Early original Real Photo Post Card(RPPC) entitled“ENGLISH SPEEDBOATS IN BORKUM” Borkum is an island and a municipality in the Leer District in Lower Saxony. Northwestern Germany. View shows circular wakes of these fast powered British Coastal Motor Boats. During the First World War. Following a suggestion from three junior officers of the Harwich destroyer force that small motor boats carrying a torpedo might be capable of traveling over the protective minefields and attacking ships of the German Navy at anchor in their bases, the Admiralty gave tentative approval to the idea and, in the summer of 1915, produced a Staff Requirement requesting designs for a coastal motorboat for service in the North Sea. These boats were expected to have a high speed. Making use of the lightweight and powerful petrol engines then available. The speed of the ... moreboat when fully loaded was to be at least 30 knots(56 km/h) and sufficient fuel was to be carried to give a considerable radius of action. They were to be armed in a variety of ways, with torpedoes, depth charges or for laying mines. Secondary armament would have been provided by light machine guns, such as the Lewis gun. Weight of a fully loaded boat, complete with 18-inch(460 mm) torpedo, was to not exceed the weight of the 30-foot(9.1 m) long motor boat then carried in the davits of a light cruiser, i.e. 4.5 tons. The CMBs were designed by Thornycroft. Who had experience in small fast boats. Engines were not proper maritime internal combustion engines(as these were in short supply) but adapted aircraft engines from firms such as Sunbeam and Napier. Johnson 900 Series Brushed Motor 12 volts, gear drive graupner boats tug ship
These are a couple of Johnson 900 series 12v motors. One works excellent and is in very good condition. The other one in the last pic wasn't shimmed right in the back. The shaft needs to go forward more so the fan blades don't hit the brush holders. I don't know if it could be fixed. But will include it for parts. The shafts on each one seem to have been very slightly shaved on 1 side. It could just be a heavy scrape and shouldn't be a problem. These are considered torque motors and should not be used for high rpm applications. They were the biggest low-voltage DC motors made. The 800 series are the largest now. Also including an aluminum motor mount for it. These motors went for around $70 each from Johnson distributors. I don't have the exact specs on them. But they should handle up to 18 volts. I'm pretty sure these ... moreare it. 12v nom. 6-18v operating 3000 rpm at 12v no load current is.4a current at 12v is 5 amps stall is 20.3a. Length 85mm.
