Rare: Authentic, Signed "Edwards" Eustis W. Edwards Bamboo Fly Rod 1928
RARE: Bamboo Fly Rod Made by Eustis W. Edwards E.W. Edwards bamboo fly rod 1928. With"Edwards" signature, 3 sections, Mt. Carmel" model. This vintage rod is 3/1 for a 6 weight line and the original total length was 9 feet long. The butt and mid section are full size and equal at 38 inches long. The tip is short at 29.5 inches. Even though it is short, the rod casts beautifully. All of the metal fittings: ferrules. Reel seat, guides, hookkeeper are original. The varnish shows wear, but has retained a beautiful reddish brown patina. The wraps are the original orange jasper silk. The reel seat shows some wear with small dings where the reel foot met the seat. The cork is in good condition although it shows soiling from years of use. I could have cleaned it, but decided to leave it alone! Regarding the signature"Edwards" ... morePatrick Garner's authoritative book. Playing with Fire. The Life and Fly Rods of E.W. Edwards is most helpful for dating and authenticating the signature. Patrick is the leading expert on E. W. Edwards bamboo fly rods. I asked him if this is indeed Eustis Edwards' signature and he wrote to me: I'd wager that the signature itself is by Edwards. Not one of his sons; nice, bold signature. Your dating for the rod seems accurate. And a second message in our discussion: Yes. I think Eustis W. Edwards signed this one. It looks to be an immediate post-Winchester rod. He started making the Mt Carmel about a year before he moved from Filbert St. The rod comes in an original Edwards canvas bag with the Edwards marking in bold black letters. It is 95% intact with some staining of the label, I love the instructions on the back of how to care for the rod. The copyright is 1930. The screw top is missing. Orvis Madison Bamboo Fly Rod and Orvis Vortex VO2 III Reel
I bought this rod and two others from Mike Clark at South Creek Ltd. in Lyons Colorado when I found out that the waiting list for his custom made rods was between 5-6 years. Mike had bought these from a collector and personally inspected them before selling them. Since I bought all three he gave me a great deal at $500 each. I then spent a couple hundred more on reels. I have two more up for auction as well. This auction if for an Orvis Madison bamboo fly rod serial#66219. 7 1/2 foot, 6- 7/8, rated as a HDG(6) According to the Orvis Database this was made in 1972. Included with the rod is an Orvis Vortex VO2 III reel and spare spool. There are holsters for both the reel and spare spool and the rod has the original tube and rod sock. As per the Antique Rod& Reels Orvis bamboo rod database, the rod was built in 1966 by Master builders George Reid& Bill Young. Although designated by Orvis as an HCH(7) wt, as is traditional with Orvis bamboo fly rods, the line designation is overstated. This rod casts powerfully and delicately with a line weights 5DT, 6WF, and 6DT, and weighs in at 5- 1/8. Even though this rod is from the mid 1960’s, as one can see by the pictures, the rod is in near new condition. Ferrule blue is 99-100% reel seat shows little use, ... moreand the grip has extremely light soiling. All guides are securely wrapped and the varnish on the wrappings is perfect. The rod comes with it's original tube. Grey rod bag, and warranty registration card. The tube shows storage marks, but is still in excellent condition, with the original uncompromised blue, white& gold paper label. Orvis 3/2 rods are uncommon and are eagerly sought after, as they are wonderful casting instruments. It can be used as a three piece 9’ fly rod or a two piece 6’ casting rod. There are no Montague decals however it is all the characteristic of a Splitswitch. John Pickard Perfectionist bamboo fly rod
This is John's rendition of the famous Paul Young Perfectionist. This rod comes in 2/2 configuration with very nicely flamed cane. Reel seat is full cork with sliding band and wraps are burgundy. This is the 5 weight which has the power to throw larger flies in windier conditions. I bought this rod new from John. Aside from some cork soiling. It's in excellent condition. I will offer this rod with a return option, but I don't think you'll want to return it. I've added a few more photos. The bluing on the guides and ferrules looks almost new, I couldn't find blemishes. I could not find a nick in the varnish. All sections are arrow straight. This is an extremely nice rod for small to medium streams. H & I "Cascade" Vintage 9' 3/1 split Bamboo Fly Rod- Re-furbished
This Horrocks& Ibbotson"Cascade" was probably built in the 1940's& 50's. I bought this rod a few years ago and. Last year I stripped it down to a bare"stick" added a new reel seat, cork grip, 3 coats of"Epifanes" Varnish, re-wrapped all the guides. The rod has been fished once. I prefer a much shorter and lighter rod& decided to see if anyone on Ebay can use a"new" looking vintage rod. I have used a 6 weight line on this rod and can report that the rod works pretty well. This is a"slow" rod. The parabolic action is slow like many of these rods from the 40's& 50's. For wet or streamer fishing. This one might fill the bill. And, when you're not using it, it'll look nice on the wall.

