This auction is for a 1940's era vintage custom made bamboo fly rod made by Fred DeBell of Denver. Co. marked: SARATOGA SPECIAL- 77- H.T. This 9' 3 piece rod has the original extra tip, sock and tube as designed and manufactured by Fred, who was famous for his hand made custom rods using quality Phillipson and Wright& Mcgill Granger components and for their sales at local Denver sporting goods stores from the 1930's to the 1950's. This rod is fully functional and in excellent condition with no damages or repairs and appearing just very lightly used and still showing 99% of the original varnish and no chips in the cork. Purchased in the 1960's from a traditional and very rustic Paradise Valley. Montana fly fishing pro shop, this genuine Hardy Bros. Alnwick) hexagon bamboo still looks to be in near mint condition- It was purchased as used. Fished about 6x, but looks pristine with no obvious wear, which is the condition I kept it in for the last 40+ years. The rod is a 2-piece with one matching tip. The cork grip is VERY clean and shows no marks or wear. The ferrules are squeaky clean. Smooth and tight fitting, while the guides(including the brass butt guide and chrome snake intermediates) are all original with no signs of wear ... moreat all. Windings and varnish are pristine and show no wear; Comes with the original blue sock and aluminum rod tube. In excellent to mint condition. The sections are straight as an arrow, although the tip piece appears to be about ½” shorter than the butt section. One thing I can truly attest to is that this rod lays out an awesome amount of line and has the backbone to take on even the nastiest of sea run brown trout! I’ve walked this rod into a fly fishing pro shop– They examined the piece and looked it up in their“bible” estimating that with a single tip it is valued@ $700.00. Should you have any questions. This is a gorgeous split bamboo rod. I do see a couple finish imperfections on reel seat. I also noticed a couple very small imperfections on finish. All 3 pieces are equal length. The windings are perfect and so are the guides. Shows a patent of April 12.1938 and marked"made by Goodwin Granger Company Denver. There is only one tip with this rod. I have been told that they could be purchased that way. Comes with original cloth bag and slightly short aluminum rod tube.

JA Henshall Handkraft 8' vintage split bamboo fly rod
This is a vintage 8 ft. JA Henshall Handcraft split bamboo fly rod. I believe the rod was made by either Heddon or Eutis Edwards but after researching the rod I am totally confused concerning the maker. The reel seat bottom hood is stamped with"Weber Stevens Point WI. The cloth case has a tag that says"Weber" I have posted pictures showing all the guides and ferrules to help you determine condition. The rod seems to be in very good condition. The varnish is scuffed up at various spots on the rod. One cap end is missing from the metal tube. It has the number 128 on each piece, don't know what that means. Maybe a model# Walt was a true lifestyle outdoorsman. He loved to fish and hunt and he loved the places where wild game is found. Particularly in Northern California. His father E.C. Powell was a brilliant man who designed and bu ilt some wonderful rods. 1910-1930 MONTAGUE #880-1/2, 7', 4/2 Split Bamboo "Trunk" Fly Rod w/Bag, *FINE*
Up for auction a rather Nice 1910-1930 MONTAGUE CITY ROD CO. NO.880-1/2 7 FT. 4/2 SPLIT BAMBOO"TRUNK or SUITCASE" FLY ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL CLOTH BAG. These early"trunk" or"suitcase" fly rods, forerunners to what we consider"pack" rods today, were produced by the Montague City Rod Co. throughout the first quarter of the last century. This No.880-1/2 model would appear in catalogs from at least 1910 to around 1930. Produced as an unmarked"trade" rod, it would have been supplied to any number of hardware, sporting good or department/catalog stores across the country. I've added a photo of an original 1910 catalog listing from one such hardware store, Pacific Hardware& Steel Co. Built with what appears to be Calcutta cane and comes equipped with extra tip section, hardened steel snake ... moreguides& tip tops, Montague's"improved" welted ferrules, metal winding check, standard sliding band reel seat, solid sheet cork grip and wound in red silk and black& gold trim, with full intermediates. There are no less than 131 individual wraps on the five small sections. Rod is in about Fine condition, showing moderate overall wear. Bamboo remains very nice, showing a couple glue lines, but no splits or cracks. All five sections are the correct equal length of 21" Original varnish shows some thinning& unsettling in places and would benefit from a new overcoat if it's to be fished. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip tops, ferrules and winding check are in very good condition. Sheet cork grip is nice for these, showing only two very tiny spots of thinning near the seam. Reel seat still works perfectly. Put up in the original five-pocket muslin bag, which hasn't been near as lucky. Riddled with holes and some tears, it nonetheless remains serviceable, although fragile. Howells / Hartzell Bamboo Fly Rod
