An 378-ton(burden) wooden screw gunboat, was built at Mystic, Connecticut, in 1858 as a commercial steamship. She was purchased by the Navy in May 1861 and commissioned a month later for Civil War service. After briefly operating in Chesapeake Bay, Albatross went south to enforce the blockade along the North Carolina coast where she engaged the gunboat Beaufort and seized two schooners in July. One of the latter, the Enchantress, had earlier been captured by the Confederate privateer Jefferson Davis. She took another schooner at the beginning of August, while ... moreen route north for repairs, and one more in Chesapeake Bay in mid-September. Albatross primarily worked off North Carolina for the next several months, destroying the ship York on 16 January 1862. In April she was sent to South Carolina waters, where she captured a tug and a schooner in June 1862. In August 1862, following repairs at Boston, Albatross went to the Gulf of Mexico. She operated along the Texas coast, capturing a schooner in September, and off Florida. Beginning in December 1862 she served on the Mississippi River, supporting landings at Baton Rouge in that month. Received and issued at Fort Davis, VA by Charles Rollings, Lieutenant, Cammanding Company"B" It lists item like cap letters, mittens, socks, kettles, axes, etc issued to the company that need to be accounted for. The 31st Regiment was mustered in on April 17. 1864 and saw almost immediate action. It participated in the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege Campaign and other battles in Virginia. Was in the Battle of the Crater during Petersburg. Mustered out on July 15, 1865. Complete. Eight pages counting covers. Ink is somewhat light but legible. Some discoloration along folds and a couple of pages have document tape at outside edge of folds. Back cover has a few ... morelight stains. No holes or missing pieces. Please see the pictures! LATE 19TH CENTURY ODD FELLOWS KEPI FROM A MAINE LODGE
I am offering an“Odd Fellows” fraternal organization Kepi that is complete and in excellent condition. The Kepi came out of Maine some years ago and has nice bullion embroidery on the front and the top. The kepi was made by the Pettibone Brothers Manufacturing Company of Cincinnati. Ohio. The buttons are correct and original to the cap and the lining of the kepi is nearly perfect. There are two small moth“nips” on the top but other than that the kepi is in great condition. The gold decorative band around the hat and the gold chin strap are a bit tarnished but they are original to the kepi and correct. 1898 postcard: "Remembered the Maine & All's Well" sent from USS Oregon
1898 Postcard: Sent from Seaman aboard USS Oregon after the Battle of Santiago July 3. 1898 where the Oregon and other American ships destroyed the Spanish Fleet. Postcard is postmarked Kittery Point, Maine. The USS Oregon[see#3] refitted at the Brooklyn Navy Yard before returning to the Pacific Fleet. The USS Oregon, commissioned in 1896, had been ordered to the east to fight against the Spanish in Cuba. It had sailed 14,000 nautical miles in 66 days which was quite an accomplishment but also demonstrated a real need for a Panama Canal if the US was to maintain a two ocean navy and venture into imperial conflicts. Its possible the Oregon took some Spanish prisoners to the Portsmouth Naval Yard as they arrived July 11th and the postcard is dated July 16th. The recipient of the card was Dr. Perry c/o Reliance Building[see#4] a famous Chicago ... moreskyscraper built in 1890. The author is Roden R who was seaman Roden Richardson Duff(1877- who later got a medical degree from the University of Illinois and both practiced and was an instructor in anatomy. Here are two Byer sleeping cots made in Maine. The cots when unfolded are 76 inches long 24 inches wide and set 8 inches off the ground. When folded up for carring they measure 38 inches long. This listing is for an 1855 US Coast Survey Chart of Portland. Maine. It measures 25"x21.5" It's shrink wrapped, so I couldn't get a very good picture of it. It has fold creases. We bought this at an estate auction. The 80 year old gentleman who had it, collected art and old documents, and sold them in his gallery. He retired, and this has been in storage, for 10 or 20 years. He had a $175 price tag on it.

The circumference of the basket is approx. 13" The lid has a hole in it to feed the yarn through.
