islands in the bay provide structure for fish and fishermen alike, making it possible to get out fishing regardless of the weather. Complimentary maps are available along with information on hot spots, tackle and techniques used. Every measure is taken to ensure your fishing trip is a success. Our screened in fish cleaning building has running water, cutting boards and a seven-foot sink for the big ones. Not sure how to clean them? Just ask, we'll be happy to show you!
Some of the lures you might consider bringing with you for walleye would be jigs, especially in the spring and fall, tipped with a worm or minnow. Chartreuse, red, white and pink seem to work the best. We use a lindy rig quite a bit in the summer and generally fish in 25 feet of water or less. For fishing pike, large bucktails and big spoons like red eyes are the best. For bass fishing, buzz baits or a hook with split shot and a worm are successful while fishing structure along the shoreline and islands. All of this tackle can be purchased in our store. When staying at Bayview Camp, don't be afraid to ask what to use, as every lake is different and we are here to help. Still not sure of success? Then a fishing guide with over 25 years of experience can be arranged for you. Fish Restocking on Lake Nipissing Our local tourist association has been restocking Callander Bay and the South Shore for years. We have our own hatchery running and collect about 2 million eggs each spring. With approximately 80% of them hatching, that means 1.6 million fry are released in the lake each year.
In 1999 the MNR, with the full consent of the tourist industry, implemented a four fish limit on pike and walleye. There is also a protected slot size in effect. Any walleye between 40 to 60 centimeters must be released. The reason for this policy is to protect the spawning size females.
Sturgeon and walleye spawning bed rehabilitation has been completed at several key locations and is ongoing with more sites planned in the near future.
Our restocking program, in conjunction with the slot size, spawning bed rehabilitation and other conservation efforts has resulted in measurable improvements and a viable, sustainable sport fishery. The response from our customers has been excellent, since conservation is everyone's responsibility.

The French River is rated as one of the top Walleye areas. Lunker sized small mouth bass, tackle smashing musky and northern pike are being caught in increasing numbers and size. The ... moreearly spring season is best for volume of walleye and pike. Late spring and summer bring the added challenge of small mouth bass and muskie. Anglers can also land sturgeon, whitefish and a variety of pan fish such as perch, etc. Grappling with a Channel catfish in fast water is also a challenge and they make great appetizer at our Fish Fry.
The comfortably furnished cabins have automatic heat, at least one four piece bathroom and daily maid service to ensure a relaxing stay. Cottages range in size from one bedroom with sitting area to 6 bedrooms with 2 living rooms.
Fishing is a sport, not a science and a satisfying fishing holiday can always be enhanced with the help of a professional guide. One of the highlights of a guided fishing trip is the shore lunch that goes with it. We also offer a ready to go shore lunch if you want to have one on your own. All you need to add is the freshly caught fish.
During the last 18 years, the Wolseley Bay Walleye Ponds, in co-operation with the Ministry of Natural Resources have been very actively involved in a Walleye rearing and stocking program. Eleven years ago, the association introduced a slot size program where you catch and release the breeders of each species. The results of these programs are now showing up in growing numbers. Since these are ongoing programs it certainly bodes well for future fishing in our area.
Releasing fish within the slot limits means you are releasing the breeding fish. This photo shows one bass under the 13″ limit and one bass over the 17″ limit. Any Bass that are caught between these two sizes must be released.
