Up for auction is a vintage Montague Redwing 9 foot 4 inch fly rod from the 50s or early 60s. It is in a canvas case that has a tear in it about 2 1/2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. The pole comes in 3 pieces with an extra 3rd piece as shown in pictures 1.5,6, and 7. I know nothing about fishing poles so I took this one to a sporting goods store and was advised that it is a very old pole in very good condition. There is nothing broken on the pole and all of the parts are there. The adjustment screw for the drag(whatever that is) is missing on the reel. He said that many of these poles were produced in the 50s and 60s and they aren't particularly rare, except this one, although its been used,is in great condition. He also said that many times the tips break off the pole. Vintage Japanese fly rod Swan 9 ft original box & equipment
Vintage fly fishing rod made in Japan in original book with equipment in compartments. Label says: Central Fishing Tackle/ Swan/ Made in Japan. There are 5 pieces of rod. All in very good condition, made probably of bamboo. Each piece approximately 3 feet long. Longest combination giving 9 feet long rod. Only area you can notice it was used is cork handle. There is some wear. Little bit of rust and metal handle lining has one fissure. But it's not any loose or anything. I was told is multipurpose tool. You can change handle fitting for spinning, but I'm not specialist. Assembling areas are very stabile. They not falling apart once set. Box size approximately 34x3x2.5 inches. One side has two slide covers with compartments which contain hooks. Several flies, line, scissors and others. Some has Japanese labels. I thinks they all might ... morebe from original set, but I'm not sure. Generally really interesting item. I would it use myself, but I do rock fishing. Thanks for your interest. Just in time for fishing season. Up for bid is a used Powell TIMAX 9' 9weight 4 piece graphite fly rod. Model number: 909-4. It has been used very little. The cork grip is almost new clean. I can't find any scratches on the rod. The original rod sack and tube will accompany this fine fly rod. The fabric of the case has a torn/ missing piece measuring aprox. 2" x 3/8" which I have tried to show in the photo section) Everything else is wonderful, ready to fish, and should give its new owner years of fine service. Beautiful custom made 8 weight 4 piece 9' graphite fly rod. This fine rod was fished once on a steelhead weekend in Northeastern Ohio. It looks new. I can't find any scratches nor marks on the rod. It was crafted on a Sevier Mfg. root beer colored blank that displays(spiral) tiger eye figuring when shown in sunlight. The wraps are dark chocolate brown with medium blue. Metallic accents. The guides,double locking reel seat, and hook keeper are Pacific Bay. The reel seat is aluminum with a titanium finish. The cork grip is full wells. This medium fast fly rod sports a detachable fighting butt and end cap. All of these components are salt water ready. The inscriptions are in silver ink and read: 9'0" 8 WT. I started shaping the masts into what would ultimately become what I believe to be the wor l d's largest 3 piece wooden f unctioning fly rod and reel. I spent 9 months hand crafting th e rod and reel. I hand fab ri cated the copper ferr ul es. The steel snake guides. The stainless ste el reel seat. The African W enge wood reel and genuine cork han dle. I machined the brass for the frame of the reel. All to create a realist ic ver sion of a 19th century English fly rod and reel. The Wenge wood for the reel was used beca use it closely resembled the black walnut they used for the English ... morereels. The Douglas Fir po le resembles t he green hart wood of the English fly rods. The handles for the reel are made of marble which represents the agate han dles of the perio d. The p ole and reel have been aged and weathered to emulate the wear that an old rod w ould have. As t ime goes on. It will only get better. The length is 38 fee t long. Up for auction a rather Nice 1910-1930 MONTAGUE CITY ROD CO. NO.880-1/2 7 FT. 4/2 SPLIT BAMBOO"TRUNK or SUITCASE" FLY ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL CLOTH BAG. These early"trunk" or"suitcase" fly rods, forerunners to what we consider"pack" rods today, were produced by the Montague City Rod Co. throughout the first quarter of the last century. This No.880-1/2 model would appear in catalogs from at least 1910 to around 1930. Produced as an unmarked"trade" rod, it would have been supplied to any number of hardware, sporting good or department/catalog stores across the country. I've added a photo of an original 1910 catalog listing from one such hardware