Old Vintage Julius Vom Hofe Casting OR Fly Reel AS FOUND OLD USED STATE
Hello Folks. This item is fresh from an estate for the buyer. I was told this is a good old antique fly casting reel by an old time maker of good reels. On 1 side of reel its marked faintly Julius Vom Hofe and on foot base its marked 3. the size is about 2 1/2 ins. diameter. I guess you would call this reel a small size. The family I purchased it from said there grand father used it as a fly fishing reel. Please look at photos the material on sides has cracks near screws. Reel is NOT falling apart and it works. Size 3/0: A Restigouche Reel(vom Hofe#423) with 3 5/8" diameter spool plate for Salmon. Steelhead and Salt Water. Made in Right hand wind with stainless steel rings, screws and pillars and with a aluminum reel foot. The drag adjusting knob, handle, and click knob are nickle silver like the originals. 1886-1914 JULIUS VOM HOFE #265, *3-1/2 Hard Rubber & NPB Raised Pillar Bait Reel
Up for auction a rather nice and somewhat Scarce CIRCA 1886-1914 JULIUS VOM HOFE NO.265. SIZE 3-1/2 HARD RUBBER& NICKEL PLATED BRASS RAISED PILLAR BAIT CASTING REEL. A very early and unique raised pillar design from this famous New York maker that was introduced in the mid 1880's. I don't know how long this model was produced, but it was still being offered in Vom Hofe's 1914 catalog. I've added a photo of the original listing from the 1896 Vom Hofe catalog. Lightly stamped on the faceplate is"JULIUS VOM HOFE- MAKER N.Y. PAT. JUNE 15'86" while under the foot is stamped with the"3-1/2" size marking. Again, an unusual raised pillar design that has the frame recessed into the hard rubber end plates, with just the pillars themselves being visible. Also comes equipped with a narrow 1-3/8" spool, ... morestrong tailplate-mounted clicker& removable oil cap and a counterbalanced handle with what appears to be a hard rubber grasp. Reel is in just Very Good condition for these, showing overall wear and some brassing. The endplates show no cracks whatsoever. A very early reel that still displays nicely. Works perfectly and remains very smooth-running. A nice example from this venerable Fulton St. maker, all original and complete. To be sold with a very low starting bid and NO RESERVE. Nice old Hard Rubber Raised Pillar Reel. Unmarked as to maker. But appears to be JVH. 3 stamped on bottom of foot. No cracks or chips in any of the ebonite. Hard rubber knob spins freely. If you looked that good after 100+ years and were 100% totally functional then I would say to you" Better start that fountain of youth bottling company" All joking aside this Julius Vom Hofe 2/00 reel is in outstanding condition and ready for any collection of fine reels. There are no dings. Cracks, missing pieces etc. period. One of the smoothest reels that I have ever had the chance to operate in a real long time. Quiet as a mouse, guaranteed. Even the clicker is quiet but strong. You can tell the quality by looking at the washers on the side plates. Who in their right mind makes washers like that? Julius Vom Hofe is considered. In some circles, to make some of the finest fishing equipment available. This piece is marked with 3 of his patents. The first is Nov 17 1885 which was for using hardened rubber end plates with metal bands, the second was Oct 8 1889 which was for a rear spool bearing pivot and washer, and the third, and possibly most important, was Mar 21 1911 which was for B-Ocean Star Drag. This is in great condition with only a little patina and wear to the leather thumb cover. The actual mechanism functions as smooth as butter. This could be surf ready with a little cleaning and oiling. This measures approx. 5" across, and 4 1/4" in diameter. What a great piece of fishing history! Ready to be part of your next fish story! You are bidding on a collectable early fly reel that has been in my collection for many years. It is an early marked“Horrocks& Ibbotson Co. Utica. NY” As with many of their reels it also has the“Julius Vom Hofe. Maker, NY” stamping. The reel operates smoothly as does the click engage button. The foot has not been altered. The only visible irregularity is a ¾ inch crack in the hard rubber face that contains the click check assembly. The reel’s diameter is 2 inches and the line spool’s width is 1 inch. The reel displays minimal usage ware overall. The reel will make a fine collectable. Antique Julius Vom Hofe casting reel. Stamped on side of reel is JULIUS VOM HOFE PAT.NOV.17. 85 OCT. 8, 1889 BROOKLY, N.Y. Stamped on side of handle is SOLD BY VOM HOFE CO. N.Y. Weight of reel is 1 lb. 2 oz. Metal that reel is made of is non magnetic. I think it may be nickel. Also, material that is not metal may be bakelite. It is a hardened material. Knob on handle is either wood or bakelite. Diameter of reel side is 3 1/2" Reel seems to function as it should. As you can see in photos it does need a good cleaning. I have left it in the condition that I found it. I have been told by a person that knows a little about these reels that this one is unusual in that it has a line guard. Antique Julius vom Hofe Size 4 Fishing Fly Reel for Parts or Repair
