One tip is down 2 ¼” Other sections full length. It has the beginnings of alligatoring to the varnish but the finish is still functional and provides full coverage. I replaced the missing tip top. It has a replaced ferrule wrap at one of the tips, all other wraps are original. Presumed Union Hardware origin. No bag but the original wooden stiffener for the tips is included. Questions welcome. Well- a great project for a few weekends(snowy ones, if that is your pleasure) all sections straight, intact, and of equal length, perfect for a careful strip(denatured alcohol would work) as most of the wraps are in place and secure- then you keep the Granger as very original. slide band seat scripted"Granger Favorite" as is excellent(not ading) cork is unsanded with minimal ridging, butt section has all wraps, including those beautiful signature wraps in place, mid is missing two guides and wraps would need to be done, both tips are arrow straight with one tip missing one wrap and guide, ferrule fit is excellent(of ... morecourse, I would reglue the ferrules if this rod was to be fished, and it should be. Typical wear- bluing worn on the butt/seat edges and the seat ring from handling(See pictures below) There are standard marks to the wood seat from the sliding band and from a reel being seated. The tube has some minor marks/scrapes to the label and a scratch mid-way down the tube as seen in the pictures. Be sure to click the links below for many high resolution pictures. *Spectacular* 1951-1952 HEDDON No.8 9', 3/2 Split Bamboo Fly Rod With ORIGINAL
It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Absolutely Spectacular. Unused 1951-1952 HEDDON No.8"HEDDON FLY ROD" 9 FT. 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG& ORIGINAL MARKED FIBER TUBE. Fly rods in this condition rarely come up for sale on eBay and this one is, without question, the finest example of this model I've ever seen. Introduced by James Heddon's Sons in 1951, the No.8 would only sell through the 1952 season, when the Korean War Trade Embargo would effectively put an end to virtually all of Heddon's bamboo rod production. The model name was simply called the"Heddon Fly Rod" in catalogs. I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1952 edition. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten"Heddon" in straightline on one flat and"8- 9' 2-1/2F- HCH ... moreor D" on the opposite flat. The No.2-1/2 ferrule would be what Heddon termed their"Bass/Trout" action, a very versatile all-around rod. The"HCH or D" was the old line weight designation equivalent to today's modern 6 or 7 wt. lines. Built with very nice browntone Tonkin cane and comes equipped with extra tip section, Perfection guides& tip tops, serrated& welted nickel silver ferrules, nickel silver winding check, plastic grip check& butt cap, screw-locking mottled brown plastic reel seat, solid cork grip and wound in what appears to be gold& black jasper silk. Rod is in absolutely incredible, all-original unused condition. Because one tip top has been reset, resulting in just a 1/4" difference in length, I'm rating this as"Unused Extra Fine+" and let it go at that. Bamboo is perfect. All four sections are arrow-straight. Original varnish, rodshaft markings and wraps are pristine, as one would expect. All guides, tip tops, winding check and grip check are excellent. J. L. John) Weir& Son varnished 2-piece. 2-tip, 8' for a 5 weight bamboo fly rod from the late sixties/early seventies in excellent condition. Labeled M801.22.8. J. L. Weir& Son were a small Western rodmaker located in Los Gatos CA. Their output was small and seldom do these rods find their way to market. Typical of Western fly rods of the day designed to fish larger waters, this rod has a'crisper' action than similar rods from some of the prominent Eastern makers like C. F. Charles) Orvis, H. L. Hiram) Leonard, James(Jim) Payne, Everett Garrison and others. 9 snake guides with an agate'stripper' J. L. Weir& Son rods had a couple of unique and distinctive features; Wood reel seat filler finished in oil rather than varnish. This made it very easy to'freshen' as needed without refinishing the entire reel ... moreseat. The Sterling silver hook-keeper is actually embedded in the front of the cork grip. This spares the windings and bamboo from any damage and also provides a'resting' place for your dry fly without crushing the hackles against the bamboo as with more traditional hook-keepers. The rod bag is heavy denim to protect this fine rod. A gorgeous rod with very light wheat colored shafts, brown silk guide wraps tipped black at grip, ferrules, tips(1 tip has two wraps of black and the other only 1, this allows differentiating so tips can be switched from time-to-time) The varnish is perfect. The ferrules are nickel silver. I believe the butt cap, reel seat hardware and grip-check are aluminum. The butt-cap is labeled WEIR& SON. This rod is a 3 pc. one tip 9 ft. rod which. From the feel of it, is a 5/6wt. all three sections are the same length, and the cane is in good condition(though the tip has a slight set) This rod has no maker's mark, but I believe(from the shadow left when the decal was removed) that it is Montague cane made for Spiegel back in the days when Spiegel mail-ordered fishing tackle. The mid female ferrule has a crack at the base-if I were doing the refinish, I would either replace all the ferrules, or wrap the cracked area tightly with C or D white nylon(not silk) and varnish: white nylon without color preserver becomes almost transparent when varnished, and shrinks; finished thusly, the ferrule will give at least 3 or 4 more years of service before requiring replacement. The only markings on this rod are: 8'6" 5wt. and the number 13211 on all three sections. It is a 