You are viewing my super 3"dia ORVIS CFO III Fly Reel that is suited for lines#4 to#6. This reel was Made in England by HARDY BROS of Alnwick(although bearing the ORVIS name) Although this reel has been used. It remains in superb mechanical condition. There is some honest paint wear that is visible in the photographs to the backplate. I am supplying with the reel a spare spool and the original ORVIS suede/sheepskin reel pouch. The perforated drum helps reduce the weight of this reel considerably. So much so that(with the backing line) it weighs just 128grms! There are fly lines(with backing) supplied on both spools however I am unable to say what size. Make or condition they are. Very Scarce Hardy Bros. 3 ½” Silex Major Fishing Reel With Auxiliary Brake
Up for auction is this very scarce Hardy Bros. 3 ½” Silex Major single action casting reel with a brass auxiliary brake. This reel has twin black ebonite handles. Ivorine casting trigger, no jewelled bearing, short ribbed brass foot, quick drum release button, straight line writing with no patent numbers, brake adjusting knob located on the rim of the cage and the ivorine half-moon brake indicator dial is located on the back of the cage. This reel has had part of the rim of the cage removed and has been fitted with an auxiliary brass brake arm. On the end of the arm is a felt pad which rubs on the drum when the arm is pressed forward to aid in fighting strong fish. The maker’s initials JD are stamped inside the cage. This reel is retaining over 90% of its original finish and is in excellent condition throughout and comes with a nice ... moreHardy Bros. blocked leather case. 1880-1920 Hardy Wire gold rim spectacles antique EYEGLASSES silver trim case
On offer is a pair of antique gold framed wire sided eyeglasses. They have Hardy imprinted on the nose bridge and tiny letters they I cannot read even with magnification. My guess is that they 1/20 gold filled as many other similar frames were. They have the original leather type hard case with an antique engraved ornate silver trim at the closure. The case has expected signs of wear and some tears in leather and shows it's age- see pictures) The sides of the glasses have an interesting coil pattern snake- type metal working in them not seen on more modern frames. There is a small bit of damage on the corner of the glass on one eye that does not feel rough to the touch(picture#4) That is probably why they were stored away and most likely kept as an emergency spare. The eyeglasses are tiny compared to modern glasses and are from the 1880's-1920's. ... moreThey are listed on historical sites as glasses"made for wearing while riding a horse(or later. Bicycle)or walking" as other glasses of that er had straight sides that had a tendency to fall off, as you can imagine. I have seen photos of people wearing eyeglasses from that era and they look much too small for the person's face. The lenses are very close together) They are substantially different from the eyeglass frames from 1920 on. These measure 4" across and the sides are but 4" long. New reproductions for re- enactments and costumes are also the same in front,roughly copy the narrow width of the front of the glasses, but the new manufacturers add on another 2 inches or so to the side length perhaps to adjust to modern size heads. Sites online sell the new copy of these antique spectacles(frames only-no lenses) for about $125 up. Often in historic novels the eyeglasses are referred to.Even then, as"tiny" I can see why they do. People often kept them in a pocket or purse and wore them only when absolutely needed.

Click and pawl fly reel made for Orvis by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England- circa 1972. Screwback spool spindle post and three hole ported reel foot- hallmarks of the very early models made by Hardy. Reel is 3 inches in diameter by 1 1/8 inches wide(excluding handle and drag knob) and weighs 3.0 ounces. Most suitable for 3 to 5 weight lines/rods, capacity: WF4F plus 300 feet of 20lb Micron backing. Spool opening is 3/4 of an inch wide. Reel is in good used condition overall, both mechanically and cosmetically. Spool is sound and tight. Handle is straight, uncracked and turns smoothly. Spool edge and frame rim wear and fadded finish one would typically anticipate on a well used reel ... moreof this vintage. There is some surface rash on the back and rim of the frame plus around the lettering but nothing that would be considered really obnoxious. No line grooves that are fairly common in these reels. Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply reversing the click pawls. Minimal"drag" regulation may be applied via a plastic knob on the reverse which causes tension springs to exert pressure on the click pawls. Additional drag pressure may be applied manually by palming the spool rim. Includes an inexpensive, generic(not Hardy or Orvis product) olive colored neoprene reel case.
