The abrasiveness of the sand etches the surface giving it a frosted look. However the portions covered by net do not become sand etched because the net protects the glass. This process leaves a net pattern of clear glass that is not frosted on those portions that have been protected by the net which later become visible when the net disintegrates after years at sea. This is a large green glass fishing float with the netting. The diameter is 11 inches and it measures. Just under 38 inches in circumference. Has the double F marking pictured.Which from what information I could find said it was made by Hokuyo Glass Company of Japan. No cracks that I found has normal wear from floating around the ocean and washing up on shore. In the pictures I included a couple of pictures I took before I cleaned the glass. Vintage Opaque Fishing Float Color Red Amber. Orange, Yellow Neversink+Japanese Hello Collector, Thank you for stopping by to view this auction. I hope what I have will be something that a Fishing Float Collector will want to add to their collection. The Glass Orb Fishing Float is medium size. It is 6"d. and 18-1/2" circumference. The colors of the glass are really impressive. It is somewhat opaque. Yet translucent when held to light. At the top it's color is light yellow. The color darkens to orange tones moving toward the button. The color continues to change to burnt orange then into red tones moving near the button. Then right around the button area is the deepest of the colors. Showing a dark red amber. While looking into the float there are visible swirl like lines that are inside the glass where the colors begin their ... morechange. The glass is pretty thick or heavy. The thickest points in the orb float are around the button and at the opposite end of the button. It looks as if when the float was blown and the glass was still hot. The glass ran and settled leaving a pool at the opposite end of the button. Also leaving the uneven lines along the inside walls and the uneven color through out the float. There are also tiny air bubbles trapped in the walls of the float. Some of them have a dark halo of color around them. On the outside surface there are tiny white specks. At first I thought that these were specks of sand. After taking a closer look I could see that the specks were small nicks in the glass. Some cant be felt since the glass walls are so thick the nicks are almost internal. There are a few scratches in a few areas around the float. You wont be able to see these things in the pictures. They do show some things around the surface but not whats inside the float. I don't see any manufacture markings anywhere on this piece. The button area has a glob of glass around it that is inside. Then the button itself has been pressed down leaving a circle about the size of a quarter. Then pushed in

This is a 3 and 1/2" float with some distortion. There is a dent near the bottom and the sealing button seems to be pulled up to almost make a neck. It is out of round. The brownish-yellow swirl is very prominent around the mid-section. Also about 1/3 of the bottom is covered with very fine net markings. The sealing button has a couple of chips. It weighs about 13 pounds. I am unsure of the maker- There appears to be marks on the pontil edge as though someone took an instrument and made markings into the glass while the glass was still hot. Or"kita" in Japanese meaning"Company of the North" has been used by the Hokuya Glass Company since about 1949 and discontinued manufacturing around 1980. Measures approx. 11" in diameter(the glass) With total circumference including the net of approx. 41" Amazingly,the double"FF" mark, and"seal button" is intact and in excellent condition considering the wear and tear of being in the Pacific Ocean- not sure when"she" landed in the Hawaiian Islands. This is a Roughly 6" Wide. Very Clean, 19th Century Glass Blown+Pontiled Fishing-Float, that apparently has never seen the water, for long durations, any way. There is a lot of debate, these days as to what Glass Factories, on the east coast, would have manufactured these Floats, This one couldn't look closer to a Keene Demi-John Bottle, and the Pontil is Great!Originally looked to me, that there could have been the outline of some Initials, blown in the glass, but couldn't too clearly. Acquired at a local, Cape Cod, Massachusetts =Antique Estate Flea-Market, early one recent Saturday Morning. Up for auction is this very special glass fishing float. Marked F1 of oliven-amber color. The orign of the glass float is Flesland Glasswork in Norway. The glass fishing float is signed NJ. Being the danish marine painter Niels Jensen(1907- 2003) He was a danish painter. Particularly known for his marine paitings from Blokhus in Denmark.