3 pc. one tip rod. And all three sections are the same length, and when assembled it is slightly less than eight and a half feet long. Even though this rod has no maker's mark on it, I believe it is an Uslan kit rod from the late forties, before Louis Feierabend came on board-it sports the hardware Uslan rods wore before Nat began using Super Z ferrules, and its action is identical to a marked two piece Nat Uslan rod in my collection. I've fished with this rod(as I do with all the rods in my collection) and can affirm that it will throw a five-weight line into the middle of next week, and will handle a 4 1/2 pound hen steelhead with no difficulty. This is a vintage jay harvey"XID LINCOLN" PENTAGONAL(5 sided) bamboo fly fishing rod. I don't know too much about rods. But I'll do my best to describe condition. It has 4 pieces, bottom, center, and two end pieces. One of the end pieces is missing its metal(or steel) male end piece as shown in the pictures. I purchased a few vintage fishing rods from an estate sale in chester county, pa(about 30-40 miles west of Philadelphia) I believe this rod is all original, shows various degrees of wear, but not too bad. The bottom piece measure 34 inches and is hand written in a yellowish paint, JAY HARVEY.XID.LINCOLN. THE CENTER PIECE IS 34.5" long, and the third piece with its male metal piece intact measures 33" The 4th piece(also and end) measures 32.5" presumably because the metal piece is not present. Windings are frayed, the rod is missing one guide and likely a section or 2 that would convert to fly rod length, the 2 sections provided are very straight and free of cracking. Cork handle displays light wear. Handle flips around for fly rod use, however as said, with only the 2 sections provided, you end up with 5'6" worth of rod. 1930's Cross/Wes Jordan-Era South Bend Bamboo Fly Rod - 9 ft w 2 tips
Offered for auction is an excellent original 1930's Cross/Wes Jordan Era South Bend bamboo fly rod. 9 ft, with two tips(3/2) It was produced during the early period when Wes Jordan supervised rod production, including the double and single-built Cross rods, as well as the full line of South Bend models. Although the model number of the rod offered is not certain, it exhibits all the characteristics of the top-of-the-line models from the 1930's(such as models 30& 31) including hand-welted chrome plated nickel silver ferrules, stainless steel snake guides& tip top, and chrome plated nickel silver stripping guide. It also has the hardy-style"Threadlock" reel seat with black bakelite/tenite barrel and knurled lock nut, which was used only on South Bend's top models. Varnish is original. Polished. Guides and wraps ... moreare original. Original wraps were renewed with very light coat of spar varnish. All rod sections are full length and straight, including the two full-length tips. The cane is light, smooth and evenly colored. Ferules fit tight and pop when pulled apart. Reel seat is in excellent condition with rich black barrel, and knurled locking nut and cork check. Cork grip is only slightly darkened from age, clean and smooth. Rod has a powerful medium-full action. Some say semi-parabolic. It is very smooth casting with a#7 line, and would be an excellent light Atlantic Salmon, Steelhead or Sea-Run Trout rod. It is light enough to be comfortable to use, but has the power to deliver long casts, and handle larger fish. Rod comes with vintage cloth bag which may be original. In good condition. The 1940’s early 1950’s Tonkin Cane Fly Rod features 3 bamboo sections with extra tippet with both tippets slightly shorter than butt and mid sections. Tight wraps on both line guides and ferrules, hook keeper eyelet, nicely aged cork handle, black marbleized composite reel seat, nice red HI diamond logo decal and“Governor” embossed in yellow script adjacent to decal. Cosmetically, the finish is great in shape with just the minor scuffs and scraps from general use, the fiber tube is excellent and the sock is in nice shape and includes approximately 65% of the original Horrocks Ithaca paper decal for a 9’ No. 2324 rod. Estate sale find from Down East Swansboro North Carolina. Super Old Antique Bamboo Can Rod. I don't know much about these antiques but will describe what I see. This one has a red insert in the first large eyelet. All of the smaller eyelets swing and fold down. This is a four piece set with 2 end tips of slightly different lengths. Length is approx 88 inches total It has a star label on the handle with letters see pic#1 I do not see any condition issues to describe. Rod seems to be very old and very well made. WOW! Super Old Bamboo fly rod. 4) Rod set with a broken extra tip which does not seem to be part of the set as the bamboo is different. Must be something the original ower left in for parts. I'm not knowledgeable about Bamboo fly rods. But here is what I see. Fixed eyelets. I'm thinking 2 different length ends, No identification that I can see. Everything seems to be there with one eyelet having some of the red strands loose. Seems to be old as the hills. Length is a little over 100 inches. Don't know a lot about this fly rod was found at a old house in the garage by the Little Red River here in Arkansas. Has these letter's and number on it: 9' 2 1/2 F. HCH or D and on the other side has Heddon. The reel seat locking nut is stamped"PAT. No. 1624052. It's a 4 piece set with a old looking cloth sleeve carry case that looks to be rough. NOTE:The rod itself looks to be in good condition for the age. Just has one eye that came loose as shown in the pictures. Sorry for any Camera Glare in pictures. A piece of tape over thread at eyelet on butt section, doesn't twist or anything so could be just replace or hold thread down? but overall in very good shape.
