Framed print from North American Aviation where my grandfather worked in the 40s thru 70s as an experimental mechanic. At the end of World War II. The US Navy felt the need to acquire a nuclear strike capability to maintain its political influence. In the short term, carrier-based aircraft were the ideal solution. Nuclear munitions at that time were bulky and required a large aircraft to carry them. The Navy improvised a carrier-based nuclear strike plane by modifying the twin-prop ocean patrol aircraft for carrier takeoff using jet assisted takeoff(JATO) rocket boosters. With initial takeoff tests in 1948. But the Neptune couldn't land on a carrier, so the crew either had to make their way to a friendly land base after a strike, or ditch in the sea near a US Navy vessel. The AJ Savage was a large composite-powered carrier-borne Attack ... moreBomber designed to deliver. It also performed photo reconnaissance duties and later on was used as an aerial refueling platform. The North American AJ-1/2 and AJ-1/2P Savage aircraft were in a number of Heavy Attack Composite squadrons from 1948–1956. As well as in several Photographic Reconnaissance squadrons. The Heavy Attack versions were the first nuclear bomb carrying bombers able to be launched from and recovered on aircraft carriers. The date of its design inception was a time where the US Navy was faced with procuring the nascent jet engine. While still having to rely upon the simple yet well proven reciprocating engine. Jets at this time were unreliable and used large quantities of fuel; however, once they were developed, they produced performance that no piston engine could ever provide. A compromise was made to include in the Savage two piston engines. With a large turbocharger fitted inside each engine nacelle. Vtg WW2 US Army Air Force B-3 Leather Bomber Pilot Jacket Sheepskin Size 40 Nice
This is the first item I am offering from a collection I picked up recently that belonged to a retired Air Force Colonel. Up for auction is an early 1940s B-3 bomber jacket. I believe it is in pretty remarkable condition considering its vintage and use. There are obvious signs of wear to the jacket and sheepskin lining(e.g. loss of leather. Fraying to cuffs, etc. but overall it still presents very nicely. I do not note any holes to the leather, just some spots where it has flaked off. Some shearling discoloration, as would be expected. Working Talon zipper, but I would recommend zipping and unzipping very carefully. I've zipped and unzipped it a couple of times, but it feels like it may"snag" at some point. Straps and buckles are in real nice shape. Army Air Force insignia is on left shoulder. Size 40 stated, with approximate ... moremeasurements of 21 inches pit to pit, 29 inches back collar to waist and 18 inches pit to cuff. I think this would be ideal for a static display piece for WW2 memorabilia. Wearing it might not be the best option, considering the fragile nature of these old, rare beauties. Great opportunity to snare one of these real deal classics. This jacket is attributed to USAF Col(Ret) Reo Trail. Col Trail began his career in the early 1940s as a Staff Sergeant Pilot with the 16th Squadron, 64th Group flying C-47s. From some basic research, I believe this squadron was involved early in the war in England/Europe, then shifted their operations to the Mediterranean and the North African campaign. While still a Staff Sergeant Pilot, Col Trail penned"Ode To A C-47" which was officially published in the Stars& Stripes Newspaper(it can be googled easily) in the spring of 1943. Col Trail eventually rose to the rank of full bird colonel and also served tours in Korea and Vietnam. Vtg WW2 US Army Air Force A-3 Aero Leather Bomber Pilot Pants Sheepskin Sz 38R
This is the third item I am offering from a collection I picked up recently that belonged to a retired Air Force Colonel. Up for auction is a pair of early 1940s A-3 bomber pants that went with the B-3 bomber jacket that is currently listed. There are obvious signs of wear to these pants and sheepskin lining(e.g. loss of leather. Holes/tears in several areas, etc. but overall it still presents well. The sheepskin actually appears in pretty nice, clean shape where it is not torn. Working Conmar zippers going down front and sides, but the two pulls at the bottom of each leg are Talons. Suspenders, straps and buckles are in real nice shape. These pants were made by Aero Leather Clo. Size 38R indicated on label. I think this would be ideal for a static display piece for WW2 memorabilia. Wouldn't advise wearing these, in light of the damage ... morealready sustained and they are pretty fragile. Please check out photos carefully to ensure that these are for you. I have not altered them in any way. Great opportunity to snare one of these real deal classics. These pants are attributed to USAF Col(Ret) Reo Trail. Col Trail began his career in the early 1940s as a Staff Sergeant Pilot with the 16th Squadron, 64th Group flying C-47s. From some basic research, I believe this squadron was involved early in the war in England/Europe, then shifted their operations to the Mediterranean and the North African campaign. While still a Staff Sergeant Pilot, Col Trail penned"Ode To A C-47" which was officially published in the Stars& Stripes Newspaper(it can be googled easily) in the spring of 1943. Col Trail eventually rose to the rank of full bird colonel and also served tours in Korea and Vietnam. The label in the jacket it is a G-1 BRILL BROS INC MIL-J-7823C(WEP) 1962 the heavy duty con zipper and the stamped U S N on the wind flap are of that time, In very good condition for age. Has a small"USN" punched into the inside flap. It does not have any patches.This is for protection if the pilot becomes POW. Leather and wool are in good conditon. The inside lining is in excellent shape.The zipper works great and has the original leather puller on it.
