To be completely honest I know nothing about this item. I found it on the Jersey Shore and have no idea of it's age or origin. It looks antique due to the cork and glass looks hand blown but it also could be a reproduction. I see no markings on the glass. Glass floats are approximately 10.5 inches around and the whole piece is about 10 inches in length. Glass is not broken or cracked. Payment is due at auctions end. This fishing float has very unique features: ripples in the glass from the hand-blowing process. Dark green color, a deep or extended seal button plug, two surface bubble chips( most lik ely from surviving the po unding surf while crossing the reef at high-tide) see photos. My family lived on many different islands in the western Pacific from 1959 to 1994 and were avid beachcombers. In 1972. Unless you were working for the Trust Territory. No cracks or chips except those to the seal button as you would expect in a vintage float. Beautiful 45" DARK BLUE GLASS FISHING FLOAT
This Japanese float is 45" and very dark blue. Small nicks on seal button(viewable in pics) The ball itself has a few flea bite nicks here and there. This was a working float and is in the net used for that purpose. It has the actual net that it was found with. Not so fancy but very good for hanging and displaying this colorful float. I have to trim my collections. Truth is I have stopped collecting floats and went back to my life love of guitars. I have purchased several vintage guitars an will likely collect a few more. But it isnt fair to my wife for my collections to be taking up so much space. Vintage Japanese glass fishing float with"Z" mark. Identified in GLASS BALL MARKS book by Walt Pich. It has a 3.26" diameter including net and the"Z" measures 7/8" in height. The color is aqua/blue green,float has bubbles, a button seal with the raised"Z' mark and no cracks. It does have the usual chipping around the button seal. The first 4 photos were taken indoors and the last photo was taken outside on a sunny day. Vintage Green Glass 3" Fishing Float Bubbles in Bubbles Japanese Character Mark
Beautiful 3" Japanese glass fishing float. Light green in color. A fascinating amount of bubbles in this one with some light turn lines in the surface. The seal plug has a Japanese character which I am told(by a friend that is conversant in Japanese) that the character is a variant of a character that means"great" or"large" in English. Probably not meant to be a specific word but more likely a maker's mark. This is the first of four found at an estate sale last Thursday and one that appears authentic to me. Offering a great blue colored 3" glass fishing float done in a 3 piece mold. Another estate sale find that is highly whittled or dimpled.see the shadows in the pictures for the full effect. This one shows wonderfully well. Especially when lit. The mold lines are very pronounced and extend under the seal plug. Please see the photos for condition and better description. Clear Glass Fishing Float with Original Netting- 18" I was unable to determine the marking on this glass fishing float. So I cannot be sure if it is a Japanese or Norwegian float. Please see all photos to make your own determination. It is very clear that this was used, and definitely used in the Sea, per the wear on the original netting. The marking on the bottom has"20" and then a symbol that looks like an oblong circle with 2 pointed triangles coming from each side of the circle. Hand-blown into a 3-part, hand-carved wooden mold. Some were actually blown on board fishing vessels using small furnaces. Dimples' were caused by blowing heated glass into the hand-carved wooden mold. A s the glass cools it is imprinted with carve marks from inside the mold. Beautiful rare purple 38" Japanese fishing float
This float is gorgeous and very rare. This float was likely purchased in Japan before it seen use. And it was some time ago as when I bought it. Explanation given was: Sellers Father had served in WWII and worked with Engineers in Japan for years after war. Likely if this is true He Knew what he had, but it was put in a box an into the basement it went till Father passed. Then it was found there packed away when estate was in prep for sale. A few collectors have asked if I would sell it in past with good offers. It is only fair that it be auctioned here because of this fact. Remember this is a glass fishing float, and as such it has flaws. Mainly making this one more stunning. No crack or chips. I believe this to be a fair and honest starting price. I would keep it for any less as am sure I will never get a chance to own something like this ... moreagain. In fact every purple float I have seen hashad its own distinct character.It is tough to part with this seriously. But alas my love of guitars, amps, basses and such have taken priority. I must buy a couple more vintage guitars bfore prices are to high. But I certainly understand the spirit of love for glass floats. It has been a joy to show this gem to the beach combers and float buyer/ collectors in my life. At 38" it is mostly very dark purple see examples. If not by a window or light nearly looks black. But as soon as any light is applied swirls of deep purple, royal purple and maybe even goofy grape come to sight along with a shade of purple overall you can explain yourself. It is comepletely purple. No lavender, black or blue. Stricktly purple. I had a very hard time with pics as camera on notepad shows colors to with of blue that is not seen with eye. Vintage Thick Aqua Glass 6" Fishing Float, Heavy at 1 lb. 6.4 oz, Hand Blown
This is the last and largest of the 4 estate sale floats from last week. It weighs in at a whopping 1 lb. 6.4 oz which is a lot of glass for a 6" diameter float. It is a dark aqua in color and I could find no makers mark. The seal plug is heavy and well formed. This float looks as if it spent some time on the beach prior to discovery as it has some sand scouring along with a bit of scratching and a few very small open bubbles. These features add to its authenticity. There are a lot of bubbles in the glass along with some swirls and mold roll marks. It is not completely round but has a bit of bulging and a few low spots as can be seen in the pictures. Especially#12) All in all a great old glass float. Antique Nautical Glass Fishing Float / Buoy with Clover from Europe!