Here is an antique size 4 Julius vom Hofe fly fishing reel. I cannot make out any maker's mark that is left. As you can see from the photos there is significant damage to the front plate with cracks and chips. The back plate is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The reel still spins nicely and the sliding click works well and is strong. All the screws are original and present. The foot is full length and retains most of its nickel plating. The handle and knob are in very good condition with the exception of plating lose on the handle shaft. The hard rubber knob is nice with no chips or cracks. Please see photos for condition. This is a antique JULIUS VOM HOFE Casting reel in real nice condition. This reel has two patent dates stamped on the side plate(Nov 17 85, Oct 8,1889) Brooklyn, NY. REEL DIAMETER IS 2 3/8" 1 3/8" inside width, reel foot 2 3/8"long, 1/2 wide, with the stamp of 3 1/2 on the underside. Everything works on this reel cranks forward and reverse smoothly and the clicker is loud and strong as well. There are no cracks on this reel, except for some tarnish on the metal and some small nicks it is in nice condition considering its age. This a classic addition to anyone's reel collection. The custom features include a full German silver band on the rim of the head plate and a factory cork arbor. The smaller size would indicate a surf casting reel as would the narrow spool and the custom cork arbor. With the click off the reel spins for what seems like forever. Again, perfect for surf casting. A vintage hard rubber and brass fishing reel very faintly marked on the hard rubber on one side"Julius Vom Hofe- Maker- N.Y. Pat. Oct. 1889" It measures approximately 3 1/8" in diameter across the side. 2 7/16" in width(not including the handle or buttons) and the foot is 3 1/16" in length. There are no cracks or lines in the hard rubber but the hard rubber is scuffed, scratched, and has a small area of surface loss on one side. The metal spool is tarnished and oxidized. One of the screws is missing on one side and the nut on the handle is rusted. The attached images give an accurate impression of the reel's cosmetic condition. Mechanically, the reel is in working order and the click mechanism works although somewhat weakly. When the click button is set to free spin the reel catches a bit when turned. The Universal Special 501 and 521 models were the first Edward vom Hofe to be fitted with a star drag. According to Ted Bingham's book. EVH reels with star drags first appeared in print around 1912. This early example is marked with serial# D-57 indicating that it was made in 1911 or early 1912 making this example perhaps one of the very first Edward vom Hofe reels built with a star drag. The feature that would revolutionize sportfishing. There is also the possibility that this reel may have been retro-fitted with a star drag after 1912. Regardless, this is a very nice. Channel bass and tarpon. The 501 was Edward vom Hofe's flagship reel. In 1907 the 501 became the CELEBRATED BASS. TARPON& TUNA REEL and by 1911 the reel was dubbed the UNIVERSAL SPECIAL. The 501 is absent from catalogs starting in 1918 and its features along with those of the 521 were combined to make the famous 621 Universal Star reel. Early 20th C. Ebonite Reel in the style of Julius Vom Hofe
An early 20th Century Saltwater or Big Game Multiplying Reel of American manufacture and origin in the style of Julius Vom Hofe. The reel is constructed from ebonite and German Nickel Silver. It is missing the counterbalance on the reel handle and there seems to have been a plate placed under the check button at some point during its life. It is very well constructed. Some of its parts have been finely milled and the ebonite is of excellent quality. There has been corrosion, most probably from saltwater to the Nickel Silver as is clearly shown in the photographs. It runs exceptionally smoothly and has a fully working check. There is no visible or obvious sign of a trade mark but the style is that of Julius Vom Hofe although it could equally be by another unknown maker. The reel weighs 972g when placed on the digital scales and is 4 3/8ths ... morein diameter. The drum measures 3 5/8ths from the outer edges of each ebonite side plate. Condition as seen. A very scarce narrow spool fly/trout reel from Julius Vom Hofe. Nickel plated brass with hard rubber handle grasp at the end of the counter balanced handle. The small size 3 1/2 reel is just 2 3/8" in diameter and has a very narrow 5/8" wide spool, just wide enough to fit the full length foot with Julius Vom Hofe's trademark"hole in the foot" Stamped on the tail plate with the"Julius Vom Hofe- Pat- Oct.8'89" mark, with knurled removable end cap and sliding click switch that works perfectly. With all the original parts, this scarce reel does have some plating loss in spots such as the face plate and head plate rim, with old line residue on the spool that will clean up a little if desired. Offered here is a Julius Vom Hofe 5/0 fishing reel. Nice early example. It is in need of the cleaning a true collector can provide. Measuring about 4& 1/2 inches in diameter. It is possible this was a custom made device. My research kind of lead me to that but I'm sure you know more than I. Rubber on the bottom is cracked as you can see from the picture on outside panel and top of inside the same panel. I've included a little history-probably just stuff you already know. Hope it fills a need in your collection. Julius vom Hofe Company was established in 1857. He received several patents and became one of the most prolific reel makers. This patent is for the reel end plates being made of hard rubber with metal protective bands. This patent was granted on November 17. 1885. The other common patent date seen on this reel is October ... more8, 1889. This was for a rear spool bearing steel pivot and washer. Julius was one of the most prolific reel designers with 9 patents granted to him. His models range from the highest quality solid nickel silver(German silver) reels to less expensive nickel plated brass and hard rubber reels. All of his reels are sought by collectors. His earliest pre-patent date reels were the ball handle style and had a distinctive clover leaf logo stamped in the reel's head plate. Julius vom Hofe made reels for a number of Sporting Goods dealers and marked them with his name and that of the company. This included companies like Thos. J. Conroy in NY. Abbey& Imbrie in NY and von Lengerke& Detmold in NY. All of the reels pictured below are nickel silver or nickel silver and hard rubber.

