Penn 185 - "Free Spool" Reel with Original Box - Excellent Condition
Penn 1 8 5 Free Spool Reel- Excellent Condition This reel is used. But it is in really good condition. There is some minor corrosion. It is in good working order. The reel comes with its original box(in poor condition) Also in the box is a Penn tool, Penn lube, and a plastic bag that was supplied with reels of this era. This style of box dates this reel somewhere between 1945 and 1955. This reel was designed for a style of fishing that no longer exists. This is a"free spool" reel. Which means there is no drag system(note the lack of a star drag wheel in the pictures) The lever puts the reel into free spool like any other Penn reel. But, when the reel is in gear the handle will turn either direction(no anti-reverse) If a fish bites, it will take out line by making the handle turn. How much resistance(drag) is determined by the fisherman ... moreby how much resistance he applies to the spinning handle. This requires a lot more skill than modern reels with a brake style drag system. This style reel was popular with"old timers" from about 1930 to 1960. These"old timers" liked these reels because it was what they grew up with. And they were proud that they had the skills to use them. These old timers are all gone now. And no one has made a reel of this type for many decades. I have included a page from the 1942 Penn catalog that describes this reel. 3 to 1 gear ratio. It has a plastic spool that holds 200 yards of 20 lb. mono.
