Vintage Fishing Montague Fly Rod & Reel 9 Feet 4 Inches Long With Cloth Case
Up for auction is a vintage Montague Redwing 9 foot 4 inch fly rod from the 50s or early 60s. It is in a canvas case that has a tear in it about 2 1/2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. The pole comes in 3 pieces with an extra 3rd piece as shown in pictures 1.5,6, and 7. I know nothing about fishing poles so I took this one to a sporting goods store and was advised that it is a very old pole in very good condition. There is nothing broken on the pole and all of the parts are there. The adjustment screw for the drag(whatever that is) is missing on the reel. He said that many of these poles were produced in the 50s and 60s and they aren't particularly rare, except this one, although its been used,is in great condition. He also said that many times the tips break off the pole. I started shaping the masts into what would ultimately become what I believe to be the wor l d's largest 3 piece wooden f unctioning fly rod and reel. I spent 9 months hand crafting th e rod and reel. I hand fab ri cated the copper ferr ul es. The steel snake guides. The stainless ste el reel seat. The African W enge wood reel and genuine cork han dle. I machined the brass for the frame of the reel. All to create a realist ic ver sion of a 19th century English fly rod and reel. The Wenge wood for the reel was used beca use it closely resembled the black walnut they used for the English ... morereels. The Douglas Fir po le resembles t he green hart wood of the English fly rods. The handles for the reel are made of marble which represents the agate han dles of the perio d. The p ole and reel have been aged and weathered to emulate the wear that an old rod w ould have. As t ime goes on. It will only get better. The length is 38 fee t long. It is a 3 p iece rod that comes a part just like a real fishing pole into approximat e l y 3. 13 foot long sections. I realize s that to scale. There s hould be one more section. Up for bid one Vintage STAR Reverse S-Handle Brass Fly Reel w/2:1 Multiplier- unmarked as to manufacturer. But identified as being manufactured by the STAR REEL WORKS, Birmingham, Ct. through online articles identifying the patented foot design, reverse S-handle, and simple handle knob. The article actually showed this identical model reel. This reel is constructed of brass with raised pillars. There is a clicker controlled by a slide button on the rear plate. It is in good working condition. The reverse S-handle has a wood knob. There are no screws used to assemble this reel except two for the front cover and one for the handle, all other fastening is through peened tabs. Overall it is in good condition. There is a small rectangular opening in the rim of the front cover(see photos) There is nothing under the cover other than the gears for ... morespeed multiplication and no signs that there was ever any thing else. So why the opening is a mystery. Perhaps it was used because of a stock shortage in plain covers. It measures 1-15/16" diameter. 2-3/4" deep including the handle, and has a foot measuring 2-7/16" long by 9/16" wide. It weighs 5.3 ounces, with packaging it will ship at 10 ounces. N(space for clover leaf) Y. TRADE MARK" This is a very early JVH reel when he used a clover leaf trade mark between N.Y. The clover leaf is not visible to my eye. But the N and Y and TRADE MARK words are clear, but faint. This reel has a hard rubber front and rear body plates, the metal parts are German Silver. The handle knob appears to be hard rubber. There is a clicker full time. It is in good working condition and good overall condition. There are no cracks. Old Antique Hendryx Fly Fishing Reel, 1916 - 18? Patent Dates, Working
Here's an interesting old or antique fishing reel with markings"Hendryx" and there are some patent dates that are very hard to read. Best guess is they seem to end in"16 and"18" so probably 1916 and 1918. It seems to be in good working condition and there are two buttons that seem to operate properly. The reel seems to be good overall with slight signs of use and age. It could use some light cleanup and a little polishing. It is somewhat hefty or heavy for it's size. The end caps are about 2.5 inches in diameter and the reel is about body is about 2.5 inches wide to lend a little scale to the pictures. New Haven, Ct. had been manufacturing bird cages and other wire products for over a decade by ... morethe time it first advertised its fishing reels in 1887.
