Gerald"Mel" Keep's fish decoys are listed in the collector's reference book FISH DECOY MAKERS PAST AND PRESENT and are seldom seen on ebay. I recently bought a nice collection of fish decoys which included some good examples of Mel's decoys. This decoy measures 7 3/4" long. It is completely hand made and hand painted in a great looking abstract style. The eyes are burned in as was this carver's custom. The condition is beautiful. Original and unfished with light wear. Normally the maker signs his decoys on the fin with his stamped in name. This one is tough to tell because of the paint on the fins but it is guaranteed to be one of Mel's fish. Made of solid brass by the'Arctic Winner' company in East Rochester, NY(see picture of the manufacturer plate) I'm guessing it was made in the 1920s or'30s. I tried to simulate it sitting in an ice hole(ala bucket) so you could see how it looks/works. The curved wire on top of the reel rotates onto the horizontal wire above the rectangle where the line goes through. When a fish strikes. The line pulls the reel around& the reel& vertical rod falls off the wire, thereby making the flags go up. I hope that's a clear explanation of how it works. ... moreAnyway, it's a neat old item, in very good working condition. It has been repaired by soldering. It is 22" tall. Folded. The exterior does have scuffs scratches and fading color from normal use. A larger dent(yet still small) is seen to the back left corner, and there are two other small dings front and left side and a small bulge on bottom exterior not broken cracked or weak. Minor rust spots to the hinges. The latch, hinges and drain plug are tight and work perfectly. Several pictures are provided. The coolers exterior is in very good condition. Excellent Vintage Estate Found Bamboo Fly or Fresh Water Fishing Rod in fantastic condition in it's original aluminum tube with super exceedingly rare and early hand forged ice spear for spearing fish once caught This terrific vintage fishing set is quite possibly Hardy or Heddon. As there is a nice"H" embellished at the base of the cork handle, but there is nothing hand written as is typical for bamboo rods, or it has simply worn off. This wonderful old 2 piece 6'6" rod is in terrific preowned condition and is a wonderful find for both collectors and resellers too. This early hand forged ice spear is also a rare find for collectors and to find them together as a set is truly scarce. Found while liquidating the estate of a lifelong boat captain and avid collector right on the ocean in Sandwich Massachusetts Please check ... morethe pictures very carefully for their exact age and condition.
