On February 4. 1861, representatives from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina met in Montgomery to form the Confederate States of America. Montgomery was named the first capital of the nation and Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as President on the steps of the State Capitol. Montgomery remained in the hands of the Confederates until April 12, 1865, a few days after Robert E. Lee surrendered, when Maj. Gen. James H. Wilson captured Montgomery for the Union. Confederate Cover Scott CSA#4 Pair 1 Damaged Alabama Notes On Envelope I can't make out the town in the date stamp. But I'm pretty sure the state is Alabama. I have another cover addressed to the same Captain in the same handwriting with an Alabama date stamp. There is writing in pencil on both sides of the cover. It appears to be a list of needed supplies such as coffee. Paragoric(to be sent by Capt. Sikes) There is another very faint notation on the bottom half of the front. All I can make out for sure is"Tell Capt. On the back is also some notes containing some dollar amounts and possibly something about"his right hand" I have provided some enhanced scans of the cover to help in reading the notes. Someone with better photo editing skills than I have may be able to decipher more. There are no contents. University of Alabama Button
This is an awesome button for those that collect state buttons. I know of less than a dozen examples that have been found. I contacted the University of Alabama and spoke with the curator of the historical collections and he informed me that the university did not have one in their collection nor had he even seen one. A very scarce button indeed. This was recovered by me while relic hunting in South Alabama in 2009 and has been in my private collection since then. It is not listed in Albert's button book, but can be found in Tice's book(photos included) The wording is Greek( UNIVERSITAT ALABAM) and depicts the original Minerva. At the time this button was created the university had an enrollment of 126 students(1851) my guess it was for someone within the faculty. Young Smith& Co, the button's maker was in business from 1830-1858.

DUG Artillery Fragments plus RARE Naval Watercap Fuse. Bridgeport, Alabama.
Another nice grouping out of the Bridgeport. Alabama area that I have listed. We have two artillery fragments which look to be off a Hotchkiss but I am not 100% positive which exact shell it is. One piece is round and could be a top or bottom fragment and the other is from the side of the shell. The beauty of this grouping is the RARE Naval Watercap fuse in excellent condition. It is marked 1863 R and ORD'D with an anchor and at some point was high lighted with white paint. When I bought all these Alabama pieces I was told they were all DUG in the 1950's. This lot is starting at what I think the fuse alone is worth. A similar fuse is shown on page 12 of the book Artillery Fuses of the Civil War by C.H. Jones. An extremely rare piece of Alabama and/or Georgia currency. 150 plus years of living history in one exciting bank note. A fantastic opportunity. From the latter part of the 1700’s through the early 1870’s obsolete currency(often referred to as Broken Bank Notes) came from many sources. I.e. States, Counties, Municipalities, Military, Banks, Corporations, and Private Merchants just to mention a few. Most people don’t realize that before the U.S. Government started regulating the banking industry in 1861, the aforementioned had their own money printed and thus provided collectors with lots of different themes and varieties. There are many choices and collectors can focus on their preferred notes. You can collect notes with a certain vignette(picture or scene) a particular State, city, or bank. Some people collect notes with bridges, signatures, ... morecattle, horses, whales, ships, etc, and yes, even Santa Claus! Many obsolete bank notes are absolutely beautiful in artistic design and coloring. Depending on the grade(condition) many of these types notes are fairly inexpensive and readily available. Every paper money collector should have at least one piece of obsolete currency in his/her collection! There are many different references for individual states currency and they can be found online from various publishers and book dealers. For Southern States currency, I highly recommend“Southern States Currency” by Hugh Shull, published by Whitman Publishing Company.
