RARE Vintage Japanese Handblown Glass Fishing Float Bouy
Offering 1 float as pictured The vintage glass float pictured above was found beach combing in Bristol Bay. Alaska. It is approximately 3 1/2 inches in diameter with a 10 3/4 in circumference. This one is made of heavy glass with two overlapping large bubbles and small bubbles throughout. There is a faint hint of net etching visible on one side. It is aqua green in color and has a large well formed button on the inside of the float at the seal. The makers mark is elaborate and detailed with figures stamped on all four sides of the seal. Please view the photos. I have operated a salmon fishing camp there for the past 33 summers and spent the 3 summers prior to that exploring Bristol Bay. I love to beach comb and find these floats after storms wash them ashore. I am selling my entire collection. Each has made an incredible journey over many ... moreyears crossing the Pacific and the Bering Sea. I do know that many of these arrived on the Bristol Bay shores long ago since current storms that pound the coast line will wash them out of sand dunes where they have been buried under 20 to 30 feet of sand for who knows how long. Since these are found in remote areas. Some have sat on the beach exposed to the constantly blowing sand and have been etched on the side facing the prevailing wind sometimes leaving a pattern of the netting that once covered them. Others have rolled and tumbled thru some incredibly rocky areas and safely reached shore. This sometimes results in the seal button on the bottom having small nicks along the edge. Those that have been stranded and set afloat or rolled by the wind exposed to multiple storms have all sides sand blasted to a frosty appearance. Still others are sparkling clear. Some are very heavy glass with many bubbles I know very little history concerning the specific glass blowers and their marks so. Can not provide much detailed information regarding the significance or the various markings. The winner can check them out and make there own determinations.

This is a 5 feet x 10 feet piece of heavy fishing net we beachcombed on the Washington coast(1-8-11) The measurements are taken by counting the 3 inch squares. You will need to fasten in numerous places to stretch the net back into shape. The cord is stiff and needs some stretching to get the full measurements. If you just lay out the net it will measure 1 foot short side to side and 1 foot short top to bottom. Just letting everyone know. The pattern measures about 3"X3" squares and the BLACK cord the netting is made with is about 1/8" wide. It is in good used condition and is not like the new stuff everyone is selling. Would be a great piece for decoration or another use! This piece was cut from a huge piece we found. There could be some fading of color here and there. Remember that this stuff probably caught Salmon or some ... moreother fish at one time. Lucky for us it broke loose from its floats and wash up on the beach! This Japanese glass fishing float has a broken off nubbin that rattles around inside the float. The float is hand blown. Has bubbles and swirls in the glass and has a diameter of 5.18" including the rope net. It has the usual chipping around the seal button. Vintage European Glass Fishing Float / Buoy with Clover Embossed!
Great for decoration. Great for glass collectors-You are bidding on a vintage, antique, green glass fishing float with a diameter of around 5 inches, with a clover embossed on the seal button! As you can see in the photos. The clover is clearly visible, but faint on one side. I can’t tell if the clover has worn down over time. Or if the original embossing was faint on that side. This is a maker’s mark of some sort, though I am not certain of the origin of this float, except that it came from Europe. Some people think it came specifically from a German glasshouse, but I’m not 100% confident in that. The mark is really neat, but my favorite thing about this float is how it’s worn uniformly from the ocean. Notice how the glass isn’t sparkling clear? That’s because the float has been slowly worn over the course of many years at sea, a trait highly ... morevalued among collectors of“working” floats. Many times, floats only display partial wear(a scuff or two) The fact that this float is worn uniformly over the entire surface is unusual, and I’ve seen floats with this characteristic(with no mark at all! sell for hundreds of dollars in antiques stores. The other thing I love about this float is that it is free-blown. This means there are no mold seams, which is usually a characteristic of older floats, though I am not certain of this float’s age. Also, there are even a few tiny bubbles in the glass! This is known as a“working float” because it was actually used by European fishermen. I know this because I found it myself on a deserted beach in the Caribbean. You can see in the photos that the float bears the marks of hard use. Too: these scuffs and scratches tell a story about this float that no words can tell, and add great character to this float. In the mid-twentieth century. Metal and plastic floats began to replace these beautiful glass floats in Europe. My best guess is that this float was made and used sometime in the years between 1915– 1955. We live on an island in Puget Sound in Washington State. And many years ago, when the salmon were bountiful, a large number of fishing boats would ply the waters off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska to seine for salmon. They would use wood fishing floats to buoy the nets, and this is one of those floats. Made of cedar, this float still retains a bit of the red paint it originally had. Nice decor item. There is a"signature" which is hard for me to decipher but might mean something to some of you experts out there. Hand-blown into a 3-part, hand-carved wooden mold. Some were actually blown on board fishing vessels using small furnaces. Dimples' were caused by blowing heated glass into the hand-carved wooden mold. A s the glass cools it is imprinted with carve marks from inside the mold. Creating a k aleidoscope of patterns. Sometimes 50 miles(80 km) long, were set adrift in the ocean and supported near the surface by hollow glass balls or cylinders containing air to give them buoyancy. These glass floats are no longer being used by fishermen, but many of them are still afloat in the world's oceans, primarily the Pacific. They have ... morebecome popular collectors’ items. The Japanese started producing these floats in the early 1900s. Fishermen lost much of their gear during their ocean trips or dumped it over the side when their boats were full. When a float broke free. It started along journey along Pacific surface currents, from Japan up to the Aleutians and down the West Coast, then it headed back to Japan to start the trip over again. The first Asian floats came ashore along the West Coast just before 1920 and have been rolling in ever since. They were made from blown glass and are easy to identify compared with later varieties. Look for flaws in the glass or thousands of bubbles in the oldest floats. I purchased this beautiful aqua/green colored buoy. As pictured, over 40 years ago, although it could date back as much as 100 years. It shows wonderful signs of wear. Bubbles in the glass, etc. but has no chips, cracks or damage that I can determine ~ the perfect flaws you would expect from years a-sea… ~ and it is beautiful! Green glass fishing float-- 4 inch
This is a beautiful grass green 4 inch hand blown float. It's glass is heavy& has swirls and bubbles typical of hand blown glass items. It has a very light film on the inside-looks like it had moisture in it at the time it was blown that dried prior to its being sealed. It has the film over about a quarter of it. The rest is speckles. This does not interfere with color. Is has a large rub mark on the pontil. I think it is authentic but not used for fishing. It's in great shape& is definitely vintage as I purchased it second hand in the late'80s. Net is not original. It's a great piece to add to any nautical, glass or float collection. Posted with
