This is the rarest and smallest of sizes for the NW glass floats. This is a NorthWest Glass 3+1/2" tall float made in Seattle. Washington in the 1940s. It is the smallest of the NW glass. The pontil knob has NO chips on the edge or knob. There are very minor scratches. The bottom has markings but they are not legable. No chips or cracks! This is a 5 feet x 10 feet piece of heavy fishing net we beachcombed on the Washington coast(1-8-11) The measurements are taken by counting the 3 inch squares. You will need to fasten in numerous places to stretch the net back into shape. The cord is stiff and needs some stretching to get the full measurements. If you just lay out the net it will measure 1 foot short side to side and 1 foot short top to bottom. Just letting everyone know. The pattern measures about 3"X3" squares and the BLACK cord the netting is made with is about 1/8" wide. It is in good used condition and is not like the new stuff everyone is selling. Would be a great piece for decoration or another use! This piece was cut from a huge piece we found. There could be some fading of color here and there. Remember that this stuff probably caught Salmon or some ... moreother fish at one time. Lucky for us it broke loose from its floats and wash up on the beach! There is a musty smell or ocean smell from the netting being in the salt water but can be easily washed in a sink of soap or bleach. Gets rid of the smell all together! This Japanese glass fishing float has a broken off nubbin that rattles around inside the float. The float is hand blown. Has bubbles and swirls in the glass and has a diameter of 5.18" including the rope net. It has the usual chipping around the seal button. Vintage European Glass Fishing Float / Buoy with Clover Embossed!
Great for decoration. Great for glass collectors-You are bidding on a vintage, antique, green glass fishing float with a diameter of around 5 inches, with a clover embossed on the seal button! As you can see in the photos. The clover is clearly visible, but faint on one side. I can’t tell if the clover has worn down over time. Or if the original embossing was faint on that side. This is a maker’s mark of some sort, though I am not certain of the origin of this float, except that it came from Europe. Some people think it came specifically from a German glasshouse, but I’m not 100% confident in that. The mark is really neat, but my favorite thing about this float is how it’s worn uniformly from the ocean. Notice how the glass isn’t sparkling clear? That’s because the float has been slowly worn over the course of many years at sea, a trait highly ... morevalued among collectors of“working” floats. Many times, floats only display partial wear(a scuff or two) The fact that this float is worn uniformly over the entire surface is unusual, and I’ve seen floats with this characteristic(with no mark at all! sell for hundreds of dollars in antiques stores. The other thing I love about this float is that it is free-blown. This means there are no mold seams, which is usually a characteristic of older floats, though I am not certain of this float’s age. Also, there are even a few tiny bubbles in the glass! This is known as a“working float” because it was actually used by European fishermen. I know this because I found it myself on a deserted beach in the Caribbean. You can see in the photos that the float bears the marks of hard use. Too: these scuffs and scratches tell a story about this float that no words can tell, and add great character to this float. In the mid-twentieth century. Metal and plastic floats began to replace these beautiful glass floats in Europe. My best guess is that this float was made and used sometime in the years between 1915– 1955. We live on an island in Puget Sound in Washington State. And many years ago, when the salmon were bountiful, a large number of fishing boats would ply the waters off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska to seine for salmon. They would use wood fishing floats to buoy the nets, and this is one of those floats. Made of cedar, this float still retains a bit of the red paint it originally had. Nice decor item. Rich red/ cranberry color- Well defined pontil on it's end. Is hand blown glass. There are also a few small bubbles within the glass itself. No chips nor damage that I note.