store, Pacific Hardware& Steel Co. Built with what appears to be Calcutta cane and comes equipped with extra tip section, hardened steel snake ... moreguides& tip tops, Montague's"improved" welted ferrules, metal winding check, standard sliding band reel seat, solid sheet cork grip and wound in red silk and black& gold trim, with full intermediates. There are no less than 131 individual wraps on the five small sections. Rod is in about Fine condition, showing moderate overall wear. Bamboo remains very nice, showing a couple glue lines, but no splits or cracks. All five sections are the correct equal length of 21" Original varnish shows some thinning& unsettling in places and would benefit from a new overcoat if it's to be fished. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip tops, ferrules and winding check are in very good condition. Sheet cork grip is nice for these, showing only two very tiny spots of thinning near the seam. Reel seat still works perfectly. Put up in the original five-pocket muslin bag, which hasn't been near as lucky. Riddled with holes and some tears, it nonetheless remains serviceable, although fragile. Howells / Hartzell Bamboo Fly Rod
Here is an interesting bit of Western and Northwestern rodmaking history. Prior to 2000 a well respected west coast rod collector purchased a number of rod blanks from Gary Howells. This rod is one of those blanks. The collector commissioned rodmaker Edwin Hartzell of Portland. Oregon to finish out the rod in the Howells style sometime between 2000 and 2005. As previously noted the rod is a 7' 6" two piece for a 5wt. line. The rod has seen very light use over the years. The cane is a lovely tawny golden tone. The guide and signature wraps are brown tipped gold in the Howells style. The duronze ferrules seat fully and smoothly. The action is a smooth medium action and responds equally well with DT5 or WF5 line. For those not familiar with Edwin Hartzell he was a Portland. Oregon rodmaker from 1968 until his death in 2005. Mr. Hartzell ... morealso taught rodmaking and tutored a number of Northwest rodmakers in his time. The book"Oregon Bamboo" contains an excellent profile of Mr. Hartzell. Of course, the rod bag and tube are included as is the original stress graph Mr. Hartzell did for this rod which includes his calculations and side notes. The provenance of this rod is documented with a photo copy of a letter listing six Howells blanks finished out by Mr. Hartzell for the owner. The letter is signed by both the owner and Mr. Hartzell and is dated March 7, 2005 just twelve days before Mr. Hartzell passed on March 19 of that year. 9'0" 8wt 4pc Dan Craft FT. An absolute rocket of a rod. Too much really for the fishing I do. It's an ultra-fast action powerhouse capable of throwing line into the next time zone. I would consider it more of a 9/10 weight, but that's me. The finish on this isn't particularly good by my standards, but it's not something you'd notice unless you're looking closely- some waviness in the label area(no label) Grip is larger than standard as it was for a trip with a friend of mine who is 6'10" 325# Shipping $20 USPS Priority within the US. 1 Vntg. Pflueger Fly Fishing Reel n 1 Montague Rod Trolling Pole Stainless Line
One" Antique Salmon or Trout or Ocean Pflueger Reel. and" One"True Temper Trolling Rod. Is for sale in this auction. Not the smaller reel that is used for size comparing. I included a smaller reel in the picture so to compare the size next to the large reel. Instead of using a dollar bill or a quarter or a pop can. It is not included in the auction and is not for sale. This auction is for one large rod and one large reel. It is Marked on the Reel and it was Made in Akron Ohio. Montague Sixty Five Rod.Made in the USA But unable to read it.It is worn off. I think these are old hand held trolling set ups. About 71 inches long total. Comes apart like it was not used much or stored very well. Reel has the very costly Stainless Steel Wire Line, Good for trolling or Ocean fishing. I don't know what pound test the wire line is.But ... morelooks very strong and in very good shape. Reel is marked No. 1558 Made in the USA. It is 5.5 inches wide and about a inch and 3/4 thick.Plus the hand crank and the drag knob,Then it could be 3 inches wide. Reel looks like a giant Fly reel. Line guides look very good, One line guide has minor string damage as in the pictures.But is on solid,and ready to use. Tip has its own little line spool. Rod and reel are both heavy and heavy duty. Sold as such and as described. Look very good with the enlarged pictures to see the condition. A regular antique reel was added to the picture for size comparison. The small reel is not included.