Today we're offering an outstanding antique bamboo rod made by the legendary Edward Vom Hofe! He's been known for his high quality fishing rods, reels and terminal tackle. Edward Vom Hofe was a New York fishing equipment entrepreneur of the late 1800s. He introduced his first two fly reels. Starting his own business in 1867. This rod has an unusual crackle finish. That's actually quite attractive. Two small sections have been cleared of this finish, perhaps as an area to be customized with one's name and address? This rod measures approximately 73 1/2" in length and comes in two ... moresections. The rod is signed on several areas. On the rod butt and on the male ferrule going into the reel seat of the handle and also I believe"No. 4" is written on the bottom of the reel seat to indicate the model number. As for condition. I'd say this rod is in pretty nice shape with trumpet guides, a tip with an agate liner, a newer guide with an agate-like liner and original cane hand grips. The newer guide is a little loose, but the others are fairly tight. All in all, it's a very good rod for its age! This is a great rod for a high-end antique rod. Reel and tackle collection! vintage E. vom Hofe fishing rod, 65", no reserve
I am admittedly wholly out of my depth here so I'll have to let my pictures tell the story and throw myself on the mercy of potential bidders. All I can add is that assembled. The rod is appx 65" in length. But one additional comment. I know that such rods are conventionally made with bamboo, but I could swear that the wood here is mahogany. Have no idea if that common, unusual or I simply cant distinguish mahogany from bamboo. In any event, it will be shipping in the hard thick 42" long cardboard tube as shown in the picture, which I might add, is great for storing rods in general. No other markings except for: No. 6 which is up near top on reel seat. ANTIQUE VINTAGE EDWARD VOM HOFE FISHING REEL !!
Up for auction is this very old Edward Vom Hofe fishing reel. It is inscribed“Edward Vom Hofe Maker” on one side. All of the screws are straight, the handle turns freely and there are no cracks or repairs and it functions well. There is also a number#2 on the base plate. The diameter of this reel is 2 ¾” and it is 2 3/8” wide not including the handle. The base plate is 3 ¼” long. This is as nice as an example as you will find. This reel is in wonderful vintage condition. Use it in your collection or fish with it. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find these classic reels in this condition. There is no doubt this reel could polish up to look like the day it left the Vom Hofe factory.

Marked with serial number F21 this German silver( No pitting just needs a good cleaning) Hard rubber side plated reel is in very good condition, with very little signs of screw head use as shown in the pictures and very slight surface ware to the side plates. There is a few small chips next to the screws shown in the last picture. The full length foot is marked with both the model number and size 521 and 6/0. The leather thumb drag is barely used, The oil caps are dated with the 1896 patent on the tail plate and 1902 patent on the head plate Mechanically everything is operating normally but a little heavy with the old lubricants. This reel looks like it was barely used and put away just needs a thorough cleaning and lube and I think it could be the pride of anyone's collection. Vintage Edward vom Hofe Excelsior 7/0 Hook ~ 2 Abbey & Imbrie Hooks in Packs
Here are three hook packs. The one in the middle is a 7/0 Edward vom Hofe"Excelsior" on a wire leader with a brass swivel. The thin wire does have a break which you can see through the package. There are also two Abbey& Imbrie hooks on German silver wires with swivels. One is a 6/0 Chum Hook and the other is a 5/0 Carlisle hook. I never took them out of the package because I didn't want to tear the packaging. There is a small bit of rust residue on the packs with a few small holes where the hook pushed through.
