The end label is easily readable with the Winchester logo and fly pattern printed there. A picture of the Fly's listing in the 1926/27 Winchester Store catalog is shown. Vintage HARDY Bros'NERODA' fly box with old flies. A vintage Neroda fly box made from Bakelite with a oxblood finish manufactured by Hardy's of Alnwick with a selection of old British river flies. This fly box belonged to my father and we fished the Spey together in Scotland when I was a boy so it is definitely 40 years old and likely older and so are the flies. There's a good selection of fully dressed flies hooked over the metal fittings and can not drop out or change position. This Neroda box is i n excellent condition for it's age. Opens and closes well with no bends or warps. Vintage Lot of 24 Different Fishing Flies Still on Original Card #10 Size Hook
This set of vintage fishing flies. Which I estimate to be from the 1950s or 1960s, was found in a fishing tackle box with old and vintage equipment. The card they were originally mounted to was cut in half, with corners and edges trimmed, so it would fit inside the box. The uneven two pieces, when joined together as shown, measures around 6 3/4" x 7" This was made in Japan back when they made a lot of items shipped to the U.S. There are 25 small round pieces of cork, each with a fly inserted into the cork. Each is named, and one is missing, so there are 24 total included. The card says they are on No 10 Hook Size. Each hook has thread wrapped around it, but none have any feathers. If they were originally there, they must have been worn off. The card shows wear and some soiling from being in a tackle box all these years. Interesting ... morepiece. Or two pieces, actually. Vintage leather fly fishing pouch with 42 flies! Estate find! I do not know anything about fly fishing or flies. Hopefully the pictures tell all. It is very cool, old and musty but cool! I counted approximately 42 flies. Some look fancy, others don't. They are all kind of stuck to the cloth and I didn't want to risk damaging anything or hooking myself! 1950s Vintage Fly Fishing Flies Haywood Co. Denver Colorado in Boxes
For sale at a buy it now fixed price is this rare find.flies from the Haywood Manufacturing Co. of Denver Colorado. This iconic company didnt last very long and any items from them are very hard to find. Even living in Denver I think I have only ever seen one reel before and never any flies. About the only things you find on line are occasional magazine ads of their line of fishing equipment. They were around post WWII until about the mid 1950s. Anyway. Here are two boxes of Haywood Flies. Note the prominent logo and the neat graphics on the undercard. In the first are four No. 14 mosquito flies and the box is marked that. The second box is marked No. 12 Royal Coachman Tail and it has four of those as well 12 other size 12 flies that are a mixed lot. Most of the flies are snelled. None of the flies has been fished. HARDY BROTHERS ALNWICK. ENGLAND. LA BRANCHE(HEWITT) PINK LADY DRY FLIES PATTERN DESIGNED for AMERICAN ATLANTIC SALMON SIZE 2 SKS. COMPLETE BOX of 1/2 DOZEN. MINT. 1931. Offered is a box of six large Hardy Brothers salmon dry flies of the La Branche Pink Lady pattern. Tied in the collaboration of the famous early 20th Century American fly fishermen/fly tyers Edward Ringwood Hewitt(1866-1957) and George Michel Lucien La Branche(1875- From A Fly Fishing History by Dr. Andrew N. Herd: After Wood. The focus of salmon fishing development moved to America. Three men were to pioneer a new breakthrough: Hewitt, La Branche and Monell. Their inspiration came from none other than Theodore Gordon, who tied dry flies for salmon some time before 1903. Although La Branche proved that salmon would take just about any dry fly, he developed a special series ... moreof palmer hackled flies for the purpose, which rode high on their hackle points. LaBranche was later to compare the patterns to bottle brushes. And the trio settled on four patterns: the Colonel Monell, Soldier Palmer, Pink Lady Palmer, and the Mole. Despite Gordon, Monell, Hewitt and LaBranche's pioneering work, the dry fly was not popularised until the 1930s. When Lee Wulff revisited the whole problem of floating flies for salmon, and indulged in some major design work. The result was the Gray Wulff, a pattern which was so successful that it encouraged the inventor to develop the White Wulff and the Royal Wulff. The three patterns still form the mainstay of many fishermen's dry fly boxes. The dry fly method works well for salmon, anywhere where fish are present in large quantities, where a sighted fish can be accurately fished to, or in water temperatures over 60° Fahrenheit, which may explain why it is not so successful in Northern Europe.
