Here is a great piece of history. A 1940's Brochure put out by the Ashaway Line and Twine Mfg. Co. Ashaway R.I. called"Anyone can fish! This was distributed during WW II as a way to get people self sufficient and to help solve the nations food problem by teaching people to fish as a food source. The booklet is packed with fishing instruction for fresh and salt water. Fish identification, tackle basics, cleaning and cooking tips, recipes, and information on how Ashaway Line co. helped develop a survival fishing kit for U.S. troops in WW II. During the war, Ashaway Line Co. was fully dedicated to the war effort and was not producing fishing line for the public. c. 1890s Martin's Silk Lines, Storing Reels, Fishing Rods brochure SCARCE
Any fishing-related ephemera from the 1890s is extremely scarce. Here is a wonderful and illustrated four-page brochure by the E.J. Martin company of Rockville. Connecticut featuring their braided silk lines, transferring and storing reels, and some fishing rods. There is a front page(see photo 1) inside left page featuring Martin's"Business" Fish Lines with a single illustration, inside right page featuring transferring and storing reels with a single illustration, and then the back cover(see photo 2) which lists various rods, including lancewood rods. Martin was of Kingfisher Line fame, and was bought out by Horton Manufacturing in 1920. While there is no date on this brochure, I am guessing 1890s based on research. For example, The Sportsman's Directory from 1891 specifically mentions on page 181, under"Fishing Tackle, ... morethe Martin's braided silk lines, for which the company had become famous. This brochure measures 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches, and opens to 8.5 by 11 inches. Guaranteed vintage original advertising brochure.
