A Carter & Co London Vintage Alloy Salmon Reel J W Young Hardy Perfect Type Fly
This is a vintage salmon fly reel made by J W Young for A. Carter& Co Ltd of 11 South Molton Street. London. I believe this reel would have been made prior to WW2, in the 1920's or 1930's. It weighs 10 ounces, and is 3.5 inches in diameter and 2 inches wide(excluding the handle) The brass foot is 3 1/8 inches long, and has not been altered. As to condition, the pictures tell the story. The reel retains much of its original leaded alloy finish. The gear teeth and pawl are sharp and show little signs of use. The drag adjustment knob works smoothly. The spindle is in excellent condition and there is no spindle play or bearing slop. The spool turns very smoothly. The ivorine handle is in fine condition and spins freely. The spool retaining screw is in excellent condition. There are no material dings or rash, except in the 4th picture, ... moreon the right side of the picture at about the 2 o'clock position, is a small(1/4 inch) area of roughness on the outer rim of the reel. Mechanically, the reel works perfectly. These J W Young made reels are getting to be quite hard to find, especially in this condition, and this larger size is relatively rare. I believe that this reel was acquired by my father or grandfather when new(they fished for salmon every summer in Scotland in the mid-1930's) and then not used much if at all. The reel has been unused and in storage for at least the last 40 years. I have way too many fly reels that I don't use, and so I am thinning the herd. I am starting this auction at what I believe is a very fair price. I accept only Paypal. I ship only to Continental USA addresses, unless other arrangements are agreed to prior to the end of the auction. Shipping to anywhere in the Continetal USA is a flat fee of $5.00, or the item may be picked up at my NYC location free of charge. Here we have a lightly used Hardy of Alnwick England Cascapedia MkII# 8/9 Classic Fly Reel. Ideal for sea trout or light salmon fishing the reel will balance rods to 14 foot. This is a RHW reel and comes fitted with 150 yards of dacron backing. The reel has been used and shows light signs of wear and a few scratches to the polished rims. All in 100% full working order. This is a Hardy"The Perfect" 3 1/8" reel with an extra spool purchased by my father in the late 70's or early 80's. It has caught many Idaho trout. It is weathered with normal use wear and tear and is also still completely functional. So. Hardy Perfection Glass Fly Rod 7'6" 4 weight in 3 piece with sock and tube I'm the original owner of this rod purchased probably 15+ years ago. It's in near new condition. Only lawn cast. The cork is slightly soiled. And the tube has scuff marks from a few moves. It's a beautifully made rod with red wraps. Engraved hardware, and ferrule plugs. The ferrules are perfect. Tight, and have plenty of gap. The winner/buyer will get the rod. Sock, and tube.all original. I no longer have warranty papers of any kind. I think there are three important things to note about this rod: 1. The tip section of the rod. Between the tip top and first guide, curves slightly up.to the sky with the rod assembled. And the finish in this section seems slightly rough to me.compared to modern glass blanks. This is cosmetic and doesn't impact ... moreuse of the rod. 2. The rod tube is now scuffed up and scratched. But not badly. One of my photos shows its typical condition. 3. This rod is known for its slooow. Deep flexing action. It bends well into the cork when cast. Truly unusual compared to most any modern glass rod. If you like this type of rod action. There are few other rods like this one. If you don't. I recommend you not get this rod. Drewett Book of Hardy Reels, page 47 lists a"R'L. as unknown, and a pre-war employee of Hardy. The reel has an ebonite crank handle, a BRIDGE OVER the rim tension regulator brass wheel, the classic Hardy Perfect perforated spool, the reel being 2 9/16" wide, the full smooth brass reel seat with the patent# 272409 engraved on the side and mounted on the frame with four brass screws. The circa of this reel is pre- WW I as all the brass was appropriated by the British government for shell casings at the outbreak of hostilities. Very. Very, rare Hardy Uniqua, 2 5/8" reel with the 1906 check, Ivorine handle and the"Abercrombie& Fitch Co. New York" imprint on the back plate. Interior of reel shows the unique- no pun intended- Hardy's Pat. 24245" imprint as well as matching production batch number"4" on the inside of both reel check plate and spool. The reel has the unaltered, four screw, brass foot. As you may note, the leaded finish on the front plate is very, very good. The finish on the rear plate is fairly worn. Nevertheless, this is a pre- World War 1 reel so time has worn the finish ever so gently. The reel turns smoothly and without wobble in the spool or turn handle. What a beautiful complement. All will start at $1.00 with no reserve. This offering is for a Hardy Perfect in the 3 ¼ inch size. This reel is in need of some tender loving care and repair. The reel is a Duplicated Mark II with brass foot. The reel was apparently dropped and the back frame has two cracks. These can easily be seen in the photos. One is at the line guide and one at the foot. These cause the reel to be hard to turn. But everything does seem to work. The click and drag work. I cannot, however, remove the spool, but I have not really tried. I will let the new owner remove the spool and do the repairs. I believe the frame cracks should be an easy repair to fishing condition with silver ... moresolder, or even J.B. Weld. However. That is up to the new owner. Offered for sale is a VINTAGE Hardy SILEX MAJOR 4" RHW casting/salmon reel, Center Pin Reel. Engraved on the inside with the initials"JBW" being the Hardy employee(Joe Wallace who worked for Hardy from 1910-1939) who made this reel. We believe this style reel was a first of this style released by Hardy in 1928. The reel is 4" with twin ebonite crank handles, engraved on the back plate with the maker's name, style and size and the Hardy Patent Numbers 2206, 21131 and 4163, a hexagon nut, with jeweled spindle bearings, an ivorine rim mounted casting trigger, a rear quadrant half moon ivorine weight indicator, a full ribbed brass foot mounted on the frame with two screws. The reel spool has a quick release alloy sliding stud to release the spool. This transitional model we believe is circa 1930's. This is a traditional ... moremodel circa 1930(see J. Drewett book on Hardy Reels) The reel is in fine original condition and is a fine collector reel/ or fishing reel, running very free, retaining silvery patina, with no wobbles to the shaft. This is a very early model centerpin or bait casting model reel. This reel is quite rare especially in this condition. It maintains it's original gray gun silvery metal finish. It is in it's original found condition and has not been repaired or restored. The reel. The break and the break lever is in fine working order. The reel revolves well and the drum release lever is in fine working order. The reel does have the usual scratches and scuffs that you would expect from years of use, all adding to it's character, so evocative of times and anglers past. This variety originated in a mountainous village in central Portugal. We collected it from the Portuguese immigrant who brought it from his family's tree. It has been growing for many years in a Portuguese neighborhood of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It has been growing with minimal protection and has been loaded with figs every year. We trialled and introduced it with the name Dark Portuguese. It is one of our favorite for its delicious figs and its productivity. We did not protect this tree in the winter, but in winter of 2014, it died back to about 2' off the ground. however in the same year it grew about 8' and produced a big crop.
