The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. This is a good quality two-piece bronze medal with a pinback top bar. It is about 2" top to bottom. These medals awarded for service on the Mexican Border prior to WWI are much scarcer than the locally issued WWI medals. As there were far fewer cities, towns, states and regiments that issued them and there were many fewer potential recipients. I estimate that there were perhaps 200-250 different Mexican Border Service Medals struck. Some are quite scarce. Generally VF-XF condition. Basal edge is straight and corners are rounded. Cross-section is bi-convex and flaking is by initial percussion followed by pressure. Resharpenings have reduced the original size of the blade.
