I think it shows well for its age. But isn’t perfect. Has“Remember the Maine” cast into both sides and is in the shape of the ship. Dish is 7” long and 1 ¾” tall. According to Wikipedia, the USS Maine was launched in 1889 as an armored cruiser. Was a second-class pre-dreadnought battleship whose sinking by an explosion(in Havana Harbor) Either internal or by a mine, on 15 February 1898 at 9:40 pm killing 266, precipitated the Spanish-American War. RARE Antique 1875 Pewter Tag Bangor Extension Ladder Co Maine Fire Invention
From the information I was able to garner from an online reprint of an article in a 1988 issue of Firemaniacs. The Bangor Ladder was invented by"Major James M. Davis, a joiner from Bangor, Maine" and Civil War veteran. Davis(in 1874 from a different source) designed the Bangor ladder in an effort to solve the major downfall of most lengthy ladders at the time- their tendency to fail under stress because the solid, wooden beams. would sag and break. Single ladders(non-extension) were out of favor because of their great weight. Long, heavy tormentor poles were used in the early days to help raise the long ladders. but carried separately. Davis is credited with being the first person to develop an extension ladder with permanently attached tormentor poles that would fit flush to the ladder while stored on the truck. When needed at ... morea fire the poles would easily swing out to assist in lifting the ladder as well as stabilize the ladder once in place. immediate hit with firefighters in the greater Bangor area. However it was General Joseph Smith, a Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor winner, that saw the value of Davis' ladder for a nation that was increasingly building upwards with taller and taller buildings. The General purchased Davis' interest in the ladder and set up the Bangor Extension Ladder Co. By 1890 hundreds of the Bangor Ladders were in service in most major cities. New York City purchased 200 while both Boston and Chicago had at least 50 ladders in service. Shortly after 1900 however the company went out of business after more than 25 years. From another source: General Smith's purchase was in 1875 in which year he took out a patent for the ladder. Also: Received the Centennial Medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition. I believe this is a rare tag of historic importance to the history of firefighting. This is a nickel plated pewter tag measuring about 2" x 4" Free insured shipping. Piscataquis Iron Works Company enlarged the mining operation in 1876 to the most significant iron works in the state. The 19-mile(31-km) Bangor and Katahdin Iron Works Railway was built in 1881 to connect the town with what would become the at. A fire destroyed much of the plant in 1883. But it was rebuilt in 1885 when the Katahdin Charcoal Iron Company was organized in Bangor with enough capital to re-build the works. However the 1880’s were also a time when charcoal furnaces were becoming obsolete. Being replaced by anthracite and coke furnaces, and large deposits of ore were being developed more successfully in other parts of the country. By 1890, the management of the Katahdin Charcoal Iron Company, faced with competition from the steel plants in Pennsylvania as well as rising costs and falling prices, was forced to give up the business. The graphics are bright and well centered on both sides of the bottle.On the bottom of the front side graphics as the pictures show it is from Brunswick, Maine. On the back side it states that it is"A Carbonated Beverage of the Highest Quality bottled with Pure Spring Water" The front side on the neck it has Pine Spring Beverages. I am not 100% sure of it's exact age, but there is a 67 embossed on the bottom of the Bottle which I believe it fits as most likely a 1967 Bottle.
