Up for auction is an original vintage photograph of the Westfield class of 1953 in Birmingham. AL. There are over 100 students identified and five staff members. Westfield High opened in 1934 and closed in 1971. Through the years. Westfield High School produced graduates who achieved prominence in various fields: teaching, law, medicine, science, journalism, politics, business, management and last, but not least, parents and home-makers who instilled in their children the"Westfield Spirit" so that they too, would pursue a course of excellence in their lives. The school was closed because it could not be integrated. There were no white prospective students and the Federal Courts ordered all such schools closed with provision for transporting the Black children to formerly all-white schools. This was the 1950s and 25 cents was like 3 or 4 dollars now! This is exactly the kind of thing which would have gotten her labeled as"uppity" by a certain segment of the white population of Birmingham but- truth be known- the company that owned the parking lot probably welcomed her business(the white attendant. Perhaps not so much) I lived in Birmingham at the time and this is exactly the way things were. Very good condition. History in the making. For the most part. Local business in Birmingham Alabama actually wanted to improve relations between black and white at the time but were afraid to make overt efforts because of sorry politicians and because of certain segments of the white working class(who overwhelmingly voted for those sorry politicians because they were manipulated into doing so by the corporate hierarchies in places like Pittsburgh) These photos came out of one of several black estates I've gotten in to lately. No date Richmond College in the early 20th Century was attended by less than 300 students. Almost half this number belonged to five fraternities previously chartered on the campus. The little Baptist college. Founded in 1830, became home to Sigma Phi Epsilon. Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded because 12 young collegians wanted a campus fellowship based on Judeo/Christian ideals that neither the college community nor the fraternity system at that time could offer. The desire for brotherhood was in the young men's ... moresouls. Sigma Phi Epsilon was needed. Carter Ashton Jenkens. The 18-year-old son of a minister, had been a student at Rutgers University, New Jersey, where he joined Chi Phi Fraternity. When he transferred to Richmond College in the Fall of 1900, he sought companions to take the place of the Chi Phi brothers he had left behind. He found five men who had already been drawn into a bond of friendship and urged them to join him in applying for a charter of Chi Phi at Richmond College. The request for a charter was forwarded to Chi Phi only to meet with refusal. Chi Phi felt that Richmond College was too small for the establishment of a Chi Phi chapter. Wanting to maintain their fellowship. Carter Ashton Jenkens, Benjamin Gaw, William Carter, William Wallace, Thomas Wright, and William Phillips decided to form their own local fraternity. Unusual Alabama Mobile #2 Mourning Cross ~ WWII era Masonic Medal
Unusual"Alabama" Mobile no.2" Mourning Cross. I'm not exactly sure what this medal commemorates but it's very well made and looks military or Masonic. It has a black ribbon and the metal is set with white and black porcelain. There are no hallmarks at all. It measures 3 1/2 inches tall and is 1 3/4 inches wide. It's in good condition but has some green corrosion on the metal parts and a little soiling on the ribbon. Please see all the pictures for best description. Ships for $3.00.
