Everything works fantastic on the reel, the drags are smooth which means somebody took the time to make sure the drag was released after use. The reel is very smooth, bail works with a nice snap, and the baitrunner section works flawlessly. We guarantee the reel to be as described! 1950's LAWRENCE MONOSPOOL FISHING REEL--MODEL No. 290M--CLEAN--PENN CLONE
Offered in this listing is a Lawrence Tackle Manufacturing Corporation saltwater conventional fishing reel. This particular reel is the Model 290M. This reel is basically a copy of a Penn Long Beach. As a matter of factor. All Lawrence saltwater reels were copies of Penn with cosmetic differences built into the design to make enough of a difference to be legally, a independent product. The Lawrence was for all practical purposes a Penn clone. It, looks runs and feels like a Penn, which is a good thing because Penn made a great product. Cosmetically the biggest difference is the checkerboard design molded into the side plate. The Lawrence offered in this listing is in great condition. Not perfect but certainly good enough to display as a vintage antique item or to put line on and go fishing. Everything works as it should and it works very ... morewell. The feel of the reel is smooth and crisp. As if it was not used too often. There is some pitting and chrome loss. An interesting fact about these Lawrence reels is that the plastic parts were made from Melmac. They were made in many colors, with the standard color being black. This Model 290M is green. I have included a scan of a page from a vintage Lawrence catalog with a reference to this reel. All the information about the model is on this scan. Many Lawrence reels were sold as Trade Reels. The one in this sale was one of those reels. The brand name"Lawrence" was not used on the reels sold as Trade reels, as can be observed on this reel. There is no difference between a Lawrence Trade Reel or a Lawrence reel sold with the manufactures name molded onto the side plate except for the labeling on the reel. Offered in this listing is the Penn Master Mariner 349H conventional wire line trolling reel. The reputation of this reel is classic. They are tall and narrow reels. Penn introduced the style in the late 1930's with a three reel series numbered 249. 149 ad 49. They were introduced as Deep Sea Fishing reel with a side use for Deep Water wire line trolling for Salmon or Dee Sea bottom fishing. This style reel soon developed a large following but needed an upgrade to compete in style of fishing it was aiming at, namely big game fishing. A new reel was needed and in 1957, for the company's 25th Anniversary, Penn introduced the highly improved Penn 349 in four versions. The reel offered in this listing is one of those versions. The reel you see in the pictures is a vintage. Black side plate Model 349H. The"H" after the model ... morenumber mean high speed retrieve ratio, 3 1/4 to 1. I have included in the picture section the page scanned from the Penn1957 catalog mentioning all the specs and upgrades of the Model 349. This reel was the full evolution of the tall and narrow Deep Sea Reels. Basically the upgrades that create the 349 are two position power handle, one piece bronze spool, six screw stand, convertable drag in the"C" version, steel gears and external drags for servicing of drags without breaking down the reel. The reel pictured here is the reel the winner will receive. It is used. The side plates have no cracks or chips but the reel does have some scratches. It is a very presentable reel that has been taken down, cleaned, all internal parts checked, lubed, assembled and adjusted. It runs smooth, strong and fast. AMAZING CLEAN 1880'S FLIP RING STYLE VINTAGE FLY FISHING ROD!!!
Times are tough and kills me to let this one go! I have a large collection of vintage fishing gear that I have been selling of on a daily basis. This rod is about as clean as it gets and has been prized piece for years. I believe it to be made from basswood or lance wood. The rod is arrow straight! There is no loose or missing wraps. The finish is clean with no issues like bad varnish issues. Only a couple of scuffs. All of the wraps are there and no missing flip rings! You rarely find one this old not missing any flip ring guides. There is no corrosion or finish issues on the nickel silver hardware. The grip is rattan and has NO flaws. There is a nice patina on the blank and rattan grip. There are only a couple of scuffs on the blank that you have to look hard to see. You could fish this rod with confidence if you choose to. Sadly the second ... moretip section is missing. Again. This rod is about as good as they get for a rod of this vintage! Even the holder is high end. It is 9" with a super light action that go's to the entire length of the rod. The entire rod is in original condition with no repairs! It was made in the late 1880's Don't let this one get away!