Here is an interesting bit of Western and Northwestern rodmaking history. Prior to 2000 a well respected west coast rod collector purchased a number of rod blanks from Gary Howells. This rod is one of those blanks. The collector commissioned rodmaker Edwin Hartzell of Portland. Oregon to finish out the rod in the Howells style sometime between 2000 and 2005. As previously noted the rod is a 7' 6" two piece for a 5wt. line. The rod has seen very light use over the years. The cane is a lovely tawny golden tone. The guide and signature wraps are brown tipped gold in the Howells style. The duronze ferrules seat fully and smoothly. The action is a smooth medium action and responds equally well with DT5 or WF5 line. For those not familiar with Edwin Hartzell he was a Portland. Oregon rodmaker from 1968 until his death in 2005. Mr. Hartzell ... morealso taught rodmaking and tutored a number of Northwest rodmakers in his time. The book"Oregon Bamboo" contains an excellent profile of Mr. Hartzell. Of course, the rod bag and tube are included as is the original stress graph Mr. Hartzell did for this rod which includes his calculations and side notes. The provenance of this rod is documented with a photo copy of a letter listing six Howells blanks finished out by Mr. Hartzell for the owner. The letter is signed by both the owner and Mr. Hartzell and is dated March 7, 2005 just twelve days before Mr. Hartzell passed on March 19 of that year. VINTAGE CUSTOM H&I USA 1-2 WEIGHT SPLIT BAMBOO FLY FISHING ROD This auction is for vintage custom refinished Horrocks Ibbotson Utica. NY two piece 7’10” split bamboo rod. There is a partial H&I decal. It was likely a Tonka Prince or Tonka Queen model of H&I rod. I would estimate it would match nicely with a one or two weight fly line based on the taper and action of the rod. The 5 ¾” cork handle and screw down lock reel seat are in great condition. There are three snake eye guides on the mid section and an agate stripper guide on the bottom section. All of the snake eye guides are new and all guides have been custom wrapped. Vintage P&K Modernist split bamboo tonkin cane fly fishing rod 9 feet long
I have for sale a hard to find and great size vintage 9 ft split bamboo fly rod with sock. Ready for fishing or collecting. Label is P&K otherwise known as Pachner and Koller out of Chicago. Rod looks like it was made by Horrocks and Ibbotson(H&I) fitted together the rod 9 feet long. Nice length for a 3 piece rod. Rod probably dates to late 1940's early 1950's. Check out the pictures! extra tip has crack in it also mid section missing eyelet. 3 section rod with spare tip.

We will tell you what we can and hope the information is helpful. Lacquered and special coated on the ends.all of this shows wear and age. The ends are damaged.somewhat brittle with splits. The pieces do fit into each other but we didn't force the ends in fully. Unsure as to whether or not these can be repaired. Rewound or reinforced.we've left things as we found them! We are not sure if this is one pole or 2 seperate poles. There are 8 pieces total. We're assuming it's 2 poles because there are 2 ends/tips.with the fishing line attached/wound around the tips. You are bidding on a very nice#47 South Bend split bamboo fly rod. I dont see any cracks or breaks in the bamboo or the metal couplers. All sections are straight and the same length. All ferrules and windings are tight on all four sections. The reel seat is excellent with all pieces intact. The cork handle is excellent.The tube is solid and shows wear but its unbroken. You can see in my photos that a sticker is missing off the side of the tube. The cloth sleeve has a#47 South Bend tag on it.This rod really looks like it wasnt used very much.Its extra clean. Vintage MONTAGUE SUNBEAM 81/2' Split Bamboo 3 Piece Fly Fishing Rod w Sock Bag
For sale is a vintage.MONTAGUE SUNBEAM split bamboo fly rod that is about 8 1/2 feet long assembled.The two sets of male/female ferrules fit together very tight. I inserted each a short distance and encountered much resistance.Probably need a good coat of wax or lubricant.I will leave that to the buyer.Only other negatives I could find are that the first[only] eye on the handle section is missing and one eye on the middle section is missing.The label on the bamboo is intact and easiily readible. The label on the handle is mostly gone. There are a few cracks in the cork handle but no missing cork pieces.The reel seat lock nut urns freely. The bag is free of any rips or tears but has normal age related dirt and darkening. I don't know if it is the original bag for the rod; it is unmarked.