Great for decoration. Great for glass collectors-You are bidding on a vintage, antique, green glass fishing float with a diameter of around 5 inches, with a clover embossed on the seal button! As you can see in the photos. The clover is clearly visible, but faint on one side. I can’t tell if the clover has worn down over time. Or if the original embossing was faint on that side. This is a maker’s mark of some sort, though I am not certain of the origin of this float, except that it came from Europe. Some people think it came specifically from a German glasshouse, but I’m not 100% confident in that. The mark is really neat, but my favorite thing about this float is how it’s worn uniformly from the ocean. Notice how the glass isn’t sparkling clear? That’s because the float has been slowly worn over the course of many years at sea, a trait highly ... morevalued among collectors of“working” floats. Many times, floats only display partial wear(a scuff or two) The fact that this float is worn uniformly over the entire surface is unusual, and I’ve seen floats with this characteristic(with no mark at all! sell for hundreds of dollars in antiques stores. The other thing I love about this float is that it is free-blown. This means there are no mold seams, which is usually a characteristic of older floats, though I am not certain of this float’s age. Also, there are even a few tiny bubbles in the glass! This is known as a“working float” because it was actually used by European fishermen. I know this because I found it myself on a deserted beach in the Caribbean. You can see in the photos that the float bears the marks of hard use. Too: these scuffs and scratches tell a story about this float that no words can tell, and add great character to this float. In the mid-twentieth century. Metal and plastic floats began to replace these beautiful glass floats in Europe. My best guess is that this float was made and used sometime in the years between 1915– 1955. This is a large green glass fishing float with the netting. The diameter is 11 inches and it measures 37 inches in circumference. Has the double F marking pictured.Which from what information I could find said it was made by Hokuyo Glass Company of Japan. No cracks that I found has normal wear from floating around the ocean and washing up on shore. The item is the way it was found when it drifted ashore Thanks for looking. I purchased a box of fishing floats from a gentleman that was stationed in Alaska(with the military) in the 60's. He brought the floats home with him. Stored them in the basement under the stairs, and completely forgot about them until now. None of the floats have been cleaned or messed with in anyway since he picked them up off the beach. Some of them still retain some tiny pieces of seaweed or other beach related"dirt" The number in the initial title description is for my reference only. Vintage glass fihsing float. I picked upon in a fishing village in Ada, Okinawa many years ago. This one is tightly netted with rope and in very good condition. No cracks or breaks, lots of bubble and wear small nicks from years of use. It has a large sealing button, hard to see as it is right under the main knot(handle if you will) This float measures about 9" in diameter(with rope) and 29" in circumference(with rope) It's hard to guesstimate the actual size without the rope. Welcome we are pleased to offer this old Nautical Maritime blown glass fishing net float. This glass is a very thick deep olive green color. The ball measures 36” around. The net is original I tried to clean it up with water only as there was seaweed pieces stuck to the net rope as well as a thick layer of dust on the ball. The bottom of the glass ball has a thick glass plug where it was hand blown. There are some dings on the outside of the glass you can tell it was used over the years but still in good displayable condition and a very low start price. I don’t know where it came from but we do have many old fishing villages here on the West Coast of Florida especially the historic Tarpon Springs sponge diving.