This is a vintage Montague Fly? fishing rod/pole. It has 2 different tips, one is heavier than the other. The heavier one has a small crack at the base where it slides onto the other piece of the pole. I do not know if it could be fixed? The pole is in very good condition but there are a few areas that have darks spots that the laquer has lifted from age. It still has all the original eyes and green string plus the original hallmark and cork bottom and those parts are in excellent condition. It doesn't look like it was used very much. The bag looks like somebody made it for it. Each piece of the pole is approx. 36 1/2" long. Please see all of the pictures they say more than I can with words. They are part of my description! Up for auction is a beautiful vintage 3 piece Heddon fly fishing rod. Has a great vintage look. It measures about 101" inches or 8' ft 5" inches long when assembled. The rod is made out of split bamboo with a cork handle(both of which. Are in great condition) At the base of the rod, next to the handle, is written" Heddon#13" This lot includes a three piece fly rod. A cloth sleeve( to protect the rod inside the case) and an aluminum tube hard case. The aluminum case measures about 39" inches by 1 5/8" inches. The case is in good condition with some wear and is most likely the reason the rod is in such nice condition after all these years. This Auction is for a Rage Vintage Pezon& Michel Ritz-Vendome Bamboo Fly Rod that measure 87.5" long and can break down into 2 pieces. I know nothing about fly fishing or fly fishing gear. It is USED and shows some wear. Please look at the auction pictures. The bamboo, clear coat and threading on eyelets look really good. There is some surface rust on some of the eyelets. One eyelet is attached to the rod, but broken, see pic. This is all original. Aluminum base is stamped with"Pezon& Michel Paris Amboise" There a 3 pieces, the base and 2 tip extensions, one is stamped with a"F" and one is stamped with a"2" if I am reading it correctly. The writing on the Base Piece reads: Ritz- Vendome#P HS/HL 7' 2" 3 7/16 oz Specially Made For Norm Thompson" Here is some history that I have found ... morewhile researching on the internet: This rod was sold through a fly fishing tackle retailer in Portland. Oregon called Norm Thompson in the 1960's. Norm Thompson was the exclusive Seller of Pezon& Michel rods in the U.S. at the time. The gentleman that designed the rods for the company was Charles Ritz, he was the owner of the world famous Ritz hotels. Charles Ritz built these rods on a progressive power taper and they cast a 5 wt. line. When they sold in the sixties for about 120.00 dollars. More pictures can be provided upon request. For your consideration is a Vintage Horrocks Ibbotson Split Bamboo 1 Piece Fly Fishing Rod. The rod itself is in good condition. Noticed at least one loose winding and a couple of loose bands. One band is missing. Noticed no large nicks or chips in the wood. There are a few blemishes and the trout logo is partially worn off. Ferrules show age related wear. The cork handle looks complete with no major chunks missing. There is some cracking and indicated wear. The cloth carry bag has some holes. Staining and discoloration. MYSTERIOUS PAUL H YOUNG BAMBOO FLY ROD 7 ½’ This is a factory-made rod marked“Paul H Young 7 ½’ 1-F 3 ½ oz. It has one tip. Which is about 1” short and apparently re-set from the ferrule end. The cane work. Wrap color, handwriting, reel seat, and grip shape are unlike any other Paul Young rod I have ever seen or owned. After looking at written sources and consulting(electronically) with Young experts. The most likely explanation is that the rod was sold through the Young shop but made on cane provided by South Bend or another firm. The Featherlight brand reel seat was used on the Young“Utility” grade rods. And the ferrules are NS hand-welted pieces similar to other Young ferrules. The guide wraps on the butt have the Winston-style double wraps on the inner edges. Stripper is Perfection. And snakes are blued steel. This rod ... morecame from an estate that included four other bamboo fly rods and several reels all from the 1950s and 1960s. All of the other items in the collection were completely correct. Despite all the controversy. This is a nice rod to cast with a 5wt or 6wt and it is ready to fish. I have disclosed my concerns about the rod and I cannot guarantee anything about its origin. Excellent condition Orvis Battenkill cane fly rod. the rod is 7 1/2 ft and designed for a 6wt line(though I used it with a 5 wt and it casted just fine) The rod has been well taken care of and it has no chips scratches or other defects. It is 2 piece and both are straight with no set whatsoever. The cork on the handle is in excellent condition(almost looks new) and the ferrules. Rod guides and windings are in great shape. The colors used blend very well together. The Leonard Baby Catskill taper was planed from the Presidential Taper list according to the Gould's Tips& Tapers. SOUTH BEND 24-9 SPLIT BAMBOO FLY FISHING ROD 3/2 with Original BAG
