Vintage 1960 French Mitchell 300 Spinning Reel with Extra Spool and Arbor
Normal 0 Made in France: Serial Number 3406454– Made in 1960. This reel does not show signs of its actual age(54 years) no signs of abuse. No dents, no cracks, nothing, a smooth bail, and the spools are smooth, see photos. The drag, bail, anti-reverse is in proper working order. The reel works in a smooth and snappy fashion, with no signs of any problems. Currently, the large(shallow) spool is on the reel. The extra spool is a small(deep) spool for up to 190 yards of 30 lb. test line but there is a blue spool arbor/filler to covert it to a large spool also for lighter line. With proper care, this reel has another 50 or more years of use in it. Overall it is a very good Vintage Made in France Mitchell“300” the most beloved fishing reel ever made” A Touch of History 1937-1962 from the Mitchell Museum: Garcia on behalf of Carpano& Pons and ... morethe owner. Charles Pons, filed for a US Patent on August 3, 1948. Because of this some mistakenly believe The Mitchell was“invented” on this date but this is simply not true. Anyone involved with Mitchell history knows of the true stories about allied soldiers returning from the war in Europe in 1945 with The Mitchell spinning reel. The Mitchell Reel Museum considers the Mitchell Reel the most beloved fishing reel ever made beginning with The Mitchell 300 Spinning Reel. 1971 Mitchell also celebrated the 20-Millionth Mitchell reel manufactured in Cluses. 3 Vintage Reels: Abu Garcia Cardinal 357. 852, Mitchell 300– RUN BUT NEED PARTS/REPAIRS This is a lot of 3 vintage spinning reels: an Abu Garcia Cardinal 357. An Abu Garcia Cardinal 852, and a Garcia Mitchell 300. The good news: they all crank. The bad news: they don’t run correctly and need repairs and cleaning. The good news: I think they’re all worth the effort. Abu Garcia Cardinal 357: This large reel is in fair shape. It’s running fairly well. The bail trips, and the anti-reverse system works. It would benefit from being thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and re-oiled. The drag system needs a little help. It was tightened too much and needs a plastic sleeve which I think would be on a spare spool? Abu Garcia Cardinal 852: This is a pretty rare reel. So the effort it would take to get this running would be worth it. It cranks nicely and ... morethe gears feel good. The bail trips, but needs oil. The slide switch for the anti-reverse system has come off and needs a replacement. Also the screws holding on the back plate are missing. I don’t think anything appears broken with the mount, it just needs screws. I didn’t test the drag system since the anti-reverse needed help. Garcia Mitchell 300: Obviously this reel needs a handle. I cranked it with a handle from another reel and it does run. The bail trips(but need oil) And the drag and anti-reverse systems seem to be working okay. The gears need to be gone through as they grind a little. Aside from that, it’s an ugly duckling. So it will make a perfectly good reel, but would also be a good source of working parts for one that has a better finish. Please see the pictures for a more complete description and in case I’ve missed or forgotten to mention something. And please don’t hesitate to ask questions or for more pictures if you can’t see something. I’m happy to help, but perhaps not the best photographer. This Mitchell 300 is the only one I've ever seen with a five-digit serial number-83571. It shows the signs of use one expects to see on a reel of this vintage. Mitchel reels include 2-306 both good working order, bail on 1 does not flip may need spring, body show signs of use but much of finish intact. Two 308, both good working order, later model finish nice, earlier model shows signs of use& normal wear& tear. Two 304 both are functional one needs a bail spring, finish shows signs of use& normal wear& tear. Five 300, 3 in good working order, 2 with much loss of finish but very smooth action, 3rd has finish mostly intact but exhibits signs of use. This is a decent reel that functions properly with all operations checked. Cosmetically the reel is in very good to very good condition with a decent black finish and vivid graphics. Well preserved Garcia Mitchell 300 in original box with serial number on it. SN 2967619 makes it a Series 6th version and indicates it was made from late 1950's to early 1960's which basically means it is a true vintage"Garcia Mitchell 300" Garcia Mitchell 300 Serial numbers range start at 1880000 to 7900000 from 1958/59 to 1967/68. Reel is in as close to perfect as you can expect and is flawless in operation. Bail snaps shut clean and crisp. Paint has some light insignificant scuffs only. No deep scratches or chipped paint. Really, it's like new. You don't run across these old ones with boxes too often. This is a very collectible. I don't wish to sell it but I have to let it go.
