VINTAGE FRED ARBOCAST JITTERBUG FISHING LURE Akron Oh.
In the 1930s. Arbogast introduced a number of new lures, including the flat-headed Wiggler, which Arbogast dressed up with a patented rubber skirt to create the Hawaiian Wiggler. But Arbogast’s biggest contribution to the world of fishing lures was probably the wooden. Peanut-shaped Jitterbug, introduced in 1937 and patented in 1940. In fact. The Jitterbug began in the 1920s as a failed attempt on Arbogast’s part to create a plug lure similar to ones being made by Heddon. Arbogast’s prototype had been carved from a piece of broomstick attached to the bowl of a spoon, but it was only after tinkering with the lure a decade later that it became the Jitterbug. WORLD WAR TWO JITTERBUG This plastic Fred Arbogast Jitterbug lure is one of the ones produced during World War Two when aluminum was scarce. Hence the plastic(red) lips" The lure does not look to have been fished much, lip edges show practically no wear and outside of front hook"tracks" on either side, there's only one little nick(right rear near hook hanger- photographed) The paint is scale pattern, gold base with green overlay, which I believe is called perch. Underside is a yellowish, there's some gray paint around each"hanger" which looks like factory applied to cut down on rust(hooks could stand some cleaning, appears to be just surface stuff though) Other than a couple"use marks" there's a rub on the very rear but it could be a production related item as the black back paint looks to run ... moreinto the area(about 1/8" A nice lure for its age and great WWII fishing item! Many spinner blades, few stinkers and hooks, 3 fishing reels. Reels are vintage also, 2 of the 3 look like in need of repair. I’m not an antique lure collector but a quick search on the net returned this information. Lures are from the 1940’s to present time frame. Here are a few I researched: 1. Heddon. Tiny Crazy Crawler. This lure could be un-fished we would have no way of knowing. This displays with a pristine white body and red head. NO serious damage found anywhere. This one has the plastic lip fully intact. Often times these are found with a damaged lip. The plastic lip Jitterbugs were only made during the WWII era due to all metal being used for the war. It's doubtful you'll a nicer one anytime soon. This Jitterbug's a beauty! THE BOX: This was found in just the box bottom. There is NO LID for this particular box. There's no serious damage found on the box. There's light soiling.