South Bend 24-9 Bamboo Fly Rod. 9' 3 piece 2 tips. Model 24, 9ft) Rated for line HCH or C which equates to a 7 weight line today. I've lawn cast this with 6 and it felt good. It will cast a 5 weight line as well but did feel a little under lined. If you like a fast rod you may actually like it with a 5wt more. All sections are straight and full length. It comes with the original bag but no tube. I'll ship it in a PVC tube. It's in fishable condition as it is with one of the tips. But it does have a couple small issues. One tiptop eye on one of the tip sections was replaced but needs to be replaced again because it had been broken(the bamboo is NOT broken or looks damaged- just the tip top eye) See Pictures. The varnish on the mid section could stand to be stripped and redone. Someone had replaced the snake guide and looks ... morelike they tried to re-varnish that section and didn't let it dry completely or something. See Pictures. This was an estate sale find, and I am not much of a fisherman, so I'm afraid not too much is known about this rod and reel. VINTAGE CUSTOM RIVER SPLIT BAMBOO FLY FISHING ROD This auction is for a vintage custom three piece 8’10” split bamboo fly rod. There are no manufacturer identifications however it does have characteristics of a Horrocks Ibbotson rod. The tip section measure 37” Mid is 37 ¼” and the tip section is 34” I would estimate the fly line weight at a 6-7. The 5 ¾” cork handle and screw down lock reel seat are in good functional condition. There are a total of six guides. Two on each section and a hook keeper. All of the guides have been custom wrapped. There are two small dents(see picture) in the female ferrule on the bottom section however the mid section male ferrule fits securely and will not affect the casting or use of the rod. The brownstone colored bamboo cane and varnish finish are excellent. This would be a great rod for river ... moretrout fishing with large flies/streamers and bass fishing. Made by Heddon for Sears Roebuck in the late 1940's. This is an 8 1/2' three piece, two tip rod marked with the 2F trout action ferrule for HDH or E lines(modern 5 or 6 weight line depending on length of casts and casting style) All sections are original full length. Cork grip is clean although lightly ridged. Varnish is hard and glossy with some scratches. The butt ferrule and stripping guide have been professionally rewrapped, with an excellent color match. Please enlarge the photos. The japanned nickel silver ferrules are tight to the cane and fit snugly with no clicking. But do not pop when disjointed. Both tips have a slight set ... morethat doesn't affect the smooth, medium-fast(for bamboo) full flexing action. According to the outstanding Heddon book by Michael Sinclair, the No. 115 Premier was made with Heddon No. 20 Bill Stanley Special high grade cane although it has one less guide and a less expensive reel seat to keep the cost within the parameters specified by Sears. Comes with the original partitioned Heddon labeled bag(taped on the bottom over a hole) and aluminum tube with the Heddon bath plug caps. Missing it's label. Vintage SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD (No Name, 121" Long) in 'SWEETHEART ALUM. CASE
Offered up for bids is this Vintage SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD(No Name. 121" Long) in'SWEETHEART ALUM. CASE. This 3 pc.rod came in this case, but I am not sure if this rod goes with this case. The eyes& the wrappings all appear original. The bottom 2 sections need refinished, I can't find any cracks. The top section is cracked part way down from the tip. It was taped part way down. I removed part of the tape, but left the tape on for about 8" The bottom section is 43" long& the other 2 sections are 39" long, so I am not sure how long it should be when put together. I am pretty sure this rod can be made to look very nice. I can see a place just above the handle that appears to have had a decal, but it is not there.
