Up for auction is an attractive antiquarian edition of William Gilmore Simms adventure novel set in South Carolina during the American Revolution. Entitled THE SCOUT: Or. The Black Riders of the Congaree. Published in Chicago and New York by Belford. Clarke& Company in 1887. 472 pages. William Gilmore Simms was a South Carolina author who Edgar Allan Poe once called the best novelist the United States ever produced. Many of his novels were set in South Carolina between the colonial era and the end of the Revolutionary War. He became well-known in the 1850s for his defense of slavery as an institution. And published a secessionist newspaper in Charleston until Union troops entered the city, destroyed his press, and destroyed his house. He died in 1870, at the age of 64. This is a Caxton edition of Simms' novel set in South Carolina ... moreduring the Revolution. Bound in elaborately decorated brown cloth with gilt title field on spine. Floral endpapers. Frontispiece engraving depicting scene from the novel. A quite attractive edition of this lost Southern classic, with strong hinges and very clean interior. In Very Good Plus condition overall. Antique 19thC Troughton& Simms Six Draw Mariners Brass Telescope/ Spyglass An Antique 19th Century Troughton& Simms of London Six Draw 14.75 Inch Long Brass Mariners Telescope or Spyglass. This is a scarce original Period example by a noted Maker. I have had this Telescope apart as far as is practical. All the Lenses including the internal ones are present, one or two of the internal ones have slight damage and the Objective has more serious issues. Most of the threaded components run well on clean threads and tighten properly. The exceptions being. 1 The Objective Lens Housing sits firmly in situ when located on the Barrel but when overtightened it will slip. The associated Threads are compromised and imprecise. 2 The Objective Lens Carrier and its Retainer are very tight so I left them alone for want of the proper tools to get them ... moreundone safely. 3 The Collar between the First and Second Draw is very tight. So again I left it alone for the same reason. The consequence of this third issue is that there is an Internal Lens Assembly that I have not been able to take apart and examine closely. But looking inside there is no obvious damage to it. The Telescope does work but the view in use is somewhat compromised. Mainly due I imagine to dust on the Lenses that I could not reach to clean, that said what is visible in use demonstrates that this is a surprisingly powerful Telescope which would make a very worthwhile restoration project, if not just kept as a collectible or decorative piece. There is no serious damage to the Brass Draws just some general signs of age and use as in normal surface wear and good patina but no cracks. Breaks or structural issues. The Draws are a good friction fit. Moving firmly with some stubbornness in places and with minor sideways play at the joints when fully extended. The Shutter on the Eyepiece is working as intended. All is as shown as comprehensively as possible in the many pictures. Please examine them in close up before you bid, to satisfy yourself as to condition, suitab

There appears to be a letter“T” in the center of the cover. I checked and can't be sure but this looks like a sextant made by Troughton and Simms. However. No where on the sextant can I find a makers name, so this is just a guess. The magnifier is missing and also a screw for the telescope mount. Other than that it appears that it is complete and in working condition. There may be a top cover that is missing. Since I have little knowledge of this item; please check the photos for condition. The doll belonged to my mother in the 1950's and was lovingly played with. The doll and clothing show evidence of having been played with but everything is in good condition. Another Dan West Auction Rare! Simms?1820– 1855) Long Necked Pocket Compass. Gold Gilded, Working! Here offered is a very Rare long necked Compass that can be attributed to we believe the Makers.James and George SIMMs. English compass makers. J& G Simms(1820– 1855) had premises at 4 Broadway, Blackfriars, and at 9 Greville Street, Hatton Garden in London. It is unsigned. However the fleur-de-lys' shape is identical to that featured on the compass signed J. G. SIMMS. The compass measures appx 1 5/8" diameter. 7/16" thick over the crystal. The case is a gilt brass with some of the gold slipping off on the outer diameter and the back exhibits some wear. The transit lock has appx 1/32" movement. Right to left, a bit stiff but does move the entire distance. It does not particularily lock the transit. The bow is missing except ... morefor remnants in the holes. The crystal is in nice condition with no major scratches or other problems other than a cleaning. Particularily inside. The dial is a beauty! Being hand-painted and with the same symbol or fleur-de-lys as stated as one used by Simms. Not much more to say about this jewel. Other than if your into collecting rather Rare and Scarce pocket compasses, then take a look at this long neck. I did not realize that this graphic pattern method was being used this early- I believe the page could be cleaned nicely by a professional conservator- it is drawn in india ink and is on thicker art paper. This is classic good girl art and is signed twice by Campbell- in the panel and below where it is inscribed. I have seen later Cuties but no originals from WW2. E. Simms Campbell was the first African American artist hired by a national publication. Esquire magazine, and the first black syndicated cartoonist. Simms Waders Lk Large King stocking foot 9-11 Used But Not Abused
These waders have been used but not abused. They have a lot of life left. I don't remember the model but they are chest waders. Three layer Gortex, stocking foot, with the flip out zippered compartment and built in rock guards. They did have some pin holes around the knees but have been cleaned, repaired, and treated with revivex. The last time I used them was April 2013 for Lake Erie steelhead and October 2013 for Lake Michigan salmon and they were dry. You will not be disappointed. Money back guarantee. This auction is for a Used Simms fishing jacket. This is a short cut jacket designed for wading. Nylon outer micro rip stop shell laminated to a waterproof breathable barrier of some kind. I do not see any gore tex labeling, so I assume it is a Simms proprietary layer. The Jacket is labeled a size large and measures roughly: Front zipper 26" Bottom of hood to bottom seam down the back 25.5" Arm pit to pit ~27" Under sleeve length ~22" over-sleeve 25" Velcro and elastic closure on sleeves. One external pocket as photographed. Internal bottom draw. External and internal draw cord fitments for the hood. It's a nice jacket. Just not long enough for my needs. Simms 1/2 day pack with matching chest pack
Simms Headwaters 1/2 day pack with matching Headwaters chest pack. This is the previous model that allows the chest pack to be magnetically attached to the front or back. I have used these a grand total of 2 times. There are no signs of wear except a hook mark on the foam fly patch in the chest pack. They are pretty much new. Had to try'em.
