UNIVERSAL ICE COMPANY Incorporated Under the Laws of the State of Delaware Capital Stock Certificate- 80 Shares This vintage stock certificate was issued on January 23. 1913. Registered No. 278, the shares were issued to J. E. Smith Jr. It is signed by W. E. Armistead[President] L. J. Adams[Treasurer] It is bears the embossed stamp of the corporate seal. Authorized captial of $5,000,000 divided into shares of the par value of $1.00 each. The actual certificate is printed in brown ink with black lettering and steel die engraving. The engraved vignette illustrates a classical female figure in a robe. With a landscape view behind her. The landscape shows a train crossing a bridge over a river with a farm house to the left. The figure is surrounded by a plow, wheat sheaf, barrell, and she holds a sextant. The printer is identified as Corlies, ... moreMacy& Co. Inc. New York. The certificate has been stored flat for many years but was at one time folded as can be seen in the photo. There is a 1 inch tear at the top of the two folds and a 1/4 inch tear in the center of the top margin far from the printed image. Otherwise. There are no marks or other creases. Condition is very good given the age of the piece. Size measures 9 1/8 x 12 1/8 inches(23.2 x 30.8 cm) William E. Armistead of Sanderson Georgia applied for a patent on an apparatus for manufacturing ice on August 23. 1911(Serial No. 645,517) The patent was approved by the United States Patent Office on May 20, 1913. Registration No. 1,062,530. The device used a brine vat with a can and a mechanism to prevent water from freezing in the intake pipes. Armistead subsequently filed for an additional patent on December 20, 1917 and was approved on September 13, 1921. Corlies. Macy& Co. was a leading printer and publisher located at 33 Nassau Street in New York City. They began printing checks and bank notes in the 1870s and continued to publish books and other historical documents through the 1920s.
