I believe the 3831 number on one side of the reel is the model number but more exciting is the"Patented Feb 10. 1903- Jan 22, 1907" engraved on the reel which can be seen clearly with the help of a magnifying glass. On the other side of the reel is the bulldog logo trademark for Pflueger Goldenwest. The reel works great. RARE Mepps France Travel Fishing ROD Super Meca Reel + Canvas/Leather Case Vtg
This auction is for a vintage Mepps travel rod and reel that belonged to a family who used to live in France. This is a vintage set. Probably from the late 60's or early 70's I would guess. I think this must be pretty rare. As I have never seen a Mepps-branded rod before. It appears that it all went together as found. There is a leather and canvas carry case, the telescoping rod, the reel, an original instruction sheet(all in French) and an extra spool. The orange Super Meca reel is in fantastic condition.I only lightly wiped it down. It operates smoothly and effortlessly. It has a thumb screw to allow it to swivel to the side for more streamlined storage in the bag. The inside is clean as a whistle too.see close up. There are only a couple of minor rub marks on the finish. The telescoping rod needs a little help-all of the guides ... moreare loose and I think it got banged around in storage all of these years. It is complete. And I think it is worth having restored since I cannot find anything anywhere on Mepps rods. Coming from France, maybe it was some kind of employee gift or something. The rest of the rod is very nice.all of the pieces are nice. As is the cork grip. The canvas travel case is a bit dirty, but has a leather bottom, leather trim, leather handle and leather straps. It is solid and usable or would make a great display. There is a two-sided pocket on it. All in all, a great vintage piece with a fantastic vintage reel made by one of the all time lure companies. Great Vintage Split Bamboo & Turned Handle Hardwood Fishing Rod w/ Penn 149 Reel
Fresh from a local estate. This is a great vintage split bamboo and amazing turned hardwood grip rod( no makers mark) with a beautiful vintage Penn 149 reel. The reel works great, and is in good condition save some light pitting, which I think could mostly be be cleaned off( it's not very deep) The rod is in equally good shape, although a ferrell has come off(but is included) The 2 piece rod measures a full 6.5 feet long when put together and the reel is 4.5 inches in diameter,and roughly 4 inches wide. Vintage Fishing Rod Casting Reel Seats Handles J.C. Higgins and Longfellow
These two seats/grips are from vintage casting rods. Both are cast aluminum with good cork grips. The bottom seat is marked LONGFELLOW and FRASER. MICH. It has the standard large'nut' on top: the rod end goes down into the hole and the nut is tightened to hold the rod in place. The top reel seat is marked J.C. HIGGINS and OUR OWN TRADEMARK and SOLD ONLY BY SEARS. ROEBUCK& CO. This seat has a friction fit hole for the rod(no threaded nut) And a thumb lever that holds the reel securely in the seat. The bottom end of the lever has a metal tip(not aluminum like the rest of the lever)see 3rd photo) to prevent wear. Both seats are in good condition but have been used and are not mint.
