GORGET-INCISED: MOUNDBUILDER, COOSA RIVER VALLEY, ALABAMA Length: 4 1/2" Height: 1 1/4" Thick: 1/4" Weight: 1.6 oz About 5 miles southeast of the town of Ragland. Alabama. Near the Coosa River. A farmer in the late 1800s found this intriguing incised gorget. I acquired this beautiful thin artifact from his out of state descendants. The term gorget is used for items which are perforated with two or more holes. The term itself implies that the object was worn around the throat or suspended on the breast. They are commonly called"ceremonial stones" and it is most likely that stone gorgets had some social significance. Exactly what this was still eludes us. This gorget has a base curve. Giving it an almost lunar crest shape. Intriguingly. Many banner stones have this very form) Made from a fine-grained clay-stone. The ... moreartifact has two ends that slope upwards from the center holes. Incised lines run the length of both ends. In the center. Between the holes are two parallel, vertical lines with a long top that angles outwards in a tree-like base. Other incisions are below this. If anything. From a distance this looks surprisingly like an owl face, though that is purely speculative. The rear of this gorget has the remnant-glue of an old label. Which no longer exists on the piece. Slight dings and rear incision-marks are visible. Though these may be part of the overall design. This is a gorgeous gorget. Most do not have the incised lines on this piece. Smooth shiny finish. It does have a tiny flea bite chip from the center of one eye, and two tiny flea bites in the edge of the tail which I could not even get in a photo they were too small. But if you know they are there, then you can feel them on the edge. No other damage to this guy and he is a cutie! Signed by Foster at the bottom. Approx. 125 words. Foster ... morealso talks about his Monroe County Chapter 4 running behind in its duties because of lack of a Chapter Secretary- a situation he says that will soon be remedied. No handstamp or other postal markings. This letter was likely delivered by hand to the Grand Chapter officers in Tuscaloosa. As addressed on the verso. It was also docketed- probably by Armand Pfister of Tuscaloosa- and turned over to the Grand Chapter's Committee on Credentials. Letter, when unfolded to read, measures 12 inches tall by 7 1/2 inches wide but the actual sheet size is 12 inches tall by 15 inches wide. Claiborne is a dead town now but would have been quite a busy place back in 1827 and likely there was a good bit of steamboat traffic between Claiborne and Tuscaloosa whereby it would be commonplace for friends to hand-deliver letters for friends. Old folds. A little faint but written in a good hand and fairly easy to read. Written on high quality paper with the J. W. Son watermark. Series: 2nd Bears the printed signature of Gov. John Shorter John Gill Shorter was born in Monticello. Georgia. on April 3, 1818. His father, Dr. Reuben C. Shorter, a physician and planter, had come from Virginia to Georgia as a young man and had become a leader in the rising Jacksonian party. In 1838 the younger Shorter was admitted to the Alabama Bar and in 1843 he married Mary Jane Battle, the daughter of a wealthy Barbour County planter. The law firm of John Gill and Eli Shorter(John's brother) prospered. The family holdings grew extensively, and by 1845 John Gill was a member of the state Senate as a Democrat from Barbour County. In 1852 he was elected to the circuit judgeship of the Eufaula District, a post to which he was re-elected six years later. A disciple of William L. Yancey. John Gill Shorter was an ardent secessionist and a member of the so-called"Eufaula Regency, a small group of lawyer/planters in Barbour County who were instrumental in taking Alabama out of the Union in 1861. Nice little ceramic shell shaped dish with USS Alabama and a Seagull in Blue and White. The dish measures 4.25 X 4.25 inches and is in great condition with no chips. Cracks or damage. George ... moreSpencer was a Federal General who spent time in North Alabama during the Civil War and returned. With his wife Bella, as sort of an opportunistic carpetbagger after the war. His wife in fact wrote a novel about Alabama during the Civil War. General Spencer, who lived in DECATUR ALABAMA, got interested in politics and ran for one of Alabama's U.S. Senate seats after Alabama was readmitted to the union. Things were still very discombobulated(politically) in Alabama at the time and the state- for a while- had two legislatures! Remember that Senators were not directly elected in the 19th century- they were elected indirectly by state legislatures. One Alabama legislature elected General Spencer; the other one elected Francis Sykes. Here. The lawyers and the U S Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections try to sort it all out. but to no avail. Spencer retained his Senate seat. Valuable primary source Alabama political history of the RECONSTRUCTION era.
