Simms batmobile number 529. While in overall decent shape it is missing the three tailpipes. And the taillights. The passenger rear wheel is missing its hubcap and is split. The windshield has a melted spot in it and inside the car it is cracked on the driver side but is held in place with tape which can't be seen without opening it up. This is a Schmalcalder design prismatic compass from one of the better English survey instrument companies. Troughton and Simms. It was most likely made between 1830 and 1850. It is 4" in diameter and includes the original leather case. The name G. Cuthbert has been engraved on the cover and G. B. Cuthbert is written in ink on both sides of the case. Cambridge is also written on one side of the case. The shoulder strap present but broken. The mirror and sun shades are present and work as they should. The prism slides up and down for better magnification of the card. There appears to be a jewel that the card rotates freely on and it points to north as it should. When the sight folds down it locks the card in place. It does have some light spots on it(please refer to close up pic of sleeve) and also I noticed some residue on the zipper pulls on the front pocket and when I was trying to clean it off I accidently broke the zipper pull off one pocket. I had these repaired several years ago and forgot about them. The neoprene feet look new and I don't think I even wore these after they were repaired at Simms. There was a tear in the leg and that was fixed as well. I tested them and did not detect any leaks. Definately have some wear but should have good life left. Up for auction is this antique 6" proportional dividers in their original fitted wooded case(which I think is Mahogany) The instrument appears to be made of brass with nickel or steel points& threaded post for the locking nut. The maker is Cooke Troughton& Simms. Ltd. London, York& Capetown, as marked on the instrument. The same side is marked"Lines" and"Circles" The other side is marked"Plans" It works well, and is in remarkably good condition. The cosmetic condition is spoiled a bit with the etched initials of a previous owner, though that is not uncommon. Otherwise, the instrument has a number of very faint and very small micro-rubs/scratches that are very inconspicuous. The wooden case is in comparable condition, with a few small, but noticeable dents and scratches. Regardless, a beautiful ... morepiece of engineering history.
